Why the site survey matters before you buy
A home-garage lift is a one-time purchase for most hobbyists, and returns and rework are expensive. The site survey is the way to eliminate the guesswork before the credit card comes out. It covers seven categories: ceiling clearance at the lowest obstruction, slab thickness and condition, electrical service capacity, door dimensions and swing, drive-in clearance, adjacent-wall clearance, and drainage and floor slope. Miss any one of these and the lift purchase becomes complicated. Do all seven and the install is boring in the best way.
The survey does not require special tools. A 25-foot tape, a flashlight, a bubble level, and a hammer to sound the slab are enough for the home-garage version. We can walk a hobbyist through the survey over the phone in about 30 minutes, and we send a survey checklist template on request. The most common failure mode we see is a buyer who measured the ceiling at the peak of the roof rather than at the lowest obstruction, and then discovered their new lift would not clear the sprinkler head or the garage-door opener rail. That mistake is $1,500 in restocking fees and freight, and it is completely preventable with a proper site survey for the autolift garage.
Measuring ceiling clearance with the door open
The number that matters is not the ceiling height at the wall. It is the ceiling height at the lift centerline, with the garage door in its open position. On most residential garages, the door rails and the door itself in open position occupy the highest 12 to 18 inches of the door-side ceiling. If the lift centerline sits under that rail, the effective ceiling is much lower than the nominal ceiling. Measure with the door open, at the exact spot the lift will sit, from finished floor to the lowest obstruction directly overhead.

For a four-post drive-on home-storage lift, 11 feet 6 inches. For a mid-rise scissor, 8 feet 6 inches is workable. Most residential garages built after 2000 have 10 to 12 feet of ceiling, and the four-post home-storage lift is often the right answer for that constraint. Slab thickness and rebar
Home garages built as attached structures usually have a 4-inch slab with fiber mesh or no reinforcement. Home garages built as detached pole buildings usually have a 4 to 6 inch slab with rebar. Home-storage four-post lifts under 9,000 lb capacity typically work on a 4-inch slab without modification. Two-post lifts at 10,000 lb capacity usually require a 4-inch minimum at 3,000 psi with wedge-anchor tension confirmed on install day. Older slabs from the 1980s and earlier may be under 4 inches and may not hold anchor tension reliably.
The slab-check for a hobbyist survey is a sound test: tap the slab with a hammer at the intended anchor locations and listen for hollow or dead spots. A well-consolidated slab rings solid. A slab with delamination or an air void underneath sounds hollow. If the sound test raises questions, we recommend a core sample before purchase, which a local concrete contractor can do for $300 to $500. The peace of mind is worth the cost, and it prevents an anchor pull-out failure at year 3 that would put the vehicle and the hobbyist at risk in the autolift garage.
Electrical service check
Most home lifts require a dedicated 208-230V single-phase 30-amp circuit. Home garages often do not have that circuit already, and adding it requires a licensed electrician. For a detached garage, adding the circuit may also require running a subpanel from the main house panel through underground conduit, which is a bigger job. Cost for the electrical add ranges from $400 for a simple attached-garage run to $2,500 for a detached-garage subpanel with 100-foot underground conduit.
The pre-purchase check is to walk to the main electrical panel and confirm two things: spare capacity for a 30-amp two-pole breaker, and total service size. A 100-amp service panel with existing loads for HVAC, kitchen appliances, and laundry may not have headroom for the lift, and adding it requires a service upgrade. A 200-amp panel almost always has room. If the panel evaluation is unclear, an electrician site visit before the lift purchase is worthwhile. Building the electrical cost into the total autolift garage budget from day one prevents a surprise mid-install.
Door and workflow flow
The door check has two dimensions: nominal door size and effective drive-in path. Nominal is easy: a standard 9×7 residential door works for a Malibu, does not work for a full-size crew-cab pickup. A 10×8 works for most pickups. A 10×9 works for a lifted truck or a roof-rack load. If the plan is to work on a variety of vehicles including trucks, spec the 10×8 minimum for the door itself.
Effective drive-in path is the second dimension. From the door threshold to the lift centerline, the vehicle needs enough runway to pull straight in and align with the arm swing. For a two-post, that means the door needs to sit 8 to 10 feet in front of the lift columns. For a four-post drive-on, the door needs to sit 6 feet in front of the runway approach. If the garage is short depth and the door is close to the lift, the vehicle cannot straighten out and the workflow suffers. Delivery and freight logistics
Home lifts ship freight, not parcel. A two-post lift is roughly 1,600 to 2,000 lb crated, and a four-post drive-on is 2,000 to 2,600 lb. Freight arrives on a semi with a liftgate service, and the driver drops the crate at the curb or driveway edge. From the driveway to the garage, the hobbyist is responsible for moving the crated components inside. On a residential lot with a short driveway, this is manageable with a pallet jack and a helper. On a long rural driveway with grade, it becomes a bigger project.
We coordinate freight delivery timing with the hobbyist and provide a rigging plan for the last-100-foot move.
