A municipal fleet manager in east-central Iowa planning an autolift garage for seasonal vehicle storage, snow plows in summer, mowers and utility vehicles in winter, faces a very different set of tradeoffs than a working service bay. The lift is not there to do daily work. It is there to get a rarely-driven vehicle up off the floor so another one can park underneath, and to do that safely with fleet techs who may or may not touch the lift more than once a season. Ceiling height and door swing are the two dimensions we spend the most time on with fleet managers, and this piece walks through a safety-first checklist for both.

Why Storage Lifts Are Different
The most important safety concept for a seasonal-storage autolift garage is that the vehicle spends months on the lift, not hours. That single fact changes everything about lift selection. A two-post lift can technically hold a vehicle at height indefinitely, but it is not designed for it. The columns want to sit unloaded most of the time. A four-post lift is designed for continuous parked load, and it is what every municipal fleet we work with in east-central Iowa uses for seasonal storage.
Once you commit to a four-post storage lift, the design conversation becomes about clearances. How high does the fleet vehicle need to go so a second vehicle can park underneath? How tall is the tallest vehicle likely to sit on top? How tall is the tallest vehicle likely to park underneath? Answering those three questions gives you the required ceiling clearance, and everything else follows from there. Fleet managers who skip this and buy the standard-height lift often find out too late that their crew cab pickup on top will not clear the truss webs of the storage building. We would rather do the math first and buy the right lift than shim in a solution later. A safety-first autolift garage layout starts with these dimensions written down before a single quote gets pulled.
Ceiling Height Math for Two-Vehicle Storage
Here is the math we walk through with every east-central Iowa fleet manager. Start with the height of the vehicle on top: for a standard plow truck with the plow removed, call it 78 inches to the top of the cab. Add the runway height of the four-post lift at maximum extension: typical 4-post storage lifts extend 72 to 84 inches. Add a safety clearance to the ceiling: minimum 6 inches, ideally 12. So you need 78 plus 84 plus 12, or roughly 174 inches, which is 14.5 feet.
Underneath, you need clearance for the vehicle parked below. If your fleet parks a utility van under the plow truck, call the van 82 inches tall plus 6 inches of runway clearance, so about 88 inches. That has to fit under the raised platform, which sits at 84 inches when the top vehicle is lifted. In that specific example, you would only have 6 inches to spare, which is workable but tight. If either vehicle is a hair taller than expected, you have a problem. Municipal autolift garage buildings should be built or specced to 15 or 16 feet of ceiling clearance to give real safety margin. Ten and a half feet, which is the residential-garage default, will not work for any two-vehicle storage stack involving full-size fleet vehicles. Owners who inherit a building at that height often need to switch to a shorter lift or accept single-vehicle storage.
Door Swing on the Building Envelope
The other dimension fleet managers miss is door swing and header height at the vehicle entry. If your fleet building has a 12-foot overhead door, you can only drive a vehicle in that is under 12 feet tall including any roof-mount equipment. Add in the sag of an aged door and you are at 11.5 or 11.75. Some plow trucks with beacon bars or ladder racks are 10.5 feet on their own. If the vehicle barely clears the door coming in, you are fine driving in but you may not have working clearance to walk around it at ground level once it is parked.
More importantly, when you raise the vehicle on the storage lift, the door needs to be closed or the vehicle needs to clear the door track. Overhead door tracks typically curve inward at the top of the frame, and a vehicle raised on a storage lift can hit that track if the door is left open during raise. This is a real safety concern we have seen at fleet facilities where a driver forgot to close the door before raising. The autolift garage layout for seasonal storage should always include a written procedure: close the door before raising, verify the top of the vehicle clears the ceiling and any overhead obstructions, then engage the mechanical safeties. Fleet managers who write that procedure and post it near the lift never have this problem. Fleet managers who assume everyone knows eventually do.
Bay Layout and Column Placement
A four-post storage lift needs a specific footprint on the floor and specific clearance around it. Standard four-post storage lifts are roughly 8 feet wide by 20 feet long overall, with the runways sitting on 8-foot columns. You need at least 3 feet of clearance on each side for tech access and door swing, and at least 4 feet at the front for approach and 3 feet at the rear.
That means a single autolift garage bay for storage needs roughly 14 feet wide by 26 feet long of clear floor space. Two side-by-side storage lifts want 24 feet of width because the columns of adjacent lifts should not share space. In a typical 40×60 municipal maintenance building, you can fit two storage lifts and still have room for a service bay and general parts storage. Fleet managers who try to squeeze three storage lifts into a 40-foot width almost always end up with one lift they cannot use because of clearance issues. The math is unforgiving. We would rather help you plan two lifts that work than three lifts that fight each other. Load Balance for Seasonal Vehicles
A snow plow with the plow attached is nose-heavy. A mower with the deck extended is different. A utility van full of tools is rear-heavy. Every fleet vehicle has a load distribution that needs to be accommodated by the runway placement on the storage lift. Standard four-post storage lifts have adjustable centerline runway positions to move the runways inboard or outboard depending on the vehicle wheelbase. That adjustment is done during installation, not on the fly.

We set up the runway positions to match the wheelbase range you are actually storing, so no vehicle ends up with a wheel hanging off the end or sitting on an unsupported section. That option costs a bit more up front but eliminates any awkward on-the-fly adjustments during a seasonal swap. Annual Inspection Requirements
ALI (Automotive Lift Institute) recommends annual inspection on every commercial lift, including storage lifts in municipal fleet service. Some municipal fleets treat that as optional because the lift only carries a stored vehicle. It is not optional. A lift under continuous parked load actually needs the inspection more than a lift that goes up and down daily, because slow creep in cables or hydraulic seals can develop undetected across a full storage season.
We handle annual ALI inspections for east-central Iowa municipal fleets on a scheduled basis, typically bundled with any other lift work the fleet needs done in the year. The inspection covers cable tension, hydraulic pressure, mechanical lock engagement, structural integrity of columns and beams, and anchor bolt torque. Most inspections take about an hour per lift and produce a written report the fleet manager files with their equipment records. If a fleet manager is being audited by their risk-management department or insurance carrier, that annual inspection report is exactly what the audit needs. Plan the building envelope around 15 to 16 feet of ceiling clearance if you are building new. If you are working with an existing building at 12 to 14 feet, be realistic about what stack of vehicles will fit and buy a shorter-lift model if you have to. Do the door-swing math before you sign the PO. Get the annual inspection scheduled from day one. Post the raise-and-engage procedure at the lift. Do all of that and your storage lift will run for 20 years with almost no drama. Skip any of it and you will spend more on retrofit and repair than the lift cost in the first place.
