A row-crop farmer outside Waterloo called us in early spring to talk about adding an autolift garage bay to the west side of his existing 60×100 machine shed. He wanted to bring alignment work in-house for his own light trucks and to do the occasional side job for neighbors. His shed was tall enough for a semi tractor, so ceiling was not going to be his problem, but he had never bought a car lift before and he wanted to know what questions to actually ask. This piece is the checklist we walked him through, plus the questions we asked him. Any Waterloo-area buyer thinking about the same jump can use it as a starting point.

Why Overhead vs Baseplate Matters for Farm Shops
The overhead versus baseplate decision determines two things: how much sky you have above the vehicle, and whether you have a bar on your floor to step over. Overhead lifts route hydraulic hoses and equalizer cables through a crossbar at the top of the columns, keeping the floor between the columns completely clear. Baseplate lifts move that crossbar to the ground, giving you unlimited sky but adding a low bar you drive over.
For a farm shop, we usually lean overhead. Farmers move long objects: hay wagons on the way through the shop, sprayer booms, long extension ladders, cattle panels leaned against a wall. Any of those things can catch on a floor bar. But the overhead crossbar needs at least 12 to 13 feet of clear headroom to install properly, and the vehicle sitting on the lift needs to raise into that space without a collision. If your shed already stores a bin auger or a grain leg that lives 14 feet up, you might actually want baseplate to keep the ceiling clean. Every autolift garage in a farm setting deserves a walk-through before you order.
Alignment Work Requirements Most Buyers Miss
Alignment work is where lift selection gets specific. If you want to do serious rack-and-pinion alignments, you need turn plates at the front and slip plates at the rear, and you need a lift with a scissor-style rear rise or a four-post rack. A basic two-post does not give you the geometry alignment machines expect. You can eyeball camber on a two-post with a level, but that is not the same job.
The farmer we were talking with wanted alignment work, so we walked him through the options. A four-post alignment rack with rolling jacks and cutouts for turn plates runs more than a two-post, but it is the right tool for the job. Alternatively, if his alignment needs were casual, a two-post plus a good pair of drive-on ramps at the rear can get you the geometry with a portable alignment kit. He wanted casual, so we quoted a two-post and a portable Hunter-compatible measurement kit. If you want the real thing, budget for the rack from day one. Most Waterloo autolift garage buyers who add alignment as a second capability wish they had bought the rack first.
A Rural Waterloo Pre-Purchase Checklist
Before you buy any lift for a farm autolift garage, run this checklist. Measure your slab thickness with a core sample, not by asking the contractor who poured it a decade ago. Confirm your ceiling clearance from the concrete to the underside of the lowest overhead obstruction, whether that is a purlin, a truss chord, or a light fixture. Verify your side-wall clear distance is at least 12 feet, and preferably 14, to give the columns room to breathe. Check your power: a two-post typically wants 220V single phase, and if your shed has only 110V outlets you will need an electrician.
Then check your air. Most lifts do not require air, but the safety releases on many models are air-actuated for convenience. If you have no compressor, plan on a manual mechanical release. Finally, check your floor slope. Farm sheds sometimes have a drain slope of a quarter inch per foot. That is fine for a wash bay and terrible for a lift. Every autolift garage we install into a farm building starts with these five checks, and skipping any one of them turns install day into a fight.
Ceiling Height Realities in Pole Buildings
Pole buildings quote ceiling height in two different ways, and buyers get confused. The rated height is the side-wall stud height, measured from the top of the slab to the bottom of the truss heel. The actual clearance is usually less because trusses and purlins hang down. A 14-foot side wall building often has 13 feet of true clearance to the underside of the purlins in the center of the span.
That matters because overhead lifts want 12 to 13 feet of headroom for the crossbar plus the vehicle’s height at full rise. The math is: your vehicle height plus your desired working height under the vehicle plus about 4 inches for the crossbar itself. For a farmer with a full-size pickup at 78 inches and a desired 60-inch rise, that is 78 plus 60 plus 4, or 142 inches, which is just under 12 feet. He fit, comfortably. If you have a bigger vehicle or want more rise, you need a taller building or you go baseplate. Do the math before you sign anything for your autolift garage.
Concrete Slab Thickness and What We Test For
The single failure point we see most often on farm-shop lifts is the concrete. Pole buildings historically got 4-inch slabs at 3,000 psi, which is barely enough for a lift and only if the pour was clean. Older sheds sometimes have 3-inch slabs. A 3-inch slab is a hard no for a standard two-post lift; the anchor engagement is not sufficient and the pull-out load is too high for the concrete to take.
What we test for is thickness, compressive strength, and rebar or mesh presence. We pull a small core in one of the intended column locations. If the core is over 4 inches and the concrete looks solid with good aggregate, we proceed. If it is thin or crumbly, we recommend pouring a pad extension. A pad extension for two columns costs a few hundred dollars in concrete and rebar and saves the buyer thousands in a failed anchor callback later. Every autolift garage we install in a farm setting either has a pad extension planned or has a verified good slab. There is no middle option.
Rotary vs Challenger for Farm Shop Duty
Both Rotary and Challenger make excellent two-post lifts in the 10,000 to 15,000 pound range that fit farm-shop duty. Rotary’s SPO12 and SPOA10 are our workhorse recommendations, and Challenger’s CL12 and CL10 are the direct competitors. Both are ALI Gold Label certified, both are American-made in mainstream product lines, and both have parts pipelines we can tap same-week for anything a farmer would break.
The differences are subtle. Rotary tends to lift a couple of inches higher on comparable models, and Rotary’s dealer network is denser in the Midwest, which matters for parts. Challenger typically prices a few hundred dollars lower per lift and has a slightly smaller footprint on the CL10. For a farm shop that mostly services light trucks and the occasional Class 5 or Class 6 semi tractor, we usually recommend the Rotary SPO12. For a farm shop that only sees light trucks and sedans, the Challenger CL10 saves money without compromise. Either one is a good choice for a Waterloo-area autolift garage.
Delivery, Install, and What Iowa Freight Actually Costs
Freight to Waterloo runs about the same as freight anywhere in Iowa on our route, which is included in most of our quoted prices. What varies is install labor. A clean install on a good slab with a helper takes us about eight hours for a two-post. A messy install with anchor coring, a pad extension, or a compressor add takes twelve to sixteen. We quote in ranges rather than fixed numbers because farm sheds are unpredictable, and we would rather be honest than eat the overage.
