A mobile brake mechanic out of Waterloo called us last spring asking for help specifying his first fixed autolift garage. He had been doing pad-and-rotor work in customer driveways for six years and finally leased a small commercial bay to run out of on the weekends. His question was simple on the surface and complicated underneath: overhead two-post or baseplate two-post, and why. We spent an hour on the phone, drove out the following Tuesday, and ended up recommending a configuration that surprised both of us. This is the case study, written up because we get this exact question every other week and the answer is not always the one shops expect.

The Bay: 22×24 Concrete Box with a 10-Foot Door

The mechanic’s leased space was a former lube-shop bay in a light-industrial building on the north side of Waterloo. It measured 22 feet deep by 24 feet wide, with an existing 10-foot roll-up door on the front wall and a service door on the side. Ceiling height was 11 feet 9 inches to the underside of the joists, which is a slightly awkward number. It is tall enough to consider an overhead two-post, but it does not leave much room for the crossbar hydraulic lines above the beam on a full-height lift. The concrete slab was existing, roughly 4 inches, and had one control-joint saw cut running left to right about 8 feet back from the door.

Brake work does not need extreme lift height. The wheels need to be off the ground, and the technician needs comfortable access to the caliper and rotor. That is different from a transmission shop that needs to stand under a raised vehicle and swing a jack. For this autolift garage, we would not need to run the lift anywhere near its full 76-inch rise. That opened up options a taller-lift use case would have closed.

Overhead: What You Give Up in a Low Ceiling

The overhead two-post is the default recommendation for any autolift garage with 12 feet or more of clearance. The crossbar carries hydraulic hoses and equalizer cables above the vehicle, sweeping the floor clean of any tripping hazards. Techs like it because the bay floor is unobstructed for creepers, air lines, and rolling toolboxes. We like it because service and cable replacement is easier when everything is accessible from a step ladder rather than a floor pit.

In this Waterloo bay, an overhead two-post would fit, but only just. At 11 feet 9 inches to the joists, subtracting the crossbar height, the safety cutoff switch, and a couple of inches of prudent gap, we would be able to lift a low sedan cleanly and a small SUV with careful attention. A three-quarter-ton pickup would not fit under the crossbar at full height, which is a problem because Waterloo brake customers drive trucks in significant numbers. The mechanic said maybe 40 percent of his current pad-and-rotor jobs are on half-ton or three-quarter-ton trucks. That killed the standard-height overhead.

Baseplate: The Right Answer, With a Small Catch

Baseplate two-posts route the hydraulic and cable lines through a shallow steel channel at floor level, connecting the tops of the two columns instead of the bottoms. That means there is nothing overhead above the columns, and the effective lift capacity is available up to the peak of the columns themselves. In an autolift garage with an 11-foot 9-inch ceiling, a baseplate two-post lets you fit trucks and vans that would not clear an overhead crossbar, and you get more usable lift height for the same building.

The catch is the floorplate. It is a low profile, usually about 3 inches tall, but it sits between the columns right where the technician wants to walk. Some techs hate it and some do not notice it after a week. For a mobile mechanic used to working around jacks and stands in a driveway, it is a non-issue. For a shop that runs a lot of dolly-mounted engine hoists across the bay, it is a nuisance. In this case study, the mechanic waved off the concern immediately: he had never used an engine hoist and did not plan to start.

Capacity, Anchoring, and Slab Reality

For brake work on passenger cars and half-ton trucks, a 10,000 lb baseplate two-post is the sweet spot. It handles anything short of a three-quarter-ton diesel with full tools in the bed, and the anchor loading is well within what a 4-inch, 3,000 psi slab can handle. We took a rebar-detector pass across his bay and found 4-inch-plus slab across the entire footprint we needed, with the control joint far enough back to give us clean anchor placement.

We did have to design around the control joint. Anchor holes must sit at least 6 inches from a joint, ideally 12. That pushed the column locations slightly forward of where the mechanic had originally sketched them, which meant the front of a lifted vehicle would poke out past the door by about 14 inches in its lowered position. Not a problem when the door is open. Would be a problem if he wanted to lower a vehicle with the door closed. We noted it, he shrugged, we moved on. This is exactly the kind of small decision we like to catch before install day rather than after.

Ceiling Anchors and Overhead Utilities

In a baseplate autolift garage, the ceiling stays free, but that does not mean it stays empty. We routed a new drop for a 240-volt outlet directly above the lift, dropped a coiled air hose reel to one side, and mounted an LED shop light on each side of the lifted-vehicle path. All of that would have interfered with an overhead two-post crossbar. In baseplate world, the ceiling is yours to use however you like. That is a real quality-of-life win, especially in a low-ceiling autolift garage where every inch counts.

One small trap: some baseplate models have an emergency air line that runs above the vehicle for pneumatic safety-lock release. Ours did not, because we spec’d a mechanical-release version, but it is worth asking. If the pneumatic release is standard on the model you are looking at, either accept the small overhead line or spec the mechanical release explicitly at order time. Retrofitting later is a headache, and pneumatic lines snapping through the years is one of the more common service calls we get for aging baseplate lifts.

Install Day and First-Week Learnings

The install took our two-man crew a full working day: drilling anchors, plumbing the hydraulics, wiring the power unit, and running a slow test cycle with a loaner sedan. Total on-site time was about seven hours, which is normal for a first-time baseplate install with an existing slab. The mechanic ran his first customer brake job on it the following Saturday morning, a rotor swap on a mid-size SUV, and reported no issues. His only complaint after week one was that he wished he had put the air compressor on the other side of the bay to shorten the hose run.

We circled back a month later on a routine call. The lift was cycling clean, no fluid weep, cable tension where we set it, and the anchor bolts holding torque. He had done 22 brake jobs in that first month, more than he had projected, and had already started quoting suspension work he had previously turned away as a mobile guy. This is exactly why we spend time getting the pre-install right. A well-spec’d autolift garage does not just handle the work you have, it opens up the work you did not know you were missing.

What Other Shops Should Take From This

The pattern from this case study is simple. Measure your ceiling honestly, not optimistically. Know your customer vehicle mix, because a 40 percent truck mix changes the lift you should buy. Do not assume overhead is always right for an autolift garage; low ceilings and pickup customers push the answer toward baseplate. Watch the control joints on your slab. Pick a mechanical safety release if you can, because it is one less thing to service in year seven.
