What a leaking cylinder actually looks like on the shop floor

A foreman at a collision shop in the western suburbs called us in October because his two-post was settling roughly an inch overnight with a loaded sedan on the arms. He assumed the power unit was shot and had already priced a replacement pump online. When we got out there, the pump was fine. The rod wiper on the driver-side cylinder had hardened and cracked, and the piston seal was bypassing under load — fluid was migrating past the piston back to the reservoir instead of leaking out onto the floor, which is exactly why he hadn’t seen a puddle.

That’s the distinction that trips up most people running an autolift garage. External leaks are obvious: oil streaking down the cylinder body, a stained slab, fluid on the crossbeam. Internal bypass is quiet. The lift still rises, it just won’t hold, and the fluid level in the tank never drops because nothing escaped the system. If your lift raises normally but drifts, suspect the piston seal. If it raises slowly and the motor labors, suspect the pump or a restricted line. If you see oil at the gland nut where the rod exits, the rod seal and wiper are done. Getting that diagnosis right before you order saves a return shipment and a second Saturday.

Inside the cylinder: the five parts that actually wear

A lift cylinder is simpler than most people expect. You have a barrel, a chrome-plated rod, a piston threaded or pinned to the rod, a gland or head that the rod passes through, and a stack of soft parts. Those soft parts are what fail. In a typical rebuild kit you’ll find a piston seal (often a cup seal or a U-cup with a backup ring), a rod seal, a rod wiper or dust seal, a static O-ring for the gland, and a bearing or wear ring that keeps the piston centered so the seal isn’t scrubbing metal on metal.

Failure is almost always heat, contamination, or age — in that order. Heat comes from running the wrong fluid or from a shop that hits 100 degrees under a steel roof in July. Contamination comes from a missing breather cap or a filler port that got topped off with a dirty funnel; grit scores the rod, and a scored rod cuts new seals within weeks. Age is just age — nitrile and polyurethane get hard, lose their memory, and stop sealing. We tell shops running a busy autolift garage to expect eight to fifteen years out of a set of seals with clean fluid and a good breather, and considerably less if the lift lives outdoors or under a leaky roof. If the rod itself is pitted or scored deep enough to catch a fingernail, seals alone won’t fix it and you’re into replacement territory.

Rebuild kit vs. complete cylinder: how we decide

The math is usually straightforward. A seal kit for a common two-post cylinder runs in the low-to-mid double digits; a complete replacement cylinder is a few hundred dollars depending on bore and stroke. So the kit wins on price every time — but only if the hard parts are good. Before we quote a kit, we want to see the rod pulled and inspected. Chrome flaking, deep vertical scores, a bent rod, or a barrel that’s been dented by a dropped tire iron all push us toward a complete cylinder, because a new seal riding on a damaged surface will fail again in a season.

Labor matters too. A cylinder rebuild on a two-post means dropping the carriage, pulling the cylinder, breaking the gland loose — sometimes with a spanner you have to fabricate — cleaning everything, reassembling without nicking the new seals, then bleeding the system and cycling it a dozen times. That’s most of a day for someone who hasn’t done it before. In an autolift garage that bills flat-rate hours, the downtime is often worth more than the parts difference, and a swap to a complete cylinder gets the bay earning again by lunch. Seasonal storage stacking is harder on cylinders than daily service

A lot of Waukee shops pick up winter revenue storing convertibles, classics, and summer-only trucks. Four-post lifts get loaded in October and don’t come down until April. That’s a very different duty cycle than raising and lowering a car eight times a day, and it stresses different parts. A cylinder that sits fully or partially extended for six months keeps constant pressure on the piston seal, and any dirt sitting on the exposed rod section gets pulled past the wiper the one time you do cycle it.

Before storage season, we walk shops through a short checklist: cycle each lift to full height and back three times to circulate fluid and coat the bore, wipe the exposed rod with a clean rag and a light film of hydraulic oil, check the fluid level with the lift fully lowered, and inspect the breather. Then set the lift on its mechanical locks — never store a loaded vehicle held on hydraulic pressure alone. The locks are the safety system; the cylinder is only the tool that gets you up to them. Shops that skip that last step are the ones calling us in February about a lift that drifted three inches with a customer’s Corvette on it. The seals didn’t fail dramatically. They just weren’t asked to hold six months of load, and they shouldn’t be.

Fluid, breathers, and the cheap habits that double seal life

The single most valuable thing we tell anybody with lift equipment is: use the fluid the manufacturer specifies and keep it clean. Most lifts want ISO 32 or ISO 46 hydraulic oil, and some manufacturers approve ATF as an alternative in colder buildings. Mixing them, or topping off with whatever bucket is open on the bench, is how you get swollen seals and a rod wiper that turns to gum. In an unheated Iowa shop, a heavier fluid gets sluggish in January and the pump works harder — which raises pressure spikes across the piston seal.

The second habit is the breather cap. It costs almost nothing and half the power units we open have a missing or plugged one. Without it, the reservoir either pulls a vacuum or draws in dust and moisture straight off the shop floor. Water in hydraulic oil turns milky, rusts the bore, and pits the rod. Third: keep a drip pan under the cylinder for a week after any repair and actually look at it. A weep you catch early is a seal kit. A weep you ignore for a year is a scored rod and a new cylinder. None of this is exotic maintenance — it’s five minutes a month, and it’s the difference between rebuilding once a decade and rebuilding every three years.

Ordering the right parts for your autolift garage the first time

The number one reason a seal kit shows up wrong is a guessed model number. Lift manufacturers built the same-looking cylinder in several bores and strokes across two decades of production, and the seal cross-sections changed mid-run. What we need from you is the serial and model tag — usually a plate riveted to the column near the base or on the power unit — plus the lift capacity, and if you can, a tape measure reading of the cylinder barrel outside diameter and the rod diameter. A phone photo of the tag and the pulled cylinder tells us more than ten minutes of description.

When to call us instead of ordering parts

There are three situations where we’d rather come out than sell you a kit. First, if the lift has been overloaded — a truck that clearly exceeded capacity, a shifted load, a bent arm — the cylinder is a symptom and we need to inspect the columns, carriage, and cable or chain system before anybody trusts it again. Second, if you don’t know the lift’s history. Plenty of Iowa shops bought a building with a lift already in it, and nobody knows if it’s ever been inspected. An ANSI-style annual inspection catches worn lock latches, frayed cables, and cracked welds that a seal kit won’t address.
