A guy building a 30×40 pole barn outside a small town in southern Minnesota emailed us last spring asking what to put in it. He wanted to do his own maintenance, dabble in alignment work on a couple of project cars, store one vehicle up high and park another underneath, and he had 12-foot sidewalls and a fresh concrete floor. That’s the classic autolift garage question, and the answer hinges on two details most buyers never ask about until after the truck shows up: how the arm restraints work and how positively the safety cams engage. Everything else — capacity, width, finish color — is easier to get right. Here’s the checklist we walk hobbyists through before they spend the money.

Start with what you’re doing under the car, not the capacity number

Almost everyone leads with weight. Seven thousand pounds, ten thousand, whatever the heaviest thing in the driveway is. Capacity matters, but for a home shop it’s rarely the deciding factor — a 10,000 lb two-post handles anything a hobbyist owns, including a three-quarter-ton pickup, with room to spare. What actually decides the model is the work. If you’re doing brakes, exhaust, oil, and transmission work, a two-post with good arm geometry is the right tool because the wheels hang free and nothing blocks the underside. If you want to store a car overhead and park under it, a four-post is the answer. If you want to do both, you’re either buying two lifts or accepting a compromise.

Alignment work changes the math again. Real alignment needs the wheels loaded and the platform dead flat and level, which points toward a four-post with slip plates and turn plates, or a scissor alignment lift. You can do toe-and-camber checks on a two-post with the car on rolling jack pads, but it’s fussy and the repeatability isn’t great. For the southern Minnesota building we were looking at, the honest recommendation was a four-post as the primary lift — storage plus alignment capability plus parking underneath — with a mid-rise scissor added later for quick wheel-off work. That’s a common two-stage plan for an autolift garage where the budget arrives in pieces rather than all at once.

Arm restraints: the single most overlooked spec

On a two-post lift, the arms swing. Arm restraints are what keep them from swinging while a vehicle is in the air, and there are meaningfully different designs on the market. The good ones use a spring-loaded gear-and-pawl mechanism at the arm pivot that engages automatically the moment the carriage lifts off its lowest position — you don’t have to remember anything, and the arm locks into gear teeth so it can only move in defined increments. Cheaper designs use a pin-and-hole arrangement or a friction wedge. Pins work if you remember to set them; friction is not a restraint, it’s a suggestion.

Why does this matter more in a home shop than a commercial one? Because a hobbyist works alone, often at night, and often on cars that fight back — a rusty 30-year-old truck where the exhaust hanger needs a five-foot bar and real body weight. That’s exactly the load case that walks an unrestrained arm out from under a pinch weld. When we spec a two-post for an autolift garage, gear-type automatic arm restraints are non-negotiable, and I check them physically at install: raise the lift a few inches empty, then try to swing each arm by hand. It should refuse. If it moves smoothly, something’s wrong. Also check that the restraint gears aren’t packed with grease and grit, which is the number one reason a working restraint stops working two years in.

Safety cams and locks: listen for the sound

Every certified lift has a mechanical locking system that holds the load if hydraulic pressure is lost. On a two-post it’s usually a spring-loaded latch dropping into ladder slots on the column. On a four-post it’s a cam or dog engaging ladder positions in each post. The critical question isn’t whether the lift has locks — they all claim to — it’s whether they engage crisply and audibly at every position, and whether they release together.

Here’s the test I run on every install, and it’s the same test you should run monthly. Raise the lift empty in steps and listen. You should hear a clear, sharp click from each column at each lock position, and the clicks should be close to simultaneous. Vague, mushy, or missing clicks mean a weak latch spring, a bent latch, or a lock cable that’s out of adjustment. Then lower the lift onto the locks and get under it — the carriages should be sitting on steel, not held by fluid. If you can hear the pump straining or see the carriage creep down after the pump stops, the lift is resting on hydraulics, not on locks, and that’s the condition where people get hurt. For a four-post used as storage, this matters even more: a car sitting on a lift for eight months at a time is resting on those cams the entire time, and a lock that only half-engages will eventually let go. Before you buy anything for an autolift garage, ask the seller how the lock release works and whether it’s mechanical, pneumatic, or electric.

The building checklist: slab, ceiling, and power

The pole barn in southern Minnesota had 12-foot sidewalls, which is enough for most two-post lifts to reach full height with a sedan and enough for a four-post storage lift to stack two low cars. It is not enough for a full-rise two-post with a tall pickup on it — figure the lift’s overall height plus vehicle height plus a few inches, and note that pole buildings often have trusses and purlins hanging below the nominal sidewall number. Measure to the lowest obstruction, not to the peak.

Slab is where most home projects go sideways. Two-post lifts need a specified minimum thickness and concrete strength under each column footprint — commonly four inches of 3,000 psi minimum for lighter units, more for higher capacities, and always confirm against the manufacturer’s spec for the exact model. Fresh concrete needs full cure time before anchors go in. If your slab is thinner than spec, the fix is cutting out and pouring footing pads, which is a day of work but far cheaper than a column pulling anchors with a car up. Four-post lifts spread load across four points and are more forgiving of a marginal slab, which is another reason they’re popular in an autolift garage built on an unknown pour. Power is simpler: most home units run 220V single phase on a dedicated 20 or 30 amp circuit, and you want that outlet located on the correct side before install day, not after. Alignment-specific extras worth paying for up front

If alignment is on your list — even occasional hobby-level work — order the alignment features with the lift instead of retrofitting. On a four-post that means rear slip plates and front turn-plate pockets built into the runways, plus the option of air- or hydraulic-operated rolling jacks so you can get wheels off without moving the car. Retrofitting slip plates into plain runways is either impossible or ugly, and turn plates sitting loose on a flat runway change your ride height reference.

Level is the other thing to buy correctly. Alignment work needs the runways within a tight tolerance across their length and side to side, which means shimming the posts at install with real steel shims and checking with a laser or a good long level rather than eyeballing it. We spend extra time on leveling for any four-post that’s going to see alignment duty, and we document the readings. Also think about the alignment equipment itself: a hobbyist can get useful results with a quality string setup, camber gauges, and toe plates, and that’s what I’d start with before spending real money on a machine. If you eventually want a proper aligner, having the lift already level and equipped means it’s a plug-in upgrade rather than a rebuild. Installation, inspection, and what happens after year one

Home buyers often plan to install it themselves, and some do fine. What I’d tell you honestly: the lifting and standing of columns is manageable with a couple of friends and an engine hoist or a skid loader, but anchor drilling, plumb, level, cable tensioning, bleeding, and lock synchronization are where DIY installs go wrong. We’ve been called out to fix more than a few self-installed lifts where the columns were a half-inch out of plumb and the carriages bound at half height. If you do install it yourself, at minimum have someone who knows lifts check plumb, anchor torque, lock timing, and arm restraint function before you put a car on it.

After that, maintenance is light but not optional. Monthly: cycle empty, listen for lock clicks at every position, check for fluid on the floor, look at cable ends for broken strands, check arm restraint engagement. Annually: check anchor torque, inspect cables end to end, grease pivots and slide blocks, check fluid level and condition, and inspect the columns where they meet the slab for cracked concrete. Write it down — even at home, a maintenance log tells you whether something is changing over time. Certified annual inspection isn’t legally required in most home settings the way it is in commercial shops, but if you have friends and family working under that car, the honest standard is the same.
