He’d already added fluid twice, wiped the floor twice, and had inspections booked solid for the week. That slow drop is one of the clearest hydraulic warnings a lift gives you, and it almost always traces back to cylinder seals, a leaking check valve, or a line fitting nobody has touched in a decade. Rule One: Nothing Goes Under a Lift You Don’t Trust
Before any diagnosis, get the vehicle off the lift and get the lift down to the floor. A hydraulic leak means the only thing holding that load could be fluid pressure, and fluid pressure is exactly what you’ve lost confidence in. Lower it, tag it out, and pull the disconnect. If you can’t lower it because the car is already up and drifting, raise it slightly to the next mechanical lock position, let the locks take the load, and then unload the vehicle from a locked height. Mechanical locks are the safety system. Hydraulics are the lifting system. Never confuse the two.
We say this bluntly because we’ve seen the alternative. A shop we visited in the region had a tech chase a weeping cylinder gland with the lift loaded and a jack stand under a rocker panel — that’s not a backup, that’s a hope. Any time an autolift garage has a lift with a suspected hydraulic fault, that bay comes out of service until it’s proven. Write it on the column with a grease pencil so the next guy on shift doesn’t wander in and pull it up. One lost day of inspection throughput is nothing compared to what a dropped vehicle costs you in people, insurance, and reputation.
Reading the Leak: Where the Fluid Is Actually Coming From
Fluid on the floor tells you less than you think. Clean the whole area, run the lift empty through two full cycles, and then look with a flashlight in four specific places. First, the cylinder rod where it exits the gland nut — wetness there is a rod seal or wiper. Second, the base of the cylinder and the port fitting — that’s usually a fitting, an O-ring, or a hairline crack. Third, every hose end and the power unit’s manifold. Fourth, the reservoir and filler cap, because overfilling makes a mess that looks exactly like a real leak.
Now separate external leaks from internal ones. External leaks put fluid on the floor. An internal leak — worn piston seals letting fluid bypass inside the cylinder — puts nothing on the floor but lets the lift sink under load while the reservoir stays full. That’s the classic “drifts down with a car on it, dry underneath” symptom, and it’s a cylinder rebuild or replacement, not a hose. Same goes for a load-holding check valve stuck open by debris. In a two-post with two cylinders and equalizer cables, a single failing cylinder can also show up as one side lagging on the way up. Note which side, because it tells you which unit to pull.
Seal Kits Versus Full Cylinder Replacement
Once you know a cylinder is the culprit, you have two paths. A seal kit — rod seal, wiper, piston seal, O-rings, and often a backup ring — is the economical fix and works well when the barrel bore and the chrome on the rod are both clean. Rebuilding on the bench is genuinely doable for a competent tech with the right spanner and a clean workspace. A full replacement cylinder costs more but takes an hour instead of half a day and eliminates the risk of reassembling a marginal barrel.
Our rule of thumb: if the rod is pitted, scored, or the chrome is flaking, replace the cylinder. New seals will get shredded by a bad rod inside a few months. If the barrel has scoring you can catch a fingernail on, replace it. If everything is smooth and you’re just chasing a hardened, weeping rod seal on an eight-year-old lift, the kit is the right call. Getting the Right Kit for Your Autolift Garage Lift
Hydraulic cylinders are not generic, and this is where mail-order goes wrong. What we need to identify the correct kit is the lift manufacturer, the model number, the serial number, and the year if you have it. Serial number matters enormously because manufacturers change cylinder suppliers mid-production run — two Rotary two-posts of the same model number five years apart can take different seals. If the data plate is painted over or gone, we can work from measurements: cylinder bore, rod diameter, stroke length, overall retracted length, port size and thread type, and mounting style.
Older and orphan lifts are common in this part of the country. Plenty of shops in southern Minnesota are still running twenty-five-year-old two-posts that outlived the company that built them, and we’ve matched seal kits for those by dimension more times than we can count. Photograph the removed cylinder next to a tape measure, note the port thread, and send it over. One more thing: buy the whole kit, not just the leaking seal. Every seal in that cylinder has the same hours and the same heat history, and reassembling with one new part and four tired ones means doing the job twice. Doing the Rebuild Without Contaminating the System
Cleanliness is the whole job. Before you crack anything open, wipe down the exterior of the cylinder and the surrounding column so grit doesn’t fall into the bore. Have a drain pan and rags ready — a two-post cylinder holds real volume. Support the carriage on its mechanical locks or with blocking before you disconnect anything, and relieve pressure fully. Then remove the hose, cap the line so the system doesn’t drink dirt, and pull the cylinder to a bench. Rebuilding in place, upside down, in a column is how seals get nicked.
On the bench, index everything as it comes apart, hone nothing aggressively, and inspect the bore with a light. Install new seals with clean hydraulic fluid as lube — never grease, never petroleum jelly — and go slow over the piston lands so you don’t roll or cut a lip. Torque the gland to spec. When it’s back in, refill with the fluid the manufacturer specifies, cycle the lift empty six or eight times full travel to purge air, and check level again. Then do a load test at a fraction of rated capacity, hold it, and watch for drift. Any autolift garage doing this work should log the date, the parts used, and the load test result.
Preventive Habits That Save Cylinders
Most cylinder failures we see are avoidable. Number one cause: dirty or wrong fluid. Hydraulic fluid picks up moisture and metal over years, and abrasive fluid grinds seals and rods. Change it on the manufacturer’s interval — for a busy inspection bay that may mean every couple of years, not every decade — and keep the reservoir filled to the mark, not to the top. Number two: rod damage from the outside. A rod that’s exposed to overspray, road salt dripping off winter vehicles, or grinder sparks will pit, and pitting kills seals. Wipe rods down and keep boots or covers intact.
Number three: running the lift past its limits. Overloading, off-center loads, and slamming into the top of travel all spike pressure and stress seals and the load-holding valve. Train your techs to load center and stop short of the hard stop. Finally, do a real ALI-standard annual inspection with documentation. Cables, locks, arm restraints, anchors, and hydraulics all get looked at, and the inspector catches the weeping gland while it’s a seal kit rather than a cylinder. When to Call Us Instead of Ordering Parts
