What a Two-Post Cylinder Actually Is

The main lifting cylinder on a two-post lift is a single-acting hydraulic cylinder that pushes a piston up through a bore under fluid pressure. The bore diameter on a ten-thousand-pound lift is typically two to two and a half inches. Stroke length matches the lift’s rise, usually 68 to 74 inches. The piston has a wear ring at the top to keep it centered in the bore, a primary seal at the head to keep fluid on the pressure side, and a rod seal at the top of the cylinder to keep fluid off the rod when it retracts.

Fluid enters at the bottom through a port that connects to the power unit. When the lift is raised, fluid pushes the piston up. When the lift is lowered, a solenoid valve opens and fluid returns to the reservoir under gravity. The pressure at full load on a ten-thousand-pound lift with a two-and-a-half inch bore is around a thousand psi. That is not extreme by hydraulic standards, but it is enough to reveal any weak seal. Symptoms of Cylinder Seal Failure

The first symptom of a cylinder seal starting to fail is a slow drop in the lift under load. The second symptom is fluid weeping around the rod when the lift is at full extension. That means the rod seal is passing fluid. The third symptom is chattering or jerky motion during lowering. This is often a sign that the rod is scored, which is a bigger problem than seals alone can fix. If the rod is smooth, a seal kit is all you need. If the rod is scored, you need a full cylinder replacement because the new seals will fail against a scored rod within weeks. We inspect the rod carefully with a flashlight and a magnifier during the diagnosis. The Rebuild Kit Contents

A typical two-post cylinder rebuild kit includes the piston primary seal, the piston wear ring, the rod seal, the rod wiper, and any static o-rings that seal the head to the tube. For a Rotary SPOA10 cylinder, the kit runs in the low hundreds from us. For a Challenger CL10, similar range. The seals themselves are standard hydraulic sizes when you know the dimensions. A two-inch bore uses a two-inch piston seal. The rod seal size depends on rod diameter, typically one and a quarter to one and three-quarters of an inch. Wear rings are cut from bronze or polymer stock. Wipers are a standard configuration. What matters is that the kit is matched to your specific cylinder model, because seal profiles and groove depths vary between manufacturers. A misfit seal will leak from day one. Autolift Garage Cylinder Rebuild Step by Step

The rebuild starts with the lift fully lowered and the fluid drained back to the reservoir. We disconnect the hydraulic hose at the bottom of the cylinder, catch the residual fluid, and lift the cylinder out of the column. On some lifts the cylinder is bolted to the top of the column; on others it hangs from a pin at the top and stands on the column base. Either way, removing the cylinder is a two-person job because it weighs sixty to eighty pounds and is awkward to handle.

Once out, the head of the cylinder unscrews from the tube. This is done in a bench vise with a spanner wrench. The piston and rod pull out together. Old seals are cut off with a pick and the piston is cleaned. The rod is inspected for scoring, pitting, or bends. New seals are lubricated with hydraulic fluid and installed onto the piston with a seal installer or by hand with care. The rod seal and wiper install into the head. The head threads back onto the tube with fresh o-ring, torqued to spec. Then the cylinder returns to the column, the hose reconnects, and fresh fluid fills the reservoir. Cycle the lift through full travel five or ten times to bleed air. A properly rebuilt cylinder returns to full working performance immediately, and you cannot tell the difference from a new cylinder.

When Rebuild Is Not the Answer

If the rod is scored, pitted, or bent, rebuild is not the answer. New seals against a damaged rod fail within weeks because the surface tears the seal on every stroke. Similarly, if the cylinder tube is scored on the inside from a broken wear ring, replacement is required. Diagnosis of internal tube scoring requires either an internal bore inspection tool or a rod pull-and-look. Most techs go by feel and by the age of the lift. A lift over twenty-five years old with a slow drop and a slightly gritty motion is a candidate for full cylinder replacement rather than rebuild.

Full cylinder replacement runs a few hundred to a thousand dollars depending on the lift model. That is a real number but is often cheaper over the next decade than repeatedly rebuilding a damaged rod. Fresh hydraulic fluid every two years, a clean reservoir screen, and a shop atmosphere that is not full of dust and grinder shavings will extend cylinder life significantly. We have seen cylinders in well-maintained shops go thirty years without a rebuild. We have also seen cylinders in neglected shops fail at ten. The difference is fluid care.

A brake shop generates a lot of brake dust, which is fine airborne particulate. If that dust settles into the reservoir opening during a fluid check, it can migrate into the cylinder over time and score the seal grooves. We recommend a magnetic dipstick or a covered fill port and disciplined fluid handling. This is not glamorous work. It is what makes a lift last across three generations of ownership.
