The most satisfying autolift garage project we did last year belonged to a collector west of Waukee with a 30×40 pole building, twelve-foot sidewalls, and six vehicles he cared about more than he’d admit out loud. He wanted to store cars vertically to buy floor space, but he also wanted to do real work — corner weights, ride height, and eventually a full alignment setup — without paying a shop to touch cars he’d spent years sorting out. This is the story of that first year, from the phone call about slab thickness through install day, the first time he set toe on the lift, and the annual inspection twelve months later. The First Call: Storage, Service, or Both
He opened with a question we hear constantly: can one lift store a car and let me work under another one? The honest answer is that a four-post does both reasonably well and neither perfectly. Storage is its native strength — drive on, raise, park a daily driver underneath, done. Service work is possible with rolling jack trays that lift the wheels off the runways, and that setup covers brakes, rotors, and wheel-off work fine. What it doesn’t do as gracefully as a two-post is deep suspension work where you want the vehicle hanging free with nothing under the sills.
Where a four-post genuinely wins for a collector is alignment. The runways give you a flat, level, repeatable reference plane, and with slip plates up front and turn plates you can set caster, camber, and toe with the car at ride height and the suspension loaded — which is the only way those numbers mean anything. He had two cars with adjustable coilovers and a third with shims he’d never trusted. That settled it. We spec’d a 12,000 lb four-post with an alignment-ready runway package and rolling jacks, and planned the building layout around leaving enough side clearance for heads and cables. That decision defined everything about how the autolift garage came together.
Why ALI Gold Certification Mattered to Him
He asked about certification before he asked about price, which is rarer than it should be. ALI Gold certification means an independent third party — not the manufacturer’s own marketing department — has tested the lift against the ANSI/ALI ALCTV safety standard and audits the factory on an ongoing basis. It covers structural load testing, overload behavior, the locking system, controls, and the documentation and labeling that ship with the unit. A gold label on the column isn’t decoration; it’s a testable claim.
For somebody parking irreplaceable vehicles eight feet in the air over a car he drives every day, that mattered. Uncertified imports can look identical in photographs and undercut certified equipment substantially, but you have no independent verification of the locking mechanism, no audited factory, and frequently no parts pipeline three years down the road. We’ve been called to buildings where the owner needed one cable and one lock dog for an uncertified lift and no such part existed anywhere in North America. That machine became scrap. In an autolift garage holding a collection, the certification premium is cheap insurance. It also carries through to resale and to insurance conversations — some carriers ask, and having a documented certified installation makes that a short discussion.
Slab, Sidewalls, and the Pre-Install Survey
His building was a 30×40 post-frame with a poured slab and twelve-foot sidewalls — very close to the most common setup we see for a hobby build in central Iowa. Twelve feet of clear height is enough to stack two mid-size cars with a four-post if you plan carefully, but it’s not enough to be careless. We measured to the bottom of the purlins, not to the peak, and subtracted the height of the tallest vehicle he’d ever store below plus the runway thickness plus the raised carriage. The numbers worked with about nine inches to spare, and that margin is exactly the kind of thing that gets missed when people order online off a spec sheet.
Concrete on a four-post is less critical than on a two-post since the load is distributed across four base plates rather than concentrated into anchor bolts under tension, but it still matters. We checked slab condition, looked for cracking around the intended footprint, and confirmed the floor was level enough that shimming would be minor. We also mapped where the runways would sit relative to the overhead door track and the electrical panel. Twenty minutes of walking the building with a tape measure prevents the install-day conversation nobody wants. Install Day and the First Vehicle Up
A four-post install in a prepared building is generally a one-day job for our crew. Columns get positioned and plumbed, cross members and runways go in, the cables get routed and tensioned, the power unit gets mounted and wired, and then the whole thing gets cycled empty several times while we equalize the runways and verify every lock engages at every position simultaneously. Cable tension on a four-post is the single most important adjustment on the machine, and it’s the one most commonly done wrong by DIY installers. If the four cables aren’t equalized, the runways go up out of level and the locks don’t seat together.
Then we load-test it. His first vehicle up was the car he was least worried about, which is always the right choice. We ran it to full height, dropped it onto the locks, and let it sit while we walked him through the daily routine: check that both runways are locked, listen for the lock engagement, never leave a vehicle on hydraulic pressure alone. We showed him how to set the rolling jacks, where the safe lift points were on each car in the collection, and what the lowering sequence sounds like when it’s right. An hour of walkthrough on install day prevents most of the service calls we’d otherwise get in month four of a new autolift garage.
Month Three: The First Real Alignment
The first serious job he tackled was setting up a car with adjustable coilovers that had never had a proper alignment at its current ride height. On a four-post with slip plates and turn plates, this is genuinely pleasant work. The car sits loaded at ride height on a level plane, you unlock the plates, roll the suspension to settle it, and start reading numbers. He was using a string-and-gauge setup rather than optical heads, which is entirely workable on a stable platform — and it’s the platform that makes it workable. On jack stands or a sloped concrete floor, string alignment is guesswork.
He learned two things that first weekend. One: the runways have to be level to each other before any measurement means anything, so a spirit level check across both runways front and rear became step zero every time. Two: shimming the lift once at install is not permanent — settling and seasonal slab movement in an Iowa building are real, and he now rechecks level each spring. Those two habits turned the equipment from a parking rack into a working tool. By the end of the year he’d aligned four of the six cars and corrected a camber problem on a fifth that had been eating tires for two seasons. Month Twelve: The First Annual Inspection
Twelve months in, we came back out for the first annual. ALI recommends annual inspection by a qualified inspector on every lift regardless of duty cycle, and on a home unit that sees light use people assume it’s unnecessary. It isn’t. What we found on his lift was typical: cable tension had drifted slightly as the cables took their initial stretch, one lock dog needed lubrication, and a hydraulic fitting had a faint weep that would have become a real leak by year three. Twenty minutes of adjustment and a fitting replacement.
That first-year cable stretch is the single most predictable finding on any new four-post, and it’s why we always recommend the twelve-month check even when nothing feels wrong. We retensioned, cycled the lift a dozen times, verified all four locks engaged simultaneously, torque-checked the base plates, and inspected the runway welds and cross-member pins. Everything got written down and left with him, because documentation is what turns an autolift garage into a maintained asset instead of an aging unknown. He’s now on an annual schedule with us. What He’d Do Differently, and What We Tell the Next Caller
Asked at the one-year mark what he’d change, he said two things. He’d have run more 220V circuits during the build instead of one, because a tire machine and a compressor showed up within six months. And he’d have bought the caster kit up front — being able to reposition the four-post seasonally, even at 12,000 lb capacity, turned out to be worth far more than the modest add-on cost. Everything else he’d do the same, including paying for certified equipment and professional installation rather than assembling it himself over a long weekend.
That’s the advice we give the next caller too. Measure to the lowest obstruction, not the peak. Buy ALI-certified. Decide whether alignment work is in your future before you order, not after.
