The single most-underestimated autolift garage spec is overhead clearance. A full-rise 2-post lift with an overhead cross-beam typically needs 12 to 13 feet of clear structural ceiling to fully raise a standard full-size SUV or pickup. Dealership bays built in the 1990s were often designed for smaller vehicles and have 11-foot clear ceilings, which puts today’s Ford Expedition or Chevy Tahoe just short of full raise. The workaround is either an asymmetric lift with a lower overhead, a baseplate configuration that puts the crossbar at the floor, or a taller building. Do not measure to the drywall; measure to steel. The lift manual will list minimum clearance in inches, and it is not a suggestion.
Arm Reach, Pad Positioning, and Vehicle Fit
Every autolift garage 2-post lift has a published arm-reach range, and dealerships need to check it against every vehicle in their brand’s current lineup. Arms too short cannot reach a long-wheelbase vehicle’s lift points; arms too long can foul on the vehicle body at extreme extension. Most modern lifts publish a minimum reach around 26 to 30 inches and a maximum reach around 60 to 78 inches. A dealership carrying compact through full-size pickups needs arms that cover the full range. Adjustable-height pad extensions are essential and should be included in every quote. We stock pad extension sets from 3 inches through 12 inches for every major brand, and we typically ship a set with each new lift so the tech does not run out of vertical adjustment on a low frame rail. Vehicle fit is where the sales-brochure clearance numbers meet reality, and reality bites if you skip the check.
Anchor Pattern and Slab Requirements
Dealership autolift garage installations lean heavily on anchor pattern and slab spec because a dealership shop typically has fifteen to twenty-five lift positions and the concrete has to support them all. Each 2-post lift anchor pattern is roughly 90 to 120 inches column-to-column with four anchors per column, drilled to a specific depth per manufacturer spec. Slab thickness at anchor positions must be a minimum of 4.25 inches at 3,000 PSI for a 10,000-lb lift, and 6 inches at 4,000 PSI for anything heavier. If your existing dealership slab has expansion joints running through a proposed lift footprint, the lift cannot be installed on the joint; anchors must clear the joint by a minimum offset per spec. We overlay the anchor pattern onto a slab drawing before we commit an install position. Do not skip this step. Retrofit anchor moves after concrete drill are expensive.
Brand Pipeline: Why Rotary and Challenger Dominate Dealership Bays
The autolift garage brand pipeline question at a dealership scale is different than at an independent shop. Dealerships need parts availability across fifteen or more lifts, sometimes twenty years old, and they need a single supplier who can source cables, cylinders, arms, and safety locks across the entire fleet without hunting. The ideal differential-service bay pairs a 2-post lift with a fluid-transfer machine on a swing arm, a waste-fluid capture drum plumbed to a shop drain, and a tool cart with the specific socket sizes for the drain and fill plugs of the brand’s vehicles. Tech ergonomics is the payoff. A well-laid-out differential bay lets a tech complete a full drain, fill, and check in fifteen minutes without walking more than five feet. A badly laid-out bay wastes forty percent of the tech’s time on movement. A dealership bay may run twenty to forty lift-raise cycles a day, five to six days a week, fifty weeks a year. That is 5,000 to 12,000 cycles annually per lift. Cables, cylinder seals, and safety-lock ratchet mechanisms wear on cycle count, not calendar age. A dealership should expect cable replacement at years five to seven under heavy duty, cylinder seal rebuild at years seven to nine, and safety-lock inspection every year with replacement as needed.
