A mobile mechanic working the Iowa-Illinois corridor called us last spring because he was tired of doing wheel bearing jobs on a creeper in gravel driveways between Davenport and Muscatine. He had a 36×48 building going up on his own property and wanted an autolift garage he could pull vehicles into when the weather turned or when a hub press job needed more than a floor jack and prayer. That conversation turned into an install we finished in about a day and a half, and it’s a good case study for anyone in eastern Iowa or western Illinois weighing the same move. Why a Mobile Mechanic Finally Needed a Fixed Bay

Mobile work pays well right up until the job requires torque, height, and a clean place to set parts. Wheel bearing service is exactly that job. On a lot of late-model front-drive cars and half-ton trucks you’re pulling a knuckle, pressing a hub assembly, and fighting corrosion that’s been building since the last time the roads got salted. Doing that at ground level in a customer’s driveway in February in the Iowa-Illinois corridor is miserable and slow. Our customer was averaging three and a half hours on bearing jobs that a shop with a lift knocks out in ninety minutes.

The math got obvious fast. He wasn’t abandoning mobile service — most of his revenue still comes from going to fleets and farms — but he wanted a home base for the heavy stuff. That’s the practical definition of an autolift garage: a building with power, concrete, and one good lift where the jobs that shouldn’t happen on the ground get done properly. He kept the van, added the bay, and started scheduling bearing, brake, and suspension work into the shop while keeping diagnostics and light repair on the road. Within a couple of months he told us the lift was paying for itself in recovered labor hours alone, before you even count the jobs he could suddenly say yes to.

Concrete, Ceilings, and the Two Numbers That Decide Everything

Before we quote anything we ask two questions: how thick is your slab and how tall is your ceiling. Everything else is negotiable. For a two-post lift in the 10,000 lb class we want a minimum of four inches of 3,000 PSI concrete, and we’d rather see five or six. New pole buildings in eastern Iowa are frequently poured at four inches with fiber mesh, which works, but we always ask whether the contractor thickened the pad anywhere. If nobody knows, we core test or we pour footings. It’s cheaper to fix concrete before the columns go up than to chase anchor pull-out later.

Ceiling height sets the rest. Twelve-foot sidewalls are common and they’ll take a standard clearfloor two-post with a 12-foot overhead beam, but if you have trusses hanging down or lights in the wrong place you may want a baseplate model instead. The mechanic in this case study had 14-foot walls, which gave us room for a clearfloor unit and full rise on a lifted pickup. We also mapped his overhead door swing and his air lines before we drilled anything. A good autolift garage layout leaves at least three feet of walk-around on the drive-through side and puts the power unit on the side you actually approach from, not the side that looked good on paper.

Brand History Matters More Than the Brochure

People ask us to compare spec sheets, and spec sheets between competing lifts look nearly identical. Capacity, rise time, lifting height — the numbers converge. What doesn’t converge is how long a manufacturer has been building the same product and whether they still support the units they sold twenty years ago. Rotary has been making two-post lifts since the industry basically invented them, and we can still get carriage slide blocks and equalizer cables for machines from the 1990s. Challenger has a similar track record on the commercial side. That history is the reason we recommend them for a working shop.

For home and lighter-duty builds we’ll spec BendPak or Atlas, and both are solid for the money. The distinction we draw is duty cycle. A guy lifting his own truck twice a month has different needs than a mechanic putting fifteen cycles a day on the arms. If the lift is the center of a working autolift garage, buy the brand with a forty-year parts trail. The mobile mechanic in this case went with a Rotary two-post because he’d used one at a previous employer and knew the arm geometry. Familiarity is worth something too — you know where the safety releases are without thinking, and that matters at 5 p.m. on a Friday. The Parts Pipeline Behind a Lift You Never Think About

Here’s the part nobody considers at purchase time and everybody considers at breakdown time. When a cable stretches, a lock dog wears, or a cylinder seal starts weeping, how fast can you get the piece? We stock cables, cylinders, lock assemblies, slide blocks, arm pins, and power unit components for the major brands in Iowa, and we ship them out same day when they’re on the shelf. That’s the whole reason we run a parts operation alongside the install business — we got tired of watching shops sit dead for three weeks waiting on a factory backorder.

Off-brand and gray-market lifts are where the pipeline breaks down. We’ve had shops call us with a lift bought online from an importer that no longer answers the phone, and the equalizer cable has a proprietary swage fitting nobody else makes. At that point you’re either fabricating or replacing the whole unit. That’s a five-figure lesson. When you build an autolift garage, you’re not just buying steel — you’re buying into a supply chain that either exists or doesn’t. Ask before you buy: who makes the replacement cable, who makes the seal kit, and can I get it in a week. If your supplier can’t answer, that’s your answer. Setting Up Specifically for Wheel Bearing and Hub Work

Once the lift was anchored and torqued, we spent time on workflow, because a bay that’s just a lift is only half useful. Wheel bearing service needs a press, and a 20-ton shop press wants a spot within a few steps of the lift so you’re not carrying a knuckle across the building. We suggested putting the press against the wall on the driver’s side approach with a rolling cart between it and the lift. Bearing jobs also generate a lot of small hardware, so a magnetic tray rack mounted to the column saves you from crawling around looking for the ABS sensor bolt.

Lighting is the other thing shops underestimate. When the vehicle is at chest height, the underside is in shadow unless you’ve got LED strips running parallel to the bay on both sides, not just one row down the center. We generally recommend two rows of high-output LEDs offset about six feet apart. For a bearing job where you’re looking for a hairline crack in a hub flange, that lighting difference is real. And run at least one 120V outlet high on each column — you’ll use it every day for the impact charger, the light, and the heat gun. Small stuff, but it’s the difference between a bay you enjoy working in and one you tolerate.

What the Install Day Actually Looked Like

We rolled in around 7 a.m. with the lift on the trailer, a hammer drill, a torque wrench, and a rotary laser. First hour is layout: snap chalk lines, confirm the bay is square to the door, verify column spacing against the manufacturer’s drawing, and shoot the floor for level. That last step catches problems. This slab dropped about three-eighths of an inch across the bay width, which is normal and easily shimmed, but if you skip the check you find out when the carriages don’t sync.

Anchors went in next, then columns, overhead beam, cables, hydraulics, and electrical. We bled the system, ran the lift through a dozen full cycles empty, then loaded it with the mechanic’s own pickup and cycled it again while checking lock engagement at every position. Total time was about eleven hours across a day and a half including the electrician’s portion. The customer’s autolift garage went from bare concrete to a functioning bay in less time than it takes most people to decide on a color. We handed him a laminated inspection checklist, showed him where the grease points are, and set a reminder for a six-month cable check. What It Costs and How to Budget Realistically

We don’t publish exact prices because they move and because every building is different, but here’s the honest framework. A quality 10,000 lb two-post from a brand with a real parts pipeline lands in the low-to-mid four-figure range for the equipment. Professional installation with anchors, leveling, and commissioning typically adds a low four-figure amount depending on drive distance and whether the concrete needs work. Electrical — a dedicated 220V circuit run to the column — is usually a few hundred to a thousand depending on how far your panel is.

Then budget a maintenance reserve. Cables are a wear item and get replaced every several years under heavy use. Seal kits, lock dogs, and slide blocks are consumables on a busy lift. Setting aside a few hundred dollars a year keeps you from making a bad decision in a bad moment. The mechanic in this case study built his budget with a 15 percent contingency and ended up using about half of it on concrete work we found during layout. That’s typical.
