Planning an autolift garage build on the Iowa-Nebraska border usually starts the same way: somebody finally gets tired of crawling under a truck on ramps in January, and they decide this is the year. We take those calls constantly from the western half of the state — Council Bluffs, Missouri Valley, Glenwood, and across the river. Most of the questions are about capacity and price, which are the easy parts. The questions that actually determine whether you’re happy in five years are about arm restraints, safety-cam engagement, slab thickness, and column spacing. This article is the pre-purchase checklist we walk through on the phone, written down so you can work through it before you spend a dollar. Start With the Slab, Not the Lift
The single most common mistake we see in a home autolift garage is picking equipment first and discovering the concrete afterward. A two-post lift concentrates the entire weight of the vehicle plus the structure into eight anchor bolts. That load has to go somewhere, and where it goes is the slab. Most residential pole-building pours in western Iowa come in at four inches of 3,000 PSI concrete, sometimes with fiber mesh, sometimes with nothing. Most two-post manufacturers want a minimum of four inches of 3,000 PSI, and a lot of them want more than that for anything above 10,000 lb capacity.
Before you order anything, find out three things: the thickness, the strength, and the age. Thickness you can check by drilling a test hole in an inconspicuous corner or by measuring at a doorway edge. Strength you get from the contractor’s ticket if you still have it, or you assume 3,000 PSI and hope. Age matters because green concrete under thirty days will not hold an anchor properly. If your slab is thin, that isn’t the end of the project — we cut and pour footing pads under each column all the time, typically two feet square by a foot deep, tied into the existing slab. It adds a day and some cost, but it’s cheaper than pulling anchors out of a cracked floor two years in.
Capacity Math for Oil Changes and Fluid Service
If your weekend work is oil changes, transmission drains, coolant flushes, and brake fluid, you do not need a 15,000 lb lift. But you probably need more than you think. We had a customer near the river who wanted to service a half-ton pickup and figured 7,000 lb was plenty because the truck weighed 5,400. Then he bought a three-quarter-ton diesel and was suddenly over capacity with a full fuel tank and a topper.
Our general rule for a home autolift garage: take the heaviest vehicle you realistically expect to own in the next decade, add 25 percent, and round up to the next standard capacity. For most people servicing passenger cars and light trucks, that lands on a 10,000 lb two-post. The price difference between 9,000 and 10,000 lb is small enough that the extra headroom is basically free insurance. Also pay attention to lifting points, not just gross weight. A unibody crossover with a low rocker pinch weld needs different adapters than a body-on-frame truck. Ask what pad and adapter set comes standard and what the tall-adapter options cost. Fluid service specifically means you’ll be under the vehicle with drain pans and a full range of motion, so plan for rise height too — a lift that only goes to 69 inches will have you stooping for the entire oil change.
Arm Restraints: How They Actually Work
Arm restraints are the mechanism that keeps a lift arm from swinging out from under a vehicle once the load comes off the ground. On most modern two-post designs, it’s a gear-and-pawl setup at the arm pivot: as the carriage rises off the floor, spring pressure or a mechanical linkage engages a toothed gear so the arm can no longer rotate. Lower the lift back down and the restraint releases so you can swing arms out of the way.
Here’s what matters for a checklist. First, verify the lift you’re buying has automatic arm restraints on all four arms, not manual pins. Automatic is the industry standard now and it’s what ALI certification expects. Second, ask whether the restraint gears are serviceable — some designs let you replace a worn gear and pawl for the cost of a small parts order, others require the whole arm assembly. Third, once installed, test them. Raise the lift a few inches with nothing on it and try to swing each arm by hand. It should lock solid. We’ve been called to shops where somebody had been working under a lift for a year with two restraints that never engaged because the springs were installed backward at assembly. That is exactly the kind of thing a professional install catches and a driveway install does not. Worn restraint gears are also one of the more common parts orders we fill for older equipment.
Safety-Cam Engagement and the Sound You Want to Hear
Every two-post lift has a mechanical lock ladder inside each column with a spring-loaded safety cam that drops into the next notch as the carriage rises. You should hear it click every eight to twelve inches on the way up. When you reach working height, you lower the lift an inch or two so the carriages rest on the locks, not on hydraulic pressure. That is what actually holds the vehicle. The hydraulics only lift it.
In practice, safety-cam problems show up in three ways. The cam doesn’t engage at all, usually because the pull cable that releases the locks is over-tightened and holding the cams open. The cams engage on one column but not the other, which means the equalization is off and you’ve got an uneven set. Or the cam engages but doesn’t seat because the lock ladder has debris in it — in a farm shop near the border we found bean dust packed into the ladder slots thick enough to block the pawl. Any of these is fixable in an afternoon with the right parts. What you should never do is decide the clicking is annoying and adjust the release cable to quiet it down. If your locks are not clicking, stop using the lift and call somebody. We stock cam kits, springs, and release cables for essentially every major brand and can usually get them out same week.
Overhead vs. Floorplate in a Pole Building
Most western Iowa shops we work in are pole buildings with twelve- to sixteen-foot sidewalls and open trusses. That geometry drives the overhead-versus-floorplate decision more than anything else. An overhead two-post runs the equalization cables and hoses through a crossbar at the top of the columns. It keeps the floor completely clear, which is great for rolling toolboxes and creepers, but it sets a hard height limit on what you can put on the lift. A floorplate model runs everything through a channel across the floor, which gives you unlimited overhead clearance but leaves a low ridge you’ll roll a jack over.
For a hobbyist autolift garage doing fluid service on cars and pickups, overhead is usually the better call. You want twelve feet of clear height minimum — that gets a full-size truck up to a comfortable working height with the shutoff bar above it. If your sidewalls are shorter, or if you’ve got a lift-height concern from trusses or lighting, floorplate solves it. One thing people forget: in a pole building, the columns bolt to the slab but the shutoff bar and overhead assembly need clearance from purlins and any hanging lights or gas heaters. Measure to the lowest obstruction, not to the peak. We’ve had to relocate more than one unit heater during an install because nobody measured before ordering.
Power, Air, and What the Electrician Needs to Know
The power supply question comes up late in most projects and it shouldn’t. A typical two-post power unit is a 220V single-phase motor drawing somewhere around 20 to 25 amps at startup, and it wants a dedicated 30-amp circuit with its own disconnect within sight of the lift. Some units ship configured for 110V, which works but runs slower and puts more strain on the motor. If you’re already running power to a new shop, spend the extra on 220 and be done with it.
Air matters too, though less than people expect. Most two-post lifts use a small air line to release the safety locks, drawing off your shop compressor at low pressure. If you don’t have air, some models offer a manual cable release instead — worth asking about if your autolift garage is a detached building without a compressor. While you’re planning conduit, think about lighting placement as well. The worst-lit shops we walk into have a single row of fixtures directly above the lift, which means the vehicle blocks all of it once it’s in the air. Run your lights to the sides of the bay, or add fixtures on the walls at about eight feet, and you’ll actually be able to see the drain plug. The Final Pre-Purchase Checklist
Here’s the condensed version we’d hand you before you buy. Confirm slab thickness, strength, and cure time, and budget for footing pads if any of those come up short. Pick capacity based on your heaviest future vehicle plus 25 percent. Verify the lift carries ALI Gold Label certification — that means an independent lab validated the design, the load testing, and the manual, and it’s the single fastest way to filter out junk. Confirm automatic arm restraints on all four arms and ask whether the gears are individually serviceable. Confirm the safety-cam design and get a copy of the maintenance schedule.
Then handle the boring logistics. Measure your ceiling to the lowest obstruction, not the peak. Decide overhead versus floorplate based on that number. Have an electrician confirm you can add a dedicated 220V 30-amp circuit. Figure out how the lift gets from the truck into the building — a two-post ships on a pallet weighing well over a thousand pounds and most residential deliveries are curbside only. And ask whoever’s selling it whether they’ll be around in three years when you need a cable or a cylinder seal.
