A collector in southern Minnesota called us in the spring of last year to install an autolift garage in a new shop building on his property. He’d bought a second-generation Camaro that needed a bare-metal restoration, plus three other cars he wanted to store overhead. The build came together over a winter and the lift went in during May. This is the first-year ownership story, from install through the first full restoration project, with honest notes on what worked and what we’d change if we did it again. The Building That Made the Lift Choice
The collector’s building was purpose-built: 40 by 60 feet, 14-foot side walls, six-inch slab poured to 4,500 psi, and a set of clerestory windows for daylight. That’s the ideal envelope for almost any autolift garage we’d recommend. The only real constraint was ceiling height under the peak — 18 feet at the ridge — which we used to size a clear-floor two-post that would let the collector store vehicles overhead without runway interference.
For the primary lift we specced a Rotary SPOA10 wide asymmetric at 10,000 pounds, because the collector’s inventory ran classic muscle cars and modern trucks up to a half-ton diesel. That capacity handled everything he’d realistically put on it, with margin for a rare exotic he sometimes borrowed from a friend. For the secondary lift — used only for storage — we specced a Rotary SM14 four-post, giving him drive-on-and-lock overhead parking for his three non-project cars. Install Week and What Actually Happened
Install week ran two days for the two-post, another day for the four-post. The freight arrived on a Tuesday, we bolted the two-post Wednesday and Thursday, and we set the four-post on Friday. Both lifts cycled clean on their first tests. The collector was on the lift with his first project car by the following Monday.
What didn’t go perfectly: the four-post’s freight had a damaged cross-tie in transit — the pallet slid during offloading and one of the runways got a small dent. We sourced a replacement runway from Rotary within four days and finished the four-post install the following week. The collector had already started the Camaro on the two-post, so the delay didn’t stop his work. That’s a common situation with freight-damaged parts, and it’s why we always plan the primary lift install first when a customer is ordering two lifts. Get the working lift up, get the storage lift right, and don’t let a shipping incident hold up the whole project. That sequencing has saved multiple projects for our customers. During those cycles the lift performed flawlessly. Cables ran clean. Locks engaged cleanly at every position. The power unit didn’t complain even during heavy July heat. The one adjustment we made was during month three — the collector wanted to add an extended reach pad kit to accommodate a specific pinch-weld geometry on the Camaro’s frame rails. We shipped the kit inside a week and he installed it himself in an afternoon. That’s the pad kit customization most restoration shops eventually want, and stocking them is part of what we do at scale. The lift’s role in a restoration is invisible when it’s working right — the tech only notices the lift when it’s fighting them. The collector said, at the end of the Camaro’s first cruise night, that he’d forgotten the autolift garage was even there most days. That’s the highest compliment for a lift install.
Cable Inspection and the Southern Minnesota Cold
Southern Minnesota winters are hard on shop equipment. The collector’s building was heated but not insulated at commercial-shop levels. During January, the shop stabilized around 45 degrees with the heater running. The lift handled it, but we recommended a viscosity change on the hydraulic fluid from AW32 to AW46 for the winter — a simple drain-and-refill that took an hour and prevented the sluggish lift-cycle behavior we’ve seen in other cold-climate autolift garage installs.
Cable inspections happen annually on our recommended schedule. The collector’s first-year inspection came in April, and both lifts checked clean. Cables were straight, no visible fraying, no broken strands, all sheaves rotating smoothly. That’s the expected result at year one — cables are a long-term wear item and rarely show issues before year five. But we do the inspection every year anyway because catching a problem early is always cheaper than the alternative. For a collector who cycles the lift 60 times a year on projects and another 100 times for storage rotation, the annual inspection is more than enough. Race teams and dealerships need a shorter interval; a private collector doesn’t. That difference in duty cycle is one of the reasons we tune every service schedule to how the lift is actually used, not how the manual describes an average shop.
Brand History and the Rotary Parts Pipeline
Rotary Lift has been building automotive lifts since the 1920s and is arguably the most established name in the industry. That brand history matters practically because parts availability doesn’t dry up when the lift is 30 years old. We can source a cable for a 1985 Rotary two-post from the current Rotary parts network in a week. Try that with a discontinued import brand and the answer is almost always no.
For a collector building an autolift garage he expects to run for 30 or 40 years, brand history is more than marketing. It’s a promise that the lift will still be serviceable when the collector’s grandchildren are working on the same cars. Rotary’s product line has evolved over the decades but the fundamental engineering is compatible across generations — a modern Rotary cable will retrofit into an older Rotary lift in most cases, with minor adjustments. Challenger has a similar track record over roughly the same span. Bargain imports do not. That long-tail parts availability is what we sell alongside the lift itself, and it’s the reason the collector chose Rotary for both his primary and secondary lifts. The parts pipeline reality is what separates a real lift purchase from a gamble, and it’s the same reason our parts lookup gets used decade after decade.
What Would Change in a Second Autolift Garage Build
With hindsight from year one, the collector would change three things. First, he’d have run the compressed air line to the lift’s power unit location during the pour rather than after, saving a day of overhead conduit work. Second, he’d have specced a jack tray for the four-post from the beginning rather than skipping it — because he ended up wanting to service the stored vehicles occasionally, not just park them. Third, he’d have added a rolling toolbox purpose-built for the lift bay rather than sharing tools with the workbench.
None of those are lift-choice regrets. The Rotary SPOA10 and SM14 are the right lifts for this shop. The regrets are all about accessories and utility routing that we’d have flagged earlier if we’d been in the build conversation from day one. For future customers, we recommend involving us during the building design phase rather than after the floor is poured. That’s when the most cost-effective decisions get made.
