Most home garages were wired for lights, an outlet or two, and maybe a compressor — not a 220V or 230V hydraulic power unit pulling real amperage under load. Before you fall in love with a specific lift, we want you to know what circuit it needs, because that number varies by brand and model, and it’s the single biggest reason installs get delayed.

One restoration customer we worked with had already scheduled us to arrive, and the first question our technician asked on-site was the same one we ask every caller now: is there a box he can hardwire to, or is he running an extension cord? That’s not a small detail. A lift’s power unit is not something you want daisy-chained off a cord meant for a shop vac. If you’re serious about an autolift garage for metal work — welding, frame straightening, cutting — you’re likely already running a sub-panel or planning to. That’s the right time to add the lift circuit to the same conversation with your electrician.

Single-Phase vs Three-Phase: What Southwest Iowa Garages Actually Have

Three-phase power belongs to commercial buildings and some rural ag operations, not typical residential garages, so unless you’ve had it specifically installed, don’t assume you have it.

This matters because some heavier-duty or commercial-grade lifts are available in three-phase configurations that simply won’t work off your home panel without a phase converter — an extra cost most home buyers don’t need to take on. Restoration and metal fabrication garages tend to run more simultaneous loads than a typical home garage — welder, plasma cutter, compressor, lights, and the lift itself, sometimes all in the same session. That changes how we think about circuit sizing for your autolift garage. A dedicated 220-230V circuit just for the lift, sized to the manufacturer’s spec and not shared with your welder outlet, is the standard we recommend every time.

We’ve seen installs get pushed back because a customer assumed the outlet already in the garage would work, only to find out on install day it was on the same breaker as the overhead door opener and two shop lights. Have your electrician pull a dedicated circuit sized specifically for the lift’s power unit, run in conduit if it’s an unfinished garage, terminated at a box within reach of where the lift’s power unit will sit. Concrete Readiness Matters Just as Much as Power

Alongside electrical, the other question we ask every autolift garage buyer is about the slab. Two-post lifts anchor into concrete, and the anchor points need adequate depth and cure time — a slab poured last month is not ready for a heavy-duty two-post lift, full stop. We’ve done inspections where the columns ended up closer to a floor crack than we’d like to see; it’s common and usually not something to panic over unless spider-web cracking starts radiating out from the anchor bolts, but it’s much better to check slab thickness and condition before you commit to a spot.

For restoration work specifically, you also want to think about where the lift sits relative to your welding and cutting area, your dust collection if you’re doing bodywork, and clearance for arms when the vehicle is up. A four-post drive-on setup takes a different footprint than a two-post asymmetric lift, and both have different slab and clearance needs. Walk your garage with a tape measure and your panel location before you order anything.

Picking the Right Lift for Metal Work, Not Just Daily Driving

Not every autolift garage lift is built the same way, and restoration work puts different demands on equipment than an oil change. If you’re pulling frames, swapping suspensions, or doing extended metal fabrication underneath a vehicle, you want a two-post lift with generous arm reach and a weight rating with real headroom above your heaviest project — not the bare minimum for a daily driver. Scheduling and Freight: What to Expect for a Home Garage Install

Once the electrical and concrete are squared away, the logistics side of an autolift garage install is straightforward but worth planning for. We’ll ask if there’s a forklift on-site or if our crew needs to unload by hand, whether there’s a pit or step-down in the garage floor, and how much clearance we have to maneuver crates through a garage door. Lead times vary by lift model and season, so the earlier you lock in your circuit and slab work, the tighter we can get your install date.

We’ve had installs pushed a week or more simply because the electrician’s schedule didn’t line up with the freight delivery, so it’s worth having both conversations at the same time rather than sequentially. Keep documentation of what circuit your lift is on and its amperage draw; it saves a step every time you or an electrician needs to troubleshoot later.

Beyond power, the ongoing part of owning an autolift garage is keeping common wear items on hand or at least know-able — equalizer cables, hydraulic hoses, hydraulic cylinders, and rubber foot pad inserts are the parts that wear first on any two-post lift under regular restoration use.
