The part nobody warns you about when you buy an autolift garage setup is the moment a semi pulls up to your gravel driveway with 2,000 pounds of steel on a pallet and no lift gate. We got that call from an overlanding builder outside Sioux City who had ordered a two-post, taken delivery on a Friday afternoon, and discovered the driver had a twenty-minute window and no way to set the columns down. The Build: A 4×4 Shop That Needed Real Height
The customer builds overland rigs — lifted midsize trucks and 80-series wagons with roof racks, drawer systems, and rear bumpers heavy enough to change the corner weights. His pain point was transmission service. Dropping a transfer case or pulling a transmission on ramps is miserable work, and with 35s and a two-inch lift already under the truck, the useful clearance on a low creeper was gone. He needed to be able to stand upright with a transmission jack under the vehicle.
His building was a 40-foot-deep pole shed with roughly 13 feet to the bottom of the truss, a five-inch slab poured with fiber, and a 220V subpanel already run for a welder. That combination made him a good candidate for a full-rise asymmetric two-post with an overhead crossbar — enough rise to stand under a tall truck, and no floor plate to fight with when rolling a transmission jack across the bay. We spec’d a 12,000 lb unit rather than a 10K, not because his trucks are heavy but because taller vehicles with roof loads want a wider column spread and more carriage margin. How Lift Freight Actually Arrives
A two-post ships as two to four pieces: the columns strapped to a pallet or crated together, the carriage and arms banded separately, the power unit and hardware in a smaller box. Total shipping weight for a 12K commonly runs 1,800 to 2,400 pounds depending on model, and the columns are long and top-heavy. That combination is what makes unloading dangerous. It is not the total weight, it is that a column standing on end wants to fall, and a column lying flat on a forklift fork wants to roll.
Freight carriers deliver curbside on a 48 or 53-foot trailer. Unless you paid for it, there is no lift gate, and even with a lift gate the driver is not responsible for moving product away from the truck. Residential and rural deliveries add another wrinkle: a 53-foot trailer needs room to turn around, and a lot of Iowa acreages simply cannot accommodate one. We have had drivers refuse to leave a county blacktop and back down a quarter-mile lane. Moving Steel Inside a Finished Shop
Getting the pallet through the door is a separate problem from getting it off the truck. We break the shipment down outside, walk the columns in individually on heavy-duty appliance dollies or a pallet jack over plywood, and stage the carriage assemblies near their final position. Two people can walk a column upright with a strap once it is off the pallet, but nobody should try it alone — a column tipping in a finished shop will find drywall, a toolbox, or a shin. For in-floor heat, we lay plywood runners the whole path so nothing point-loads a PEX line. We laid out column spacing to the manufacturer’s spec, checked the slab thickness at the anchor locations, drilled, blew the holes clean, and set anchors to spec torque. His five-inch fiber slab was well above minimum, which is a nicer position than a lot of pole buildings we see; four-inch pours are common and many require a footing or a saw-cut-and-repour before a full-rise two-post is legal.
Electrical came next. His subpanel already had 220V for a welder, so we ran a dedicated circuit to the power unit rather than sharing, because a lift motor and a welder on the same branch is how you nuisance-trip a breaker mid-lift. We filled and bled the hydraulics, cycled the unit empty, then cycled it loaded, checked lock engagement at every position, verified both carriages rose evenly, and set the overhead shutoff bar. Then we ran his own truck up and walked him through the transmission-service workflow — where to place the arms on a lifted frame, how the pads clear rock sliders, how high to go before the roof rack meets the crossbar. That last item surprises a lot of overlanding customers with tall rigs and is worth measuring before you buy.
What the Logistics Actually Cost
Buyers focus on the equipment price and get blindsided by the rest, so here is the honest breakdown in tiers. Freight from a manufacturer’s regional warehouse into northwest Iowa is a few hundred dollars for a standard two-post, more for four-post or heavy-duty column sets, and more again for residential or limited-access delivery. Lift gate service, if it is even available for the weight, is an add. Redelivery after a failed attempt is a real charge and an avoidable one. Rigging or equipment rental for unloading ranges from free — you have a skid steer — to a few hundred if we bring or hire it.
Installation labor depends on how much of the above we absorb. A clean install into a good slab with equipment on site is a half-day job for two people.
