Why CV Axle Work Is a Lift Decision, Not a Jack Decision
CV axle and half-shaft replacement on a light truck can technically be done on jack stands, but it should not be done that way at fleet volumes. You need the wheels off, both hubs suspended, and enough working room to swing an axle out of the differential and hub without fighting a control arm. On an autolift garage with a proper two-post, the axle drops in under an hour per side including boots and grease. On jack stands, it is a two-and-a-half-hour job with a sore back at the end. Multiply that across a fleet of half-tons and it becomes obvious why the lift pays for itself in a season.
What Cedar Rapids winters do to CV boots is not a mystery. Salt cracks the boots, grease flushes out, joints wear, vibrations start, and the joint needs replacement. Doing that job in-house on a proper autolift garage is a different exercise than sending the truck out. We size the lift for the fleet you have plus one class up, so a three-quarter-ton future addition does not force a second lift purchase in year three.
Configuration A: The Rotary SPOA10 With Standard Freight Path
Configuration A is the Rotary SPOA10 asymmetric two-post at 10,000 lb, delivered to Cedar Rapids on a standard LTL truck. The two crated columns and the powerpack ship as a single shipment, total gross weight roughly 1,900 pounds. Standard freight time from the Rotary warehouse to the eastern Iowa area is under a week once the order releases. If your leased bay has a loading dock, this configuration lands cleanly: the truck backs up, we roll the crates off with a pallet jack, and unloading is done in an hour.
If your bay does not have a dock, that is where the conversation gets specific. A liftgate truck can drop the crates at ground level in the parking lot, but the columns are heavy enough that you still need a forklift or a pallet jack on a smooth surface to get them into the bay. For most autolift garage installs in the Cedar Rapids area, we coordinate a forklift rental for the unload day if the shop does not already have one. It is a small line item, and it prevents a two-tech crew from wrestling a 400-pound column off a truck.
Configuration B: The Rotary SPO12 With a Split Shipment
Configuration B steps up to the Rotary SPO12 symmetric two-post at 12,000 lb capacity — the right answer for a fleet that includes three-quarter-tons with utility bodies, a plow truck, or a service body pickup. The 12,000 lb rating gives you comfortable margin on any half-ton, no marginal calculations on the plow truck, and headroom for a future one-ton if the fleet grows. The columns are taller and heavier, the powerpack is beefier, and freight is a slightly larger shipment.
Sometimes we ship the SPO12 as a split shipment — columns on one truck, powerpack and hardware on another — because of size limits at the source warehouse. Both arrive within a day or two of each other. Your autolift garage install crew arrives when both shipments are on site. This is not a problem, just a scheduling detail. We coordinate the deliveries so both hit the same window, and we call the shop the day before each truck arrives so someone is ready to unload.
Forklift Access and the One Question Nobody Asks First
The question every fleet operator forgets to ask is: does the door of the leased bay actually fit a crated column standing up. Standard bay doors are usually fine, but some older Cedar Rapids warehouse conversions have low headers or narrow overhead doors. A crated Rotary column stands roughly nine feet tall. If your overhead door is under nine feet, the column comes in horizontal on the pallet, which is fine but changes the unload plan. We ask about door height on every site visit, and we would rather know that before the truck rolls than after.
Forklift access matters similarly. If you have a warehouse-mate with a forklift, borrow it. If you do not, we can arrange a rental for the day, or use a pallet jack on smooth concrete. What we do not do is show up and improvise. The plan is set the week before install, and the plan matches the actual bay. Install Day Sequence for Either Configuration
Install day for either configuration is a single shift with a two-tech crew. Morning is layout and anchor drilling. Concrete dust is real, so we cover any tool cabinets or bench work the night before. Anchor bolts drop in, we bolt down the base plates, and stand the columns. Afternoon is plumbing the hydraulic lines between the powerpack and the cylinders, running the equalizer cables between the columns, mounting the arms, and filling the powerpack with hydraulic fluid. Late afternoon is bleed, cycle test, and safety walkthrough.
The safety walkthrough is where the operator learns the specific lift — how the arm restraints engage, how the safety-cam pawls drop, how to bleed if a cylinder gets air later, and what to inspect at the six-month and twelve-month marks. We leave a laminated card on the column with the essentials. When the first CV axle job hits the autolift garage a few days later, the operator is comfortable with the lift already.
What CV Axle Work Actually Looks Like on Each Lift
On the SPOA10, a Cedar Rapids operator can pull both front axles on a half-ton in a morning. Raise the truck to chest height, break the axle nut, swing the tie rod out of the way, pop the hub out of the knuckle, and slide the axle out of the differential. Reverse to install. The asymmetric arm geometry gives you clean access to the knuckle without an arm blocking the impact gun. This is what an autolift garage was designed for, and this is why the SPOA10 is the most-installed lift in our lineup.
On the SPO12, the same job runs identically but with more headroom under the truck. If your fleet three-quarter-tons have utility bodies that force the whole truck higher, the extra column reach means you can still raise the frame to a comfortable working height without hitting the ceiling. The symmetric arm layout means the truck centers between the columns, which for utility bodies is often the cleaner arm pad approach. Both configurations do the job well. The right choice is a function of the fleet, not the lift.
What We Recommend for a Cedar Rapids Fleet Bay
If your fleet is entirely half-tons and light cargo vans, Configuration A (the SPOA10) is the correct answer. If you have any three-quarter-tons, plow trucks, or service bodies, Configuration B (the SPO12) is the step-up worth taking. The freight cost difference is modest, the install cost is nearly identical, and the capability delta on a fleet with any medium-duty vehicles is significant. Do not undersize the autolift garage for the fleet you actually run.
