Installation Labor: What a Cedar Falls Install Really Involves

Concrete: What You Can’t Cut and What You Can

Heavy-duty two-post columns require a real slab. For a 15,000-lb two-post, most manufacturers spec a minimum six-inch, 4,000-PSI floor at the column footprint. If your Cedar Falls shop is going into an existing building with a four-inch slab, we can often sawcut a pad — usually a 5-by-5-foot section under each column — and pour a properly reinforced footer. That footer add falls in the low-thousands-per-column range depending on rebar spec, concrete price, and cure time.

If you’re pouring new for a new building, spec six to eight inches under the entire service bay with #5 rebar on 12-inch centers. The premium over a light residential slab is small; the payoff is that you can upgrade lifts later without ripping concrete. Electrical: 220V, 240V, and the Three-Phase Question

Heavy-duty two-post lifts run on either 220V single-phase or 208/230/460V three-phase. Single-phase is simpler and works fine up to about 18,000-lb capacity; above that, three-phase pumps are faster and standard. If your Cedar Falls building has three-phase service — most industrial parks do — spec three-phase pumps and enjoy 20 to 30 percent faster lift times. Time saved per cycle adds up over ten years.

If you’re single-phase only, that’s not a deal-breaker. We spec dedicated 30-amp two-pole circuits with 10-gauge feeders and a fused disconnect at the column. Site Prep, Freight, and the Little Costs That Add Up

Line items that don’t show up on the big spec sheet: freight from the manufacturer distribution center (freight has spiked and settled over the last three years, so we quote it live), offload with a forklift or lift-gate, coring or drilling for anchor bolts, hydraulic hose extensions if the pump is offset, and a factory-recommended fluid fill and bleed. Individually small; collectively real.

We also budget for the little things a Cedar Falls truck shop needs on day one: a stack of pad adapters for varying frame heights, a set of extended arms for heavier medium-duty work, a bridge jack if the lift is going four-post, and a spare hydraulic hose for the day one goes bad in the middle of a job. Fluid: change it at the manufacturer interval, keep a filter clean, and don’t top up with random buckets. Cables: inspect quarterly, replace at manufacturer spec or first sign of broken strands. Arm restraints: check that they engage every raise, and never operate a lift with a slipping restraint. The parts for all three are inexpensive; the labor to prevent a catastrophic failure is minimal.
