Last year we put a two-post into an autolift garage on the edge of Cedar Rapids for a guy who builds overland rigs — a 4Runner on 34s, a Tacoma with a bed rack and a rear locker, and a Land Cruiser project that had been on jack stands since the previous fall. His problem was not the vehicles. It was that every job he cared about was underneath: exhaust rework to clear a skid plate, driveshaft angles after a lift kit, transfer case fluid, and endless bolt-on armor. Ten months into ownership the power unit started dropping pressure overnight, and we filed a warranty claim. This is the whole story, install through claim, because warranty is the part nobody asks about until they need it.

The Build: Sizing a Lift Around a Lifted Truck

An overland rig breaks most of the assumptions that come with a home lift. Start with weight. A loaded Tacoma with steel bumpers, a drawer system, sliders, and a full tank is well past what people guess, and a 4Runner with armor and 34s is not far behind. Then add height: the vehicle already sits several inches taller than stock, and the frame rail you need to lift from is higher off the ground than the pad range on a bargain unit expects. Then add width — 35s and wide fender flares mean the vehicle is wider than the runway of most four-posts and needs real clearance between columns.

So for this Cedar Rapids build we specced a 10,000 lb asymmetric two-post with tall columns and telescoping arms with screw-up pad extensions, sitting in a shop with roughly 13 feet to the lowest truss. That combination matters. Tall columns give the lift travel to get a tall truck’s frame to working height instead of chest height. Screw-up extensions bridge the gap between the arm and a pinch weld or frame pocket on a lifted vehicle. Asymmetric column rotation buys door clearance, which sounds like a luxury until you are climbing in and out of a rig forty times during a driveline job. We also sized the bay so a trailer could still pass on one side. An autolift garage that only works when nothing else is in the building is not much of a shop.

Exhaust and Driveline Access: What the Lift Changed

The reason this customer bought was exhaust and driveline work, and that is where a two-post earns its money over anything else. When a lift kit goes on a solid-axle or IFS truck, driveshaft angles change, and the fix — pinion shims, a longer shaft, a carrier bearing drop, sometimes a whole new rear shaft — requires you to measure angles with the suspension in a known state and then get a wrench on flange bolts that are packed with Iowa road salt. On jack stands that job takes a weekend and a chiropractor. With the wheels hanging free at chest height, it takes an evening.

Exhaust was the same story. Routing a 3-inch system around a new gas tank skid and a rear bumper crossmember means fitting, marking, pulling it down, cutting, and going back up — probably eight cycles. Each cycle on the floor is twenty minutes of dragging a creeper and repositioning stands. On the lift it is two minutes. That is the actual value proposition of a home lift, and it is not really about safety margin or bragging rights: it is that jobs you would have put off for a year become a Tuesday night. He knocked out the Land Cruiser that had been sitting on stands within about six weeks of the install. If you are weighing whether an autolift garage is worth it for a build-heavy hobby, count the projects you have deferred, not the hours you will save per job.

What Warranty Actually Covers on a Lift

Now the part everybody skips at purchase. Lift warranties are almost always tiered, and the tiers are not arbitrary — they track how likely a part is to fail from manufacturing defect versus wear. Typical structure on the brands we sell: a long term on structural steel, which is the columns, carriages, and arms; a shorter term on the power unit, which is the motor, pump, and reservoir assembly; a shorter term still on hydraulic components like the cylinder and valve; and a short or excluded term on wear items. Wear items are cables, pads, latch springs, sheaves, hoses, and anything that consumes itself in normal use.

What is excluded matters as much as what is covered. Improper installation voids most of it, which is why anchor torque, column plumb, and slab spec are not bureaucratic box-checking. So does using the wrong hydraulic fluid, exceeding rated capacity, skipping the required annual inspection on a commercial machine, or modifying the lift. Freight damage is a separate claim entirely and has to be noted at delivery, not three weeks later when you finally uncrate. Labor is the other thing people misread: many manufacturer warranties cover the part and not the labor to swap it, or cover labor only during the first year. For a home autolift garage, that is the difference between a free power unit showing up at your door and a free power unit plus a tech to install it. The Claim: Symptom to Diagnosis

Ten months in, the customer called and said the lift was settling overnight — a rig left up on the locks was fine, but if he left it on hydraulic pressure it would drop several inches by morning, and lift speed under a loaded truck had gotten noticeably slower. That is a useful pair of symptoms, and it narrows things fast. Slow settling with a loaded lift usually means fluid is going somewhere it should not: past the cylinder piston seal, past the check valve or velocity fuse in the power unit, or out through a fitting. Slower lift speed points more at the pump or the check valve than at the cylinder.

We drove over from Ames with a pressure gauge and a clean rag. First step was the boring one — inspect every fitting, hose, and the cylinder rod for wet spots, because a slow external leak looks identical to an internal one from the driver’s seat. Everything was dry, and the reservoir level was where it should be, which told us the fluid was recirculating internally rather than escaping. Next we isolated the cylinder by capping the line and holding pressure; the cylinder held. That put it on the power unit, and specifically the check valve seat. We confirmed with a gauge that pressure bled back through the valve with the motor off. Documented diagnosis, photos, model and serial off the column tag, hour and install-date records, and we had a claim package. In a home autolift garage that whole visit was about ninety minutes.

How the Claim Workflow Actually Runs

Here is the honest sequence, because the internet version of “just call the manufacturer” leaves out the friction. We open the claim as the selling and installing dealer, which matters — a manufacturer takes a documented dealer diagnosis far more seriously than a homeowner’s description, and we have direct claim channels with the brands we carry. The package includes model and serial, proof of purchase, install date and installer, a written description of the fault, photos of the failed component and the data tag, and the diagnostic steps that ruled out everything else. If the required annual inspection applies, that record goes in too.

The manufacturer reviews and, on a clear defect inside the covered term, authorizes a replacement part. Turnaround on a common power unit is usually days, not weeks, because these are stocked items. Sometimes they want the failed part returned for teardown, which means we ship the old unit back with an RMA number attached — miss that step and the claim can get denied on paperwork alone. Then we install the replacement, cycle and bleed the system, load test, and re-verify lock engagement. In this Cedar Rapids case the customer paid nothing for the part and a modest amount for our labor, because he was past the labor-inclusive window. Total downtime was about a week. That is a normal outcome. The reason it went smoothly is not luck — it is that the install was documented, the serial was recorded, and somebody in Iowa with a relationship at the factory made the call. That is worth more than a small discount from an out-of-state box shipper, and it is the argument we make to every autolift garage buyer who is comparing quotes on price alone. Documentation That Protects Your Claim

Most denied claims we see are not denied because the part was fine. They are denied because nobody can prove the basics. So the day your lift goes in, build a folder — physical or a phone album, it does not matter — and put five things in it. One: the invoice with model and serial. Two: a photo of the data tag on the column. Three: the install date and who did it, including anchor torque values if you installed it yourself. Four: the manual and the warranty document for that exact model. Five: a running log of anything you replaced or adjusted, with dates.

Add photos over time. When you first fill the reservoir, note the fluid you used, because “wrong fluid” is a real denial reason and a receipt settles it instantly. Photograph your cables at install so a future inspector can see baseline condition. If freight showed up with a dented column or a crushed hose box, photograph the crate before you cut a strap and note it on the delivery paperwork — freight claims die on day two. And keep the annual inspection record if your use is commercial. None of this takes more than fifteen minutes total across the life of the machine, and it is the difference between a covered replacement and an argument. What We’d Tell the Next Cedar Rapids Builder

If you are in eastern Iowa and planning a shop around a build habit rather than around daily maintenance, a few things are worth paying for and a few are not. Pay for column height and arm reach. A lifted truck at full extension on a short-column unit puts the frame at a height that makes overhead work miserable and driveline angles hard to measure. Pay for a real brand with stocked parts, because the part you will eventually need is a power unit, a cylinder, or a cable set, and you want those on a shelf in the Midwest rather than on a container. Pay for a professional install with documented anchor torque, because that single piece of paper is what keeps your warranty alive.

Skip the exotic options. Air-actuated lock releases, fancy consoles, and integrated lighting are nice but they are not what makes a shop productive. Put that money into a good rolling jack or a transmission jack instead, or into more air capacity, or into getting the electrical done right the first time with a dedicated 230V circuit sized properly. And plan the whole bay, not just the lift footprint: where does the creeper live, where do the wheels go when they come off, can you still walk past a column with a driveshaft in your hands.
