Why a body shop foreman thinks about resale before the first bolt
A foreman we worked with at a collision shop in eastern Iowa put it well: he does not buy equipment, he leases it from the future. Every asset in that building is either going to earn its keep and then hand back a chunk of its cost when the shop upgrades, or it is going to sit in a corner while somebody argues about who is paying to haul it off. Lifts fall firmly in the first category when you buy right. A well-maintained two-post from a top-tier manufacturer routinely trades hands for a meaningful share of its original cost a decade later, and the buyers are real — independent techs, farm shops, fleet garages, and guys building out a home setup in a pole barn.
What kills resale is not age. It is documentation and parts availability. When a used lift has no ALI certification label, no serial plate, and no manufacturer still answering the phone for arms and carriages, the value collapses to whatever the steel weighs. That is the single most useful thing we can tell anyone planning an autolift garage: buy the brand whose parts you can still order in 2040. Suspension and shock work sets the clearance requirements
If your bays are doing suspension and shock replacement, the lift configuration matters more than the badge on the column. Strut work means you need the vehicle high enough that a tech can stand upright under the fender with a spring compressor, and you need arms that swing clear so a control arm can drop without fouling a pad. Asymmetric two-post lifts with three-stage front arms handle this well because the door swing lets a tech get into the cabin to break the upper strut nut without contorting around a column.
We also push shops toward 10,000 or 12,000 lb capacity even when the vehicle mix is light. Half-ton trucks with plow prep packages and three-quarter-ton crew cabs come through collision shops constantly, and a 9,000 lb lift running near its ceiling every day wears cables and sheaves faster. Overhead versus floorplate is the other decision. Overhead is cleaner for suspension work — no bar to trip on when you are wrestling a rear axle assembly — but you need the ceiling height, and a lot of Quad Cities buildings from the sixties and seventies are tighter than people remember. Measure to the lowest obstruction, not the peak. In a properly planned autolift garage, the clearance survey happens before the purchase order, not after the freight truck shows up.
Concrete: the one thing you cannot fix later
Every conversation about an autolift garage eventually lands on the slab, and it should. Most two-post manufacturers want a minimum of four inches of 3,000 PSI concrete, and plenty want more for higher-capacity units. In older Quad Cities buildings we have cored slabs that turned out to be three and a quarter inches over rubble fill, which is not something you find out gracefully after the anchors are set. We core test before installation on any building where the pour history is unknown, and it costs a fraction of what a failed anchor pullout costs.
Slab age matters too. New concrete needs 28 days to cure before anchoring, and we have had to tell more than one contractor that no, we are not setting columns on a two-week-old pour just because the schedule says so. If your slab does not make spec, the fix is a cutout and a reinforced pad — typically a section around each column poured to depth and tied in. It is disruptive and it is not cheap, but it is permanent, and it makes the building itself more valuable to the next tenant or owner. Documented, engineered concrete under a lift is a selling point when the property changes hands. Undersized concrete is a liability that shows up on an inspection report.
Which brands actually hold their money
We stay out of brand wars, but the used market has already voted. Rotary and Challenger two-post lifts hold value in the commercial segment because the parts supply is deep, the ALI certification is real, and any competent installer knows how to service them. When a Quad Cities shop closes and the auctioneer lists a Rotary SPO12 in decent shape, it draws bidders. Off-brand imports with no serial traceability draw a forklift and a scrap ticket.
For home and light-duty setups, BendPak and Atlas are the two we recommend, and both carry a respectable secondary market — Atlas at a friendlier entry point, BendPak with the stronger name recognition when it comes time to sell. On the heavy side, when a shop needs 30,000 lb or more, Challenger’s PKS platform is what we spec. Whatever tier you land in, the pattern holds: buy an ALI-certified lift from a manufacturer with a parts pipeline, keep the paperwork in a folder, and get it inspected annually. Three habits, and your resale number roughly doubles compared to the same equipment with no records. What annual inspections do to trade-in value
Insurers and OEM certification programs increasingly want to see documented lift inspections, and that paperwork does double duty. A stack of annual inspection reports tells a buyer that the cables were checked, the locks were exercised, the arm restraints engage, and the anchors were torqued. That is the difference between a lift that appraises as working equipment and one that appraises as a project.

Four-post, scissor, and mobile column alternatives
Two-post is the default for collision and suspension work, but it is not always the right answer, and the resale math shifts by category. Four-post lifts sell fast on the used market because storage buyers want them — a homeowner stacking two cars in a pole building is a completely different buyer pool than a body shop, and that second market keeps four-post values firm. If part of your plan is storing a vehicle above and parking another underneath, four-post is the honest answer. We hear that request constantly from guys putting up 30×40 pole buildings with twelve-foot sidewalls, and a four-post with a rolling jack covers both storage and light service.
Mid-rise scissor lifts have a narrower resale audience, but they earn their spot in tire and brake-heavy bays where full height is not needed and floor space is precious. Mobile column lifts are the specialty item — expensive, incredibly capable on heavy trucks and buses, and they hold value well because so few used sets come available. For most Quad Cities body shops, the practical mix is a pair of two-posts and one four-post for alignment and long-term jobs. Getting your Quad Cities install done right
Installation is where resale value is either created or destroyed.
