Most first-time buyers planning an autolift garage call us knowing the capacity they want and almost nothing about arm geometry — and that’s fine, because arm geometry is the part nobody explains well online. A homeowner along the Iowa-Illinois corridor emailed us a few springs ago describing exactly the situation we hear weekly: a new 30×40 pole building, concrete floor, twelve-foot sidewalls, a daily driver that needs oil changes and brake work, and a desire to park one car up top and maybe another underneath. He’d been reading forum threads about symmetric versus asymmetric two-posts and had come away more confused than when he started. Here’s the plain version we gave him, and the questions we ask before recommending either one.

What symmetric and asymmetric actually mean
Forget the marketing language for a second and picture the lift from above. On a symmetric two-post, the two columns face each other directly, and all four arms are the same length. The vehicle sits centered between the columns, with roughly half its weight forward of the posts and half behind. That’s a true 50/50 load split. On an asymmetric lift, the columns are rotated — usually about 30 degrees — and the front arms are shorter than the rear arms. The vehicle sits further back in the lift, closer to a 30/70 split, which puts the door openings behind the columns.
That rotation is the entire point. When the posts are turned and the car sits back, you can open the driver’s door without smacking it into a steel column. For anyone who plans to get in and out of the vehicle while it’s on the ground — pulling it into position, grabbing something off the seat, popping the hood latch — that clearance is a daily quality-of-life difference. Symmetric lifts, on the other hand, put more of the vehicle’s mass between the posts, which suits long or heavy vehicles better and generally gives a more balanced load path. Neither is universally correct. The right answer depends on what you drive and what you’ll do with the space. In a first autolift garage build, that’s the fork in the road.
Which one fits daily maintenance work
For general daily maintenance on passenger cars, crossovers, and half-ton pickups — oil, brakes, exhaust, suspension, fluid service — asymmetric is what we recommend most often to home buyers. The reason is simple: you’ll be in and out of the door constantly. Setting the parking brake, checking a warning light, reaching for the hood release. On a symmetric setup with a mid-size sedan, the B-pillar lands right at the column, and after the fourth time you catch your door edge you’ll wish you’d bought the other one.
Asymmetric also tends to give slightly better under-hood and under-dash access because more of the front of the car hangs out past the posts. If you do a lot of engine bay work with the vehicle in the air — and most home shops do — that matters. The tradeoff is that the rear arms carry more load and reach further, so pad placement discipline becomes more important. You have to know your vehicle’s lift points and use them, every time. We walk every install customer through that and hand them a laminated card for their specific vehicles. If you’re mostly working long-bed trucks, vans, or classic full-size cars, the calculus flips and symmetric becomes the better tool. The storage question changes the answer entirely
Here’s where a lot of first-time buyers get pointed the wrong direction. The buyer in that email wanted to store one car up and park another underneath. That’s a legitimate goal, and a two-post can do it — but it’s not what a two-post is designed for, and it’s not what we’d recommend for someone whose primary use is parking rather than wrenching.
A two-post holds a vehicle by four contact pads at the frame or pinch welds. That’s ideal for service, where you want the wheels hanging free and full underbody access. It’s less ideal for long-term storage, because the load sits on four small points for months and because getting the car on and off requires careful pad positioning every single time. A four-post lift holds the vehicle by its own tires on drive-on runways. You pull up, raise it, and walk away. No pad placement, no pinch-weld worry, and the suspension stays loaded like it does in a parking spot. For a 30×40 building with twelve-foot sidewalls and a stated goal of storing a car with another underneath, a four-post is usually the right call — and a mid-rise scissor as a second piece of equipment covers quick brake and tire work. Ceiling height, sidewalls, and what twelve feet really buys you
Twelve-foot sidewalls in a pole building sound generous, and they are — but the number that matters is the clear height at the lift location, measured to the lowest obstruction. Trusses, purlins, lights, garage door tracks, and radiant tube heaters all eat into it. We’ve measured buildings advertised at twelve feet that had 10’8″ of usable clearance under a truss chord right where the customer wanted the columns.
For a clearfloor two-post — the style with the overhead crossbeam carrying the hydraulic hose and equalization cables — you generally want 12 feet or more, because the beam sits above the columns. With true twelve-foot walls and clean trusses you’re usually fine, but verify before you order. A baseplate two-post routes everything through a plate at floor level instead, which lets it work in buildings as low as roughly 10 to 11 feet; the tradeoff is a small ramp of steel across the floor that you drive over. Four-post lifts need enough height to raise a car above another car — figure the height of the vehicle underneath plus runway thickness plus the height of the stored car, and compare to your clear dimension. In a twelve-foot building, storing a sedan over a sedan works comfortably; storing an SUV over a pickup usually does not. Measure your actual clearance, at the actual spot, before anything ships to your autolift garage.
Concrete: the one thing you cannot fix later cheaply
New pole buildings in the Iowa-Illinois corridor typically get a 4-inch slab unless the owner specifically asked for more. Four inches at 3,000 PSI will support most 9,000 to 10,000 lb home two-post lifts, and most manufacturers publish exactly that minimum. But the details matter: 3,000 PSI minimum, fully cured — 28 days is the standard — and no cracks, control joints, or slab edges within the anchor pattern. Anchors need a certain distance from any free edge, and a column bolted six inches from a saw-cut joint is a column with compromised holding power.
If you’re still in the planning phase, this is the single best money you’ll ever spend: tell your concrete contractor where the lift is going and have them pour a thickened pad, 6 to 8 inches with rebar, in that footprint. It costs very little as part of an existing pour and it removes every future limitation, including the option to upgrade to heavier equipment down the road. If the slab is already down and you’re unsure what you have, drill a test hole or core it. We’d rather find out with a masonry bit than with a loaded vehicle. Also confirm whether the floor has in-floor heat before anybody drills — we scan for tubing on every install where it’s a possibility, and hitting a PEX line is a bad day for everyone involved.
Budget tiers and what you get at each one
For a home shop, the equipment side generally sorts into three tiers. Entry-level 9,000 lb two-posts from Atlas land in the low four figures and cover a homeowner doing oil, brakes, and suspension on cars and light trucks. Mid-tier 10,000 to 12,000 lb BendPak units sit in the mid four figures and bring heavier steel, better arm assemblies, ALI certification on most models, and a longer warranty. Commercial-grade Rotary and Challenger equipment runs higher and is genuinely overkill for a two-car home shop — but it’s what we’d put in if you’re planning to do side work or eventually go commercial.
Four-post storage lifts overlap that middle tier and often come with caster kits so you can reposition the lift when the building needs to be a woodshop for a weekend. Then add the real-world extras: freight, a forklift or tractor with forks to offload, anchors, an electrician for a dedicated 220V circuit with a disconnect, and installation if you don’t want to spend a Saturday with a rented hammer drill. We quote all of it as one number so nothing surprises you. Our advice to every first-time buyer is the same — buy one tier above what you think you need on capacity, because the arms and pads are what limit you in practice, and nobody has ever regretted extra margin. Circling back to the buyer with the 30×40 building: what we ultimately laid out for him was a 7,000 to 9,000 lb-class four-post for the storage side of the goal, positioned along the long wall with room to walk both sides, plus the option to add a mid-rise scissor later for quick brake and tire jobs. He wanted to store a car and park under it, and a four-post does that without any pad-placement ritual. Had his priority been the wrench work instead, we’d have gone asymmetric two-post, 10,000 lb, clearfloor, positioned with the doors clear of the posts.
That’s the honest process. We ask what you drive, what you’ll actually do in the bay, what your clear ceiling height is at the exact lift location, and what’s under your concrete. From there the symmetric-versus-asymmetric question mostly answers itself, and the capacity follows.
