Setting up an autolift garage for a municipal fleet in eastern Nebraska is a very different problem than building a two-bay independent shop. You are storing plow trucks, patrol cars, brush chippers, and mowers on a seasonal cycle, moving them in and out at predictable times of year, and you are answerable to a public safety officer who wants every bay to pass an inspection. The workflow a municipal autolift garage actually has to support
A municipal fleet in eastern Nebraska cycles hard on two dates: the week the plows come out, and the week the mowers do. That is when a lift bay lives or dies. If a superintendent has to rearrange three vehicles to get one down, the whole day is gone. We design an autolift garage around that peak, not the average, because the peak is when a fleet manager calls a supervisor to complain. A four-post with wheel-standing capability up top and a walking work zone below is the layout we use nine times out of ten.
The workflow driver is single-person operation. In a lot of these buildings, one operator has to bring a plow truck in, set it on the lift, park a mower under it, and move on. That means drive-on ramps facing the door, clear column paths, no cross-traffic with the parts room. When we walk a building with a public works director in Nebraska, we are drawing the line the trucks take through the bay first, before anyone talks about the lift model.
Column spacing, clearance, and the OSHA-friendly bay
Safety-first means the bay has enough room for a technician to walk every side of a lifted vehicle without turning sideways. On a four-post at full lift, that is a minimum of three feet of clear walkway on each side plus the width of the vehicle plus the width of the runways. For a plow truck with a wing that pushes 96 inches wide, that means a 15-foot minimum bay width. Anything less and someone is squeezing past a wing every time they walk the perimeter.
Overhead is the other one people miss. Municipal bays often have 14-foot ceilings and open trusses. That sounds like a lot until you lift a 12-foot truck to 5 feet and have to add cab-mounted lights to the math. In our autolift garage layouts we pick lift height so the highest point of the raised vehicle clears the truss by at least 12 inches, which usually pushes us to a mid-range four-post lifting to 68 inches instead of a full 78. You lose almost nothing on workflow and gain a huge safety margin.
Why a four-post beats a two-post for storage duty
Two-posts are technician lifts. They are made for cycling up and down twenty times a day, arms swinging under different vehicles. A municipal storage bay is not that. It is a long dwell — a mower or a squad car sits for four months. That is a four-post job, all day. The load is on the runways, not on hydraulic arms, and the lift’s mechanical locks carry the weight, not the cylinder.
The second reason is drive-on speed. A single operator can put a plow truck on a four-post in ninety seconds. That same truck on a two-post takes four minutes minimum, and if a wing is off-center the arms won’t reach. In an autolift garage built for seasonal cycling, four-post always wins the workflow argument, and we usually specify one with an air-actuated lock so the operator does not have to walk to each column to seat the mechanical safety.
Concrete, anchors, and the slab conversation
The floor under a fleet autolift garage sees more punishment than most people realize. Plow trucks carrying road salt, water, and chloride wick that mess into the concrete. Anchors are the failure point. On a four-post the loading is much gentler than a two-post, but salt corrosion around the anchor is still the enemy. We spec a wedge anchor with hot-dip coating on any coastal or road-salt exposure, and we tell fleet managers to hose the floor around the anchors twice a season.
Slab thickness on a four-post is 4 inches at 3,000 PSI minimum for most models we install, and municipal buildings often have thicker floors, which is good. What we watch for is expansion joints running under an anchor location. If we can move the lift six inches to keep every anchor in a solid pour, we do, and we explain why on the site walk so nobody is surprised when the layout shifts.
Bay lighting, hoist points, and the boring stuff that matters
An autolift garage nobody talks about is the one where a technician can see under a truck at 5 PM in January without a headlamp. We push LED shop lighting on 4-foot centers over each bay, and a wall-mounted work light on a swing arm at every lift. It costs almost nothing on the front end and pays back in productivity every winter. In a municipal setting the safety officer will thank you specifically for this on the first walkthrough.
Hoist points and floor drains are the other quiet win. Every bay needs a floor drain sloped toward it because plow trucks come in with 200 pounds of slush stuck to the underside. If the drain is on the wrong side of the lift you get a puddle under the columns that will freeze in the shoulder seasons. We walk the drain plan with the building engineer before the lift ships.
Documentation, inspection records, and how public agencies audit
A public autolift garage is subject to annual inspection under ALI ALCTV standards. The safety officer will ask for the install certification, the operator training log, and the annual third-party inspection record. We ship every commercial lift with the ALI-compliant sticker and the manual, we do the operator training on the day of install for free, and we can put you on our annual inspection route if you want that off your plate. Most municipal customers do.
Keep a binder in the shop with the inspection tag, the training log, and a copy of the operator manual. When a state inspector shows up unannounced, you hand them the binder and go back to work. That is what “safety-first” actually looks like on a Tuesday morning, and it costs almost nothing to set up correctly on day one.
What to spec before you call an installer
Before you call us for a fleet autolift garage layout, count three things and take photos of one. Count the vehicles you want to store, the tallest vehicle’s overall height, and the widest vehicle’s wing-to-wing measurement. Photograph the concrete floor, the ceiling trusses, and the overhead door opening. Those five data points tell us 90 percent of what we need to specify a lift and quote the install.
