Every time a mobile mechanic decides to plant a flag and open a fixed autolift garage, the timing of the build gets more expensive than the parts. We worked with a CV axle and half-shaft specialist on the Iowa-Nebraska border last summer who wanted to convert a leased 30×30 pole building into a working two-bay shop. He had budget, he had a customer list, and he had exactly zero patience for a job that took three months of nights and weekends. The sequence we used with him is the one we recommend to every mobile tech who calls us about going stationary, and it saved him roughly two weeks of downtime compared to how he would have done it alone.

Step One: Slab and Utilities Before Walls Are Painted

The first mistake a lot of mobile mechanics make when standing up a new autolift garage is finishing the cosmetics before the concrete work. Insulation, drywall, epoxy floor coatings, and mezzanine builds all look like progress, but every one of them fights you later when you need to core-drill anchor holes, punch a 240-volt drop through a wall, or route a compressed-air line under the slab. Our first sequencing rule is simple: if you touch it during the lift install, do not finish it before the lift install.

For this border-region shop, we started with the slab evaluation on the same day we walked the building. The existing concrete was 4 inches, poured in 2003, and had two control joints running the length of the shop. We marked the target lift footprints in chalk, verified anchor clearance from every joint and wall, and drew up a rough electrical plan for the 240-volt drops before the customer signed his lift order. Doing the slab evaluation first eliminates the risk that you order a lift that will not fit the concrete you already have.

Step Two: Order Long-Lead Items on Day One

Lifts themselves are usually two to four weeks out from most manufacturers, and installation crews book two to four weeks ahead in peak season. If you wait until your building is fully finished to start ordering, you have added a month of empty-shop downtime to your project. We tell every mobile mechanic planning an autolift garage to place the lift order the same week they sign the lease or close on the building.

For this CV axle shop, the specific lift was a 10,000 lb symmetric overhead two-post, and we had one on the floor in Ames that shipped the following day. That is not always the case, so factor in freight timing when you sequence. Other long-lead items to order on day one include the air compressor, the electrical service upgrade if your building is not already at 200 amps, and any specialized ventilation you need for exhaust extraction or brake dust. Getting those on the truck early means all of the trades can converge on the same install week rather than waiting on each other.

Step Three: Electrical and Compressed Air Rough-In Before Install

An autolift garage needs 240-volt single-phase power at each lift location, or 208-volt three-phase in some commercial buildings. For a two-lift shop, run a dedicated 30-amp circuit to each lift. We recommend a NEMA L6-30 twist-lock outlet, which is what most lift power units expect, and mounting the outlet 60 inches off the floor between the two columns. That way the plug does not drag on the floor and the outlet is out of the way of the vehicle.

Compressed air is the second utility to rough in. Most CV axle work needs impact guns rated for 3/4-inch drive, which pull serious CFM. A 60-gallon single-stage compressor is the minimum for one bay; if you are running two bays or bigger impacts, a 80-gallon two-stage is more comfortable. Run 3/4-inch iron pipe or aluminum air line to each bay with a hose reel drop at each lift. Doing this before the lift install lets the install crew tie into your air lines during their first visit rather than making a return trip.

Step Four: The Install Week and What to Have Ready

When the install crew arrives, they should find a clean slab with lift footprints chalked out, a 240-volt outlet at each lift location, an air line dropped nearby, and clear access from the door to the install spot. That is the minimum. Nice-to-haves include overhead lighting already installed and switched, a clear zone at least six feet wide around each lift for the install jockey to move parts, and coffee. We work better with coffee.

Install itself for a two-lift autolift garage is typically two working days for our two-man crew. Day one is drilling anchors, setting columns, and running hydraulic lines. Day two is calibration, safety-lock testing, cable tensioning, and a full load-test cycle with a real vehicle. If the shop has other trades wrapping up at the same time, we ask them to stay off the floor during our anchor drilling and load testing. A wet vac and a shop broom are all we need for cleanup at the end of each day.

Step Five: First-Week Shakedown Jobs

We tell every new autolift garage owner not to book a full schedule for their first week. Pick two or three friendly customers, ideally repeat clients you already know, and run their jobs slowly. This is not because the lift is unreliable; it is because you are learning the geometry of your own bay. Where does your creeper live now that there is a column instead of open floor? How far does your impact hose reach? Is the light glaring off the freshly painted wall right into your eyes when you look at a rotor?

For the border shop, the first-week jobs were three CV axle replacements on midsize SUVs and one half-shaft on a compact pickup. Total labor time on each of those dropped by roughly a third compared to his old jack-and-stand mobile process, which was the entire point of going stationary. He recouped the payment on his first-year lift financing in about four months of steady work. Your numbers will vary, but the pattern is consistent: an autolift garage pays for itself faster than most mechanics expect once the shakedown week is behind them.

Step Six: Deferred Cosmetic Work

Now, and only now, is the time to finish the paint, install the mezzanine, epoxy-coat the floor around the lifts, or hang the pegboard behind the workbench. All of the work that would have gotten in the install crew’s way is safe to do once the lift is bolted down and load-tested. If you epoxy the entire floor including under the lift, apply the coating up to a couple of inches from the column base and leave a small unpainted collar around each anchor. That way if you ever need to service a column bolt, you are not fighting the epoxy.

Deferred does not mean forgotten. Set a target date for the cosmetic wrap-up while you are still fresh on the install, otherwise it drags for months. For most autolift garage projects we work on, cosmetics get finished within four to six weeks of the lift install, in evening and weekend blocks around the work you are now getting paid to do. Progress is easier to sustain when the shop is already earning money.

What This Sequence Costs and Saves

Sequenced correctly, a mobile mechanic can go from signed lease to first paying autolift garage customer in about five to seven weeks. Done in the wrong order, the same project stretches to twelve or more weeks and burns two mortgage payments of missed revenue. The delta is the sequencing, not the parts. Nothing here requires premium equipment or extra square footage. It just requires deciding what to touch first.
