When a bay does a lot of hub-and-bearing work, the lift stops being a generic tool and becomes a workflow. You need the wheel free of the ground, the caliper hanging clean, and a rock-solid stance while a tech reefs on a torqued-down knuckle nut. That’s not what every autolift garage delivers out of the box. Symmetric two-post lifts with swing arms that clear the door jamb by a couple inches give the tech room to stage a bearing press, run a hub tamer, and swing an impact without dancing around a column.

Three geometry numbers change your day: minimum arm pad height (how low the pucks go, which controls how easily you slide under a Subaru), maximum lift height (how high a knuckle sits when you’re finally standing straight), and arm swing angle (how far the arms rotate to clear the door). Everything else — motor size, cable count, hose runs — matters, but those three define the ergonomics.
For daily wheel bearing service you want a minimum arm height under 4.5 inches, maximum lift over 74 inches, and enough arm swing that the front-door edge of a crew-cab pickup swings clear. Cheap arms and short front-arm sets fight you on all three. A shop that lifts three Explorers, two Silverados, a Golf and a Corolla each day isn’t shopped the same as one lifting Peterbilts. Two-post versus four-post for daily bearing and hub work
Two-post is the answer for wheel-off work. Four-post drives on with the wheels loaded, so any hub, brake, bearing or suspension job requires a jack-tray and a rolling jack — now you’re doing two operations to get one wheel free. Every body shop foreman we’ve built a bay for has come to the same conclusion. A four-post autolift garage has a place — alignment, storage, long inspections — but a bay dedicated to bearings should be a two-post first.
If you’re building two bays, we like a heavy 10K asymmetric two-post in bay one and a four-post with rolling jacks and a slip plate in bay two. Not every spec on a datasheet holds resale value. ALI Gold certification does. Brand and model number do. Overhead versus baseplate does — overhead reads modern and moves faster on the used market. Symmetric versus asymmetric matters less than most buyers think, because most shops adapt. Motor voltage matters because a 220V single-phase lift has a wider buyer pool than three-phase. Cable brand and installation date matter more than most sellers realize; a lift with fresh Rotary or Challenger cables installed by an ALI-certified installer will sell for hundreds more than one with unknown-age wire rope.
Paint condition on the columns is a visual proxy — buyers assume a chipped, gouged column has taken abuse, whether it has or not. On the flip side, spec-sheet items that do not hold value: rise speed (nobody reads that at resale), motor horsepower (once you’re at 2 HP, more is invisible), cable count (three-stage versus two-stage arms matter more than how many strands the sheave sees).
