SPOA10 vs SPO10: The A Is Not Just a Letter
Rotary uses a naming convention where the A in SPOA10 means asymmetric. The SPO10 without the A is symmetric. Both are 10,000 lb capacity two-post lifts. Both are ALI Gold certified. Both use the same powerpack family, the same safety-cam ladder, and the same arm restraint system. Where they differ is in the arm geometry and column rotation, and that difference matters more than most first-time buyers realize when they are planning an autolift garage build.
Asymmetric means the columns are rotated so the vehicle sits back on the arms — you open the doors into open space, not into the columns. The front arms are shorter than the rear arms, tuned to a typical passenger-vehicle weight distribution. Symmetric means the columns face straight forward and the vehicle centers exactly between them, with equal-length arms front and rear. Neither is universally better. Which one fits your Waukee bay depends on what you plan to lift and how you plan to use the space.
The Case for the Asymmetric SPOA10
If most of what rolls into your autolift garage is a passenger vehicle, a half-ton pickup, a landscape trailer tow rig, or a mid-size SUV, the SPOA10 is the right pick. Most Waukee pole barns and steel buildings we install into have 12-foot side walls and either a flat ceiling or a scissored truss roofline. Both SPOA10 and SPO10 fit under a 12-foot flat ceiling with margin, but you should measure the actual clear height at the lift location — insulation, lighting, and door tracks can eat several inches you did not account for. If your ceiling is under 11 feet 6 inches, we need to talk about the lower-column variant or a different lift shape entirely.
For a pole barn with truss headroom above 12 feet, we sometimes recommend the extended-height column option on the SPO10, which pushes overall height closer to 13 feet. That is worth doing if you plan to raise a full-size SUV all the way up. The extra ceiling clearance transforms how tired you feel at the end of a differential fluid job. The Powerpack, the Cables, and the Common Wear Parts
Both SPOA10 and SPO10 share the same powerpack family and the same equalizer cable set. That is good news for parts support. When your autolift garage needs a cable inspection in year five, or a powerpack seal kit in year eight, the parts are the same. Differential Fluid Service on Either Lift
On either the SPOA10 or the SPO10, a differential fluid job on a half-ton is a 30-minute affair once the truck is up. Raise to comfortable working height, hear the safety-cam pawls drop, pull the fill plug first (rule number one — never remove the drain plug before verifying the fill plug will come out), drop the drain plug, catch the fluid, replace the drain plug, refill through the fill port, and lower. The autolift garage geometry means you never lie on a creeper, never scoot cardboard, never guess at the fill level.
Front differential on a 4×4 half-ton is slightly more involved because of the front driveshaft geometry and skid plate coverage, but again, the lift geometry helps. Raise the truck high enough to access the skid plate bolts from a standing position, drop the plate, run the drain and fill sequence, and the job is complete. That is the difference between doing this on a lift versus on jack stands: the sequence is the same but the ergonomics are not, and the cumulative effect on a fleet operator is real.
