Setting up an autolift garage the right way is a sequencing problem before it is a shopping problem. Why an autolift garage starts with the slab, not the lift
The single most common mistake we see in an autolift garage build is treating the slab as an afterthought. A 4-post storage lift with two vehicles on it can concentrate 10,000 to 14,000 pounds on four small footpads, and a 2-post will punch even harder because the load is not spread across rails. Our Davenport foreman had poured 4 inches of unreinforced concrete because that is what the pole-barn kit called for. That works for a car sitting flat. It does not work for a lift. We had him core-drill four sample plugs, saw-cut the footprint of the future lift, and pour reinforced 6-inch pads inside the existing slab. Do this before you buy the lift and you can pick any model. Do it after and your options shrink. If you are still in the design phase for an autolift garage, put the lift on the blueprint the same day you spec the concrete.
Ceiling height decisions that lock in your model
Twelve-foot sidewalls sound tall until you park a tall pickup under a car on a storage lift. For a genuine two-vehicle-tall autolift garage we want at least 12 feet of clear interior height, and 14 is better if you plan to store lifted trucks or vans. Our Davenport client had a 12-foot sidewall but a scissor truss that dropped the center to just under 11 feet 6 inches, and that ruled out the taller 4-post models. He landed on a mid-rise 4-post rated at 9,000 pounds with a 72-inch overall raised height, which fits a 6-foot-tall sedan underneath a mid-height truck comfortably. If you are still in design, spec a straight truss or a raised heel, and tell the pole-barn crew the exact clearance you need for your autolift garage. Getting an extra foot at framing time is free. Getting it after the roof is on is a demo bill.
Doors, drive lanes, and how you actually use the space
The second sequencing miss we see is door placement. A body shop foreman needs a drive-through lane at least part of the year, so we plan doors on opposite gable ends. For a pure storage autolift garage a single overhead door works, but only if the lift sits deep enough that you can walk around the vehicle on the ground level. Fourteen-foot-wide doors are the sweet spot for extended-cab pickups and enclosed trailers coming in with a stored car. If you are pairing a lift with a paint booth or frame rack, sketch the traffic pattern before you commit. We drew our Davenport project three times before the door on the east gable moved to accommodate a rolling floor jack path under the lift. Do that thinking in a notebook. It costs nothing and saves you from cutting a new opening.
Electrical: single-phase, three-phase, and the honest tradeoffs
For a home or small commercial autolift garage in Davenport you almost always run single-phase 220. That is the standard we spec for every 4-post storage lift and most 2-post commercial lifts. Three-phase is rare outside industrial parks in the Quad Cities and it costs the utility real money to bring to a new pole building. If you already have three-phase to your shop panel, use it. Pull the wire in conduit under the slab if you can. Overhead drops work too but they clutter the ceiling. Choosing between a 4-post and a 2-post for seasonal storage
The Davenport foreman asked us the same question every buyer asks: 4-post or 2-post? For seasonal vehicle storage, 4-post wins. It rolls on casters so you can reposition it in a shared bay, it does not require anchor bolts through a certified slab, and you can leave a vehicle parked on it for six months without stressing any component. A 2-post gets you access to the underside of the vehicle for service, but it demands a heavier slab, anchored bolts through certified concrete, and is not designed for long-term parking. Our recommendation for a seasonal-storage-first autolift garage is a 9,000 or 10,000-pound 4-post with an optional rolling jack tray. If you also want to work on the vehicle, add the jack tray or plan a second bay for a 2-post later.
Anchoring, leveling, and the install day itself
Install day for an autolift garage in the Davenport area usually runs six to eight hours with our two-person crew if the slab is ready. We arrive with a forklift or a rated pallet jack depending on access, unload the columns, and start with a full square-and-plumb of the slab. Any dip more than a quarter inch across the footprint gets shimmed with steel plates, not plastic. A 2-post gets ten wedge anchors, torqued to spec, and a torque wrench signature on the paperwork. A 4-post is anchored optionally, and for pure storage many owners skip it. We fill and bleed the hydraulic system, run three empty cycles, then run a loaded cycle with a real vehicle. For a seasonal storage build we set the first inspection at 12 months and the cable inspection at 24 months. For a working shop we tighten both. We register the warranty in your name with the manufacturer before we leave the site so you never have to. If the county calls for an occupancy sign-off on the new pole building, the ALI paperwork usually covers what the inspector needs. Keep the folder in the shop, not at the house. Nobody ever remembers to bring it back when a warranty question comes up. Our Davenport client hangs his on a nail next to the disconnect. That is the right idea.
