Every few months we get a call from someone building an autolift garage in Waukee who is stuck in a driveway with a semi trailer, a 2,400 lb crate, and no way to get the two apart. It usually happens on a Friday afternoon. The freight carrier gave a four-hour window, the driver has a curbside-only tariff, and the owner assumed the truck came with a liftgate. It didn’t. We have unloaded lifts off flatbeds in gravel lots, tight cul-de-sacs, and half-frozen construction sites across Dallas and Polk County, and almost every delivery-day disaster traces back to the same handful of myths. Let’s take them apart one at a time before your shipment ships.

Myth 1: “The freight company will unload it for me”
This is the single most expensive assumption we see. Standard LTL freight for lift equipment is quoted dock-to-dock or curbside. That means the driver’s obligation ends at the back of the trailer. If you have a loading dock, great. If you have a residential driveway or a new pole building with a gravel approach, the driver is going to open the doors, hand you a bill of lading, and wait — usually not very long. Detention charges start accruing after the free time expires, and some carriers will simply refuse to leave the freight and return it to the terminal, at which point you pay redelivery.
An EV specialty shop owner in the Waukee area learned this in February. Two four-post units arrived on a dry van, no liftgate, in six inches of snow. He ended up paying a neighbor with a skid loader in cash and still bent a runway ramp getting it off. The fix is boring but effective: either book liftgate service at the time of purchase, arrange a forklift or telehandler with at least 4,000 lb capacity on site for the delivery window, or have the shipment routed to a local terminal for pickup with a trailer. Myth 2: “A lift crate is basically one piece”
Not even close. A four-post lift for seasonal storage typically arrives as a bundle of long columns, two runways strapped together, a crossmember or ramp pack, a hardware carton, and a power unit box. Total weight lands somewhere between 1,800 and 3,000 lb depending on capacity, but no single piece is that heavy. The runways are usually the awkward part — 15 to 18 feet long and heavy enough that four people cannot safely carry one across a gravel pad.
That multi-piece reality is actually good news for unloading logistics. A 5,000 lb forklift with 48-inch forks handles everything. A tractor with a bucket and a couple of straps has worked plenty of times in rural Dallas County, though we don’t love it. What does not work is trying to slide bundles down a couple of 2x10s laid against the trailer deck. We’ve seen a runway get away from a crew that way and put a dent in a truck bed. If you’re setting up an autolift garage and you’re not sure what pieces are coming, ask for the packing list and plan around the longest, heaviest item rather than the total crate weight.
Myth 3: “I’ll count the pieces later”
Freight damage and shortages are a paperwork game, and you lose it the moment you sign a clean delivery receipt. Once you write your name on that BOL without noting an exception, the carrier’s liability shrinks dramatically. We tell every customer the same thing: walk the shipment before signing. Count columns. Count runways. Look for crushed carton corners, missing hardware boxes, and any oil weeping from the power unit box. Photograph everything, including the trailer interior and the shipping labels.
If something looks wrong, write “damaged” or “short” on the receipt with a description, then sign. That single sentence is the difference between a replacement part shipping free and a three-month argument. A body shop in central Iowa once accepted a delivery where the hardware carton had been opened and picked over at a transfer terminal. They signed clean, discovered it during assembly, and had to buy a full hardware kit out of pocket. In an autolift garage build, hardware kits are not something you can source at the farm store — anchor bolts, cable sheave hardware, and slack-safety components are model specific and come from the manufacturer.
Myth 4: “Any concrete slab will take it”
Freight logistics and slab prep are connected, because if your concrete isn’t ready you shouldn’t take delivery yet. Four-post lifts are more forgiving than two-post units since load is spread over four baseplates, but the manufacturer still specifies minimum thickness and compressive strength — commonly four inches of 3,000 PSI for lighter storage models and more for higher capacities. Fresh pours need to cure. Anchoring into 10-day-old concrete is a good way to spin an anchor under load.
A 30×40 pole building with a 12-foot sidewall is a very common setup around Waukee and Adel, and it works well for stacked storage as long as the slab was poured with the lift in mind. Sawcuts, control joints, and post-tension cable are the details that trip people up. We ask for a photo of the floor and the joint layout before install, because moving a column eight inches to clear a joint is easy on paper and impossible after the anchors are set. Myth 5: “Ceiling height is the only clearance that matters”
Height matters, obviously. Stacking a sedan under an SUV in a 12-foot building is realistic; stacking a lifted pickup under a van is not. But the clearance problem that ruins delivery day is usually horizontal, not vertical. Can the truck actually reach your building? We have had 53-foot trailers unable to make the turn into a rural driveway, and we’ve had drivers refuse to back down a long gravel lane after a thaw because they didn’t want to get stuck.
Do a walk of the whole approach path before you schedule. Measure the overhead door width and height, since runways come in on a forklift and need room to swing. Look for low-hanging service drops, tree limbs, and mailbox posts. Check whether your building’s door header will clear a mast-up forklift carrying a bundle. And know your gate or HOA restrictions if you’re in a newer Waukee subdivision. Ten minutes with a tape measure prevents the phone call where a driver tells you he’s leaving. Getting equipment into an autolift garage is a logistics job first and a wrench job second.
Myth 6: “Assembly is a one-person afternoon”
Four-post lifts genuinely are the most DIY-friendly category we sell, and plenty of capable owners assemble their own. But the honest version is: two people minimum, a day of work, and a real understanding of cable routing and slack-safety adjustment. Standing columns is the easy part. Threading four lift cables over sheaves, equalizing them so the runways come up level, and setting the ladder locks so they engage in the same position on all four posts — that’s where the time goes.
The two mistakes we get called out for most often are unequal cable tension, which makes the platform rack and bind, and skipping the drop-test at full load. If the runways rise more than about an eighth of an inch out of level, the locks won’t seat cleanly, and you’ll hear it before you see it. Torque values on anchors matter too; overtightening into marginal concrete does more damage than leaving them a few foot-pounds light.
