An autolift garage for heavy-duty truck work is a different animal than a passenger-vehicle shop, and the cost breakdown reflects that. We get calls from southwest Iowa truck-shop owners who priced a 10,000-lb 2-post for a passenger fleet and were shocked when the quote for a 30,000-lb mobile-column setup came back at three times the number. The Lift Itself: Where the Money Goes

A heavy-duty autolift garage starts with picking the right lift class. Four mobile columns in a 60,000-lb combined capacity setup lets you lift a Class 7 or Class 8 tractor without an inground pit. Two heavy-duty 2-post inground lifts give you the classic bus-and-truck shop layout. The mobile-column route is more flexible but has more moving parts. The inground route locks you into your bay layout but frees up floor space. For a small heavy-duty shop in southwest Iowa doing tractor, box truck, and larger service-truck work, a set of four mobile columns hits the sweet spot on flexibility and future-proofing. The lift itself is roughly 40 to 50 percent of the total autolift garage build cost. Cables, jacks, and safety accessories account for another 15 percent. Concrete, electrical, and install labor pick up the rest. That ratio holds surprisingly well across our HD quotes.

Concrete and Slab Prep for HD Weight

Heavy-duty autolift garage concrete requirements are not the same as passenger-vehicle spec. A four-column mobile-column setup rated for 60,000 lb combined puts serious point loading on the slab. Most manufacturers spec a 6-inch minimum pour at 4,000 PSI with rebar, and some require 8 inches for the higher-capacity systems. If your shop was built for lighter fleet work and the slab is only 4 inches at 3,000 PSI, you are looking at a saw-cut and pour-over for the lift footprint, or a full slab overlay. That is a real cost line, often 20 to 30 percent of the lift price itself. We inspect the slab before quoting the install and, when needed, coordinate with local Iowa concrete contractors who have poured lift pads before. Do not skip the slab check to save money. A cracked slab under a loaded lift ends careers.

Electrical: 3-Phase, Single-Phase, and What Your Shop Actually Has

Most heavy-duty autolift garage systems want 3-phase power. Mobile columns can be spec’d for single-phase if you know at order time, but the 3-phase versions are cheaper to run and pull less amperage per column. Southwest Iowa shops on rural power sometimes only have single-phase service to the building, and upgrading to 3-phase from the utility is a nontrivial cost. We ask on the first call. If you are single-phase only, we spec the lift accordingly and there is no penalty other than a slightly larger motor package. If you have 3-phase available, we spec it that way and you save on electrical operating cost across the life of the shop. Panel capacity is the other check. A four-column mobile-column set can pull real amperage on simultaneous lift, and your existing panel may not have the headroom. Budget for a panel upgrade if the shop was built before 2000.

Freight, Install Labor, and Annual State Inspection Setup

Freight on a heavy-duty autolift garage is not trivial. A four-column mobile system ships on a full flatbed and requires forklift unload on the customer side. If your shop does not have a forklift rated for the column weight, we bring one on the install truck. Install labor for a mobile-column set runs one to two full days with a two-person crew. Inground lifts are three to five days including concrete cut, pit form, and cure time. Annual state inspection setup means adding a lighting spec that meets your state’s inspection lane requirements, plus a mirrored dolly or an overhead camera system for undercarriage documentation. That is another 5 to 10 percent of the total build, and it pays back in inspection throughput within the first year.

Cables, Cylinders, and Wearable Parts Budget

Every heavy-duty autolift garage needs a parts budget from day one. Cables on a mobile-column system are heavier than on a passenger 2-post, and the replacement cost reflects that. Plan for a full cable set replacement at year seven to ten under heavy duty. Hydraulic cylinders on HD lifts are similarly heavier, and rebuild kits cost proportionally more, though a rebuild is still a fraction of a new cylinder assembly. We recommend HD shops keep a rebuild kit for every column on hand at all times. A cylinder failure with no rebuild kit means a truck stuck in the bay until parts arrive, and that is lost billable hours you cannot recover. Bay Layout and Workflow: The Hidden Cost

The autolift garage layout you choose affects billable hours more than any other decision. A single-bay HD shop maxes out at one truck at a time, full stop. A two-bay shop with shared column storage between bays can move columns between bays as work demands, effectively doubling flexibility without doubling lift cost. A three-bay shop with dedicated lifts per bay is the highest throughput but the highest capital cost. For most southwest Iowa HD shops we quote a two-bay flexible layout as the sweet spot. Column storage requires a small dedicated area outside the drive-through, and we design that into the initial quote. Air lines, fluid drops, tool cabinets, and lighting all get planned around the lift positioning. Cheap on layout up front costs you every day of the shop’s life. Spend the extra day of planning.

Total Build Timeline and Payback Math

A full heavy-duty autolift garage build from initial call to first lift raise runs six to twelve weeks depending on freight, concrete work, and electrical scheduling. Mobile-column installs are on the faster end; inground pit builds are on the slower end. Payback math for an HD shop is typically 18 to 30 months on a mobile-column system running normal service volume. That assumes billable hours recovered from faster lifts, higher truck-per-day throughput, and reduced sub-out on state inspection work.
