A weekend hobbyist in southeast Iowa emailed us last spring asking whether a seven-thousand-pound autolift garage build was realistic in a new thirty-by-forty pole building with twelve-foot side walls and a fresh poured slab. He wanted to keep one car on the lift for seasonal storage and have room to work on a second car underneath. That is one of the most common questions we field from home shops, and the honest answer is yes, but only if you run the pre-purchase checklist before you spend a dollar. This is that checklist, in the order we walk through it with every home-shop customer between Fairfield and Fort Madison.

Measure the ceiling twice before you shop

The single most common mistake we see in a home autolift garage plan is a ceiling measurement taken from the wrong reference point. Owners look at the trusses and see fourteen feet, but the actual clearance under the trusses, under the lights, and under the garage-door track can be closer to eleven. For a two-post lift, we need at least twelve feet of clear rise under the overhead crossbar. For a four-post storage lift, we can often go as low as ten feet six, but that puts the upper car right at door-track height and eliminates working room underneath.

Measure with a laser from the finished slab up to whatever is lowest across the entire span of the lift footprint, then subtract two inches for lag mounts and slab tolerance. In the southeast Iowa build we worked with, the owner had twelve feet at the peak but only eleven feet three inches under the ceiling fan and light track. We shifted the lift six feet toward the sidewall and gained the working height back. Do the math on paper before you crack the crate open, because moving hardware after the anchors are set is a full weekend you will not get back.

What your slab needs to hold

The second checklist item is concrete. A four-post lift spreads load across four smaller runner pads, so the slab requirements are gentler than a two-post: typically four inches of 3,000 PSI concrete, and many home-storage four-posts will even work on a good three-and-a-half-inch slab. A two-post is the more demanding case, because each column concentrates roughly half the load through four to six anchors in a very small area, and that needs at least four inches of 3,000 PSI, ideally 4.25 inches.

The southeast Iowa customer had specified his slab for a truck, six inches of 4,000 PSI mesh-reinforced, which is overkill for a car lift and beautiful for a home shop. If you are building fresh, tell your contractor you want six inches at 4,000 PSI in the lift bay, even if the rest of the shop is four. It adds a few hundred dollars up front and eliminates every future capacity question. If your slab is already poured, we can core-test it for you before we ship anything so the numbers are known.

Two-post or four-post for your autolift garage

For a customer who wants seasonal vehicle storage plus room to work underneath, the answer is almost always a four-post lift. A four-post autolift garage setup lets you park a car on the lift, raise it to the ceiling, and drive a second car underneath, which is exactly the use case in the southeast Iowa email. A two-post can technically do the same job but requires the arms to be positioned every time, and the car is not sitting on its own tires, which is not what you want for long-term storage.

Where a two-post wins is service work, because you have unobstructed access to the wheels for tire rotation, brake work, and suspension. The best home shops with the room and the budget end up with one of each: a four-post along one wall for storage, and a two-post in the working bay. If you only have room for one, and your goal is seasonal storage plus underneath access, a nine-thousand-pound four-post is the honest answer for the vast majority of home-shop builds we quote.

Setting the footprint: doors, columns, and driving lane

A thirty-by-forty pole building can absorb a four-post lift and still leave a driving lane on both sides, but only if you set the footprint before you park anything else in the shop. A typical four-post has an outside width of about 108 inches and length of about 175 inches for a car-height version. Add three feet on each side for door swing and comfortable walk-around, and add ten feet at each end for drive-on ramps and driving room to align the vehicle.

For a shop the size of the southeast Iowa build, we recommend placing the lift with its long axis parallel to the garage door and offset toward the back wall by four to five feet. That leaves a full driving lane in front of the lift and enough working room behind the ramps. If you plan for a workbench, a tire machine, or a compressor, sketch those in first because a workbench you cannot walk around ends up in a corner nobody uses. Layout is easier on paper than on a slab.

Power, air, and drain utilities

Every autolift garage needs three utilities set up before install day, and the earlier you rough them in, the cheaper they cost. First, electrical: a two-post or four-post hydraulic pump wants a dedicated 220-volt, 20-amp single-phase circuit within about ten feet of the column that holds the power unit. Some smaller home lifts run on 110, but the pump speeds are slower and the motor life is shorter, so we usually spec 220 even when 110 is available.

Second, compressed air. Most modern lifts include a pneumatic release for the mechanical locks, which needs about 90 PSI at low volume, so any small home compressor is fine as long as you plan a quick-connect fitting near the lift. Third, and often forgotten, floor drainage. If you plan to wash cars, drain fluids, or bring in a snow-covered vehicle in an Iowa winter, a trench drain or center floor drain in the lift bay is the difference between a clean shop and a stained slab. Rough in the drain before the concrete is poured, and thank yourself every March.

Ordering: what to confirm before the freight bill hits

Before you place the order, confirm five things on your final quote. One, the exact model number and capacity, because a nine-thousand-pound four-post and a ten-thousand-pound four-post can differ by column height and runner length. Two, the ceiling-clearance requirement in the install manual, matched against your measurements. Three, whether the lift ships with drive-on ramps, wheel chocks, and jack tray, or whether those are extras. Four, the electrical requirement on the pump serial plate. Five, whether concrete anchors are included, because some brands ship them and some do not.

If you order through us, we run that five-point check before we send the order to the factory, and we call you if anything on your slab or ceiling is a mismatch. The southeast Iowa customer was on his way to ordering the wrong height model until we caught the ceiling-fan measurement in his first phone call. That five-minute conversation saved a return-freight bill and a two-week delay. A good autolift garage plan pays for itself before the truck leaves the dock, not after.

Delivery day in a pole building

The last checklist item is delivery day itself, which in a pole building has a couple of quirks worth planning for. Freight trucks want a hard-surface approach, so if your driveway is loose gravel and the pole building sits fifty feet back, you may need a lift-gate delivery to the end of the paved section and then a plan to move the crated lift the rest of the way. A tractor with pallet forks or a rented forklift for the afternoon is the easiest path. Do not plan to unload a 2,000-pound crate by hand, because it will not go well.

Once the crate is inside, the pole building floor gives you plenty of clear space to lay out the columns, arms, and hardware, which is a real advantage over cramming everything into a two-car residential garage. The southeast Iowa customer had his four-post uncrated, positioned, anchored, and cycled inside a Saturday and a Sunday morning, with our phone support open on speakerphone in the shop. That is the shape of a well-prepared home install, and the checklist above is what made it possible.
