An Ankeny shop that specializes in Porsche and BMW restoration reached out last summer about phasing in a new autolift garage across two building bays. They already had one lift, they knew they wanted three total, and they were getting bombarded with advice from parts reps, contractors, and forum threads about the order to do everything in. Half the advice was wrong, some of it was expensive, and none of it was calibrated to a shop that does metal work, paint prep, and glass out on high-end cars. We spent an afternoon walking through the myths, and this article is the debunking. Myth: You Need All Your Lifts Installed at Once
The most common bad advice we hear is that a multi-lift shop should install every lift at once to save on install labor. It sounds reasonable and it is almost always wrong. Installing three lifts simultaneously means committing your entire slab to three column pairs at once, freezing your bay layout, and paying for equipment that is not yet earning. If any of your assumptions change over the first year, you are stuck.
What we recommend instead is a phased install. Put in the first lift, use it for six months, and learn where the actual bottleneck in your workflow is. Maybe you thought you needed a scissor for glass work and it turns out you really need a second two-post. Maybe your paint prep bay does not need a lift at all and you want to redirect that money into a downdraft booth. Sequencing a Restoration-Focused Autolift Garage Build
Here is the sequence we walked the Ankeny shop through. First, install a heavy-service two-post lift in the primary teardown bay. This is the lift that will see the most brake, suspension, and drivetrain work, and it needs to be a mainstream ALI Gold Label unit with easy parts. Second, wait three to six months and evaluate. Third, install a four-post drive-on lift in the storage bay if you need long-term storage of project cars, or install a mid-rise scissor if you need body-panel and rocker access on the ground plane.
Fourth, only after both of those are running, add a third lift for a specialty function like alignment or heavy engine drops. This sequence works because each lift’s value proposition becomes clearer as the shop operates. Restoration work is fundamentally different from a production shop; the same car sits in the same bay for weeks, and the lift needs to accommodate a slow, thorough workflow. Rushing all three installs to save a day of freight coordination gets you locked into a layout you will resent. Every restoration autolift garage benefits from patience.
Myth: European Cars Need European Lifts
We hear this constantly. Someone will tell an Ankeny Porsche shop that they need a specific European brand of lift because it has a lower minimum pad height or a particular arm geometry. There are legitimate reasons a specialty lift might fit a specific car better, but the blanket claim that European marques require European lifts is nonsense. Rotary and Challenger both make asymmetric two-post lifts with pad heights and arm reach that handle Porsches, BMWs, Audis, and Mercedes without complaint.
What actually matters for European cars is arm reach and pad height. Air-cooled Porsches have narrow lift points that need pad adapters. Later BMWs have plastic underbody trays that need specific pad shapes to avoid crushing. Both are solvable with adapter kits that we sell alongside any mainstream lift. Pick a Rotary SPOA10 or a Challenger CL10 asymmetric, add the right pad adapters, and you have a shop-grade autolift garage that handles every European car you will realistically service. Save the money you were going to spend on a boutique European brand and put it into a second lift.
Metal Work and Welding Bay Considerations
Restoration shops do metal work, and metal work involves grinding, welding, and cutting. That puts real demands on your lift environment. Grinding dust settles into hydraulic cylinder rod seals and eats them over time. Welding sparks can damage safety cables and hydraulic hoses. If your primary teardown lift lives in the same bay as your metal work, you are shortening the lift’s service life.
We recommend a physical separation of the metal work area from any lift. Even a partition wall with a curtain is better than a shared bay. If you cannot physically separate the two, at minimum invest in a heavy-duty tarp cover for the lift during welding operations and clean the cylinder rods weekly. The Ankeny shop we worked with ended up dedicating one bay entirely to metal work with no lift, and their two lift bays are curtained off from that space. Myth: Baseplate Lifts Are Only for Low Ceilings
Baseplate two-post lifts get pigeonholed as the low-ceiling solution, and that framing misses their real utility. Yes, baseplate lifts work in ceilings as low as 11 feet because there is no overhead crossbar. But they also work in tall ceilings, and for a restoration shop with high ceilings and a preference for clean sightlines, a baseplate lift keeps the entire overhead volume open for lighting, hoists, and paint booth exhaust.
The trade-off is a floor crossbar you step over, roughly six inches tall. For a production shop where techs move fast, that step is a nuisance. For a restoration shop where techs spend a whole day on one car, the step is invisible. If your ceilings are 14 feet or higher and you value overhead cleanliness, do not dismiss baseplate. We have installed baseplate lifts into 20-foot-ceiling restoration bays and the owners love the openness. The overhead-versus-baseplate decision for a restoration autolift garage should be about workflow, not ceiling minimums.
Air, Electrical, and Fluid Reels Sequence
Once your lifts are in, the utility rough-in sequence matters. Restoration shops need air lines, 110V and 220V power, welding gas plumbing, brake fluid and coolant drums, and often a compressed nitrogen line for tire work. The mistake we see is running all utilities at once before the lifts are placed. That locks in reel and outlet locations before you know exactly where your work triangle is.
Our recommended sequence is: install the primary lift, work in the bay for two weeks, mark on the floor with tape where you actually walk and reach, and then rough in utilities to match that pattern. Then repeat when the second lift goes in. This adds a week or two to the build-out, and it saves you from paying an electrician to move outlets six months later. The temptation to run all utilities up front is strong, and resisting it is the difference between a shop that flows and a shop with awkward hose routing forever.
