The question we get most often from weekend mechanics building an autolift garage isn’t about capacity or brand — it’s “do I need to call an electrician?” Usually the answer is yes, and usually it’s less painful than people fear. A hobbyist who does his own brakes, fluids, exhaust work, and the occasional suspension refresh doesn’t need three-phase power or a commercial service. He does need the right circuit, in the right place, sized correctly, before the crate shows up on his driveway.

110V or 220V: The First Real Decision
Most home-shop lifts ship with a power unit that can be configured for either 110V single phase or 220V single phase, and a lot of buyers default to 110 because there’s already an outlet on the wall. It works. It also runs slower, draws considerably more amperage, and puts more thermal stress on the motor over time. A 110V power unit on a two-post typically pulls in the neighborhood of 25 to 30 amps at startup, which means a dedicated 20-amp circuit is marginal at best and a shared circuit with the compressor on it will trip the breaker the first time you raise a loaded truck.
Two-twenty is the better answer nearly every time. The same motor at 220V draws roughly half the current, comes up to speed faster, and runs cooler. Rise time on a 220V setup is noticeably quicker, which matters more than you’d think when you’re doing four or five up-and-downs on a Saturday afternoon rotating tires and chasing a rattle. For a hobbyist autolift garage where the lift cycles many times per session during general maintenance, that difference compounds. If you’re already running a 240V welder or an air compressor, you’ve likely got the panel headroom. And if you’re building the shop now, running 220 costs almost nothing extra while the walls are open compared to fishing it later.
Single Phase vs. Three Phase — and Why You Probably Don’t Care
Three-phase power is standard in commercial shops and essentially nonexistent in residential service across the Iowa-Illinois corridor. If you live in town or out on an acreage, your utility drop is single phase, full stop. Getting three phase run to a house is a project measured in thousands of dollars and utility engineering, and there is no reason for a home shop to pursue it.
The reason it comes up at all is because people shop used equipment. A lot of the affordable used commercial lifts floating around auction sites and dealer liquidations came out of shops with three-phase service, and the power unit on them is three-phase-only. Buy one for your single-phase garage and you now own a lift you cannot plug in. Your options are swapping the entire power unit for a single-phase equivalent, which is a real cost and sometimes a compatibility puzzle depending on the reservoir and mounting pattern, or installing a rotary phase converter or VFD, which adds another box, another failure point, and another thing to troubleshoot at 10 p.m. We’ve done both for customers and neither is a joy. If you’re shopping used, the very first question — before condition, before price — is what the motor nameplate says. Voltage, phase, horsepower. Take a photo of that plate and send it to us; we’ll tell you in five minutes whether it will run in your building.
Breaker Sizing, Wire Gauge, and Run Length
For a typical 220V single-phase home lift power unit in the 2 to 3 HP range, a 20-amp dedicated two-pole breaker is the common spec, with some larger units calling for 30 amp. Always follow the manufacturer’s plate and manual rather than a rule of thumb — we’ve seen units that want 30 and units that are happy at 20, and guessing high isn’t free because oversized breakers stop protecting the motor.
Wire gauge depends on both amperage and distance, and distance is where home shops get bitten. A detached garage or pole building 120 feet from the house panel has real voltage drop over that run. Undersized wire on a long run means the motor sees less than its rated voltage, draws more current to compensate, runs hot, and eventually cooks. Your electrician will do the calculation, but expect to go a gauge or two heavier than you’d assume for anything past 75 feet or so. This is also the moment to consider whether a subpanel in the shop makes more sense than a single home run. If you’re going to add a lift, a compressor, a welder, lights, and eventually a heater, a 60- or 100-amp subpanel out there is money well spent and turns the autolift garage from a one-circuit project into a proper shop. It’s the upgrade our customers say they wish they’d done first instead of third.
Where the Disconnect and Outlet Actually Go
Placement matters more than most people plan for. The power unit on a two-post sits at the top of one column, and the cord is not long. Put your outlet or hardwired disconnect within a few feet of that column, on the correct side, at a height that doesn’t require an extension cord. We’ve arrived at installs where the only 220 receptacle was on the opposite wall behind a workbench, and the customer’s solution was a heavy extension cord snaked across the floor — which is a trip hazard, a voltage-drop problem, and a code issue all in one.
Decide the lift’s exact position before the electrician comes. That means marking the column locations on the slab with chalk, accounting for drive-through width, door clearance, and where you want to walk. Then locate power accordingly. A local disconnect switch is a good idea regardless of whether code requires it in your jurisdiction — being able to kill power at the lift rather than hunting for a breaker in the house is worth the small cost, especially if you ever have someone else in the shop. Also plan a couple of general-purpose 120V receptacles near the lift for droplights, impact chargers, and a fan. On a four-post, the power unit typically mounts on a column or a nearby wall bracket, so the same logic applies with slightly more flexibility. Daily Maintenance Work and What It Demands from the Lift
A hobbyist doing general daily maintenance uses a lift differently than a commercial tech does. You’re up and down constantly — tires off, tires on, drain and fill, inspect, lower to check something, raise again. That cycling pattern is actually harder on a power unit than one long lift-and-hold, and it’s another argument for 220V and for buying a unit with a decent motor rather than the cheapest thing available.
It also shapes which style of lift fits. If your work is fluids, brakes, exhaust, and suspension, a two-post gives you the open floor and wheels-free access you want. If you also want to store a second vehicle underneath — which a lot of the hobbyists in our territory do, especially guys with a project car and a daily driver sharing a 30×40 pole building — a four-post makes more sense, and you can add rolling jacks for wheels-free work. We had a customer near the Mississippi with exactly that setup: 12-foot sidewalls, concrete floor, wanted maintenance capability plus storage for one car above and one below. A four-post in the 8,000 to 9,000 lb class solved it, and the electrical was a single 220V 20-amp circuit run from a new subpanel. That’s a very typical autolift garage in this region. Pre-Purchase Checklist: Run This Before You Order
Here’s the list we walk hobbyists through on the phone. One, panel capacity — what’s your main service, 100 amp or 200, and how many slots are free? Two, existing 240V circuits and what’s on them. Three, distance from panel to the intended lift location, measured along the actual wire path, not as the crow flies. Four, slab thickness, strength, and age. Five, ceiling height to the lowest obstruction — garage door tracks, opener, lights, joists. Six, heaviest vehicle you’ll ever put on it. Seven, whether you want storage capability or just service access.
Answer those seven and we can quote a complete project, electrical scope included, without guessing. Skip them and you get a surprise: the classic one is a customer who orders a lift, gets it delivered, then learns his panel is full and a service upgrade is needed before anything can be plugged in. That’s a multi-week delay and an unbudgeted expense sitting on top of a crate in the driveway. Ten minutes with a flashlight and a tape measure prevents it. We’d rather spend that ten minutes with you on the phone before you order than solve it after. And if your panel genuinely can’t support the lift, say so early — sometimes the right answer is a smaller-motor unit or a portable option instead of a full electrical overhaul.
Getting It Installed and Keeping It Running
We install throughout Iowa and into western Illinois, and a home lift install is typically a one-day job once the concrete and electrical are ready. We set the columns, plumb them, anchor to spec with the correct torque, plumb and bleed the hydraulics, set the overhead or floorplate cable routing, cycle-test the locks under load, and walk you through operation and the daily and monthly checks. That last part matters — a lift you understand is a lift you’ll maintain.
After that, the electrical side rarely gives trouble if it was done right. What does wear are cables, lock assemblies, cylinder seals, and hydraulic fluid that nobody has looked at in eight years.
