The autolift garage question that lands in our inbox most often from Quad Cities builders is short and specific: which lift do I actually need for my overlanding rig, and can I still get under the wheel bearings without fighting the arms? We answer this one a lot, because the truck-side of the off-road world runs heavier than a passenger car and lower than a Class 8. That middle ground is exactly where an autolift garage layout either works beautifully or fights you every session, and the details matter more than most buyers expect.

The Quad Cities Build That Started It All

Last spring a builder from the Quad Cities emailed us photos of his 30×40 pole barn and a spreadsheet of five different lifts he’d been researching. He wanted to service a solid-front-axle 4Runner build on 37s, a family SUV, and eventually store one vehicle on top and work under another. His question was practical: pick the right setup so he wouldn’t have to redo it in two years. We talked through his ceiling, a hair over 12 feet at the truss bottom, and his slab, a fresh 4-inch pour with no rebar under the intended lift pads. That combination narrowed the field fast. The 37-inch tires and roof rack meant he’d bump ceiling on any 4-post above about 10K if we didn’t check drive-over ramp geometry, and the slab needed either a saw-cut and repour for 2-post posts or a wide-footprint 4-post that spread the load. We spent about an hour on the phone before he sent a deposit.

What an Autolift Garage Setup Means for an Overlander

An autolift garage isn’t a single product. It’s the combination of lift, slab, ceiling, power, and workflow that turns a pole barn into a real service bay. For an overland builder, that combination is heavier on two axes than most home layouts: the vehicles weigh more and the workspace under the truck matters more. A stock half-ton with 33s runs around 6,200 pounds. Add a bumper, winch, roof-top tent, and dual battery, and you’re at 7,200 to 7,800. That’s still inside a 9K or 10K rated lift, but the center of gravity shifts up and rearward with a roof rack, which changes how you spot the truck on the arms. We walked our Quad Cities customer through arm-swing radius on both symmetric and asymmetric 2-posts and landed on an asymmetric because the door-clearance advantage mattered for the family SUV. Ceiling was the second constraint. His truss bottom at 12 feet 2 gave him roughly 149 inches of usable height, enough for a 2-post overhead with a stock 4Runner and tight for a lifted rig at full stroke.

Model Numbers Worth Knowing for an Autolift Garage

When we talk model numbers in an autolift garage conversation, we usually mean the Rotary SPOA10 family for entry commercial and the Challenger CL10 for value-tier commercial, plus the BendPak or Atlas equivalents on the home side. The SPOA10 asymmetric runs a 12-foot overall height on the overhead variant with lockheights around 74 to 78 inches, which fits most 12-foot ceilings if the truss is at 12-2 or higher. The Challenger CL10V3 lands nearby with similar dimensions and a lower cost of ownership on parts. On the 4-post side, a 9,000-pound drive-on is the sweet spot for storage-plus-service, and cross-bar height under the runways is the number that matters for a rooftop-tented build. We told our customer to write those numbers on a sticky note stuck to the fridge before he made a final call, because ceilings don’t move but tire size does. Wheel Bearing Service and Why Access Matters

Wheel bearing service is the reason a lot of overland builders end up with an autolift garage in the first place. Front bearings on an IFS truck are a 45-minute job when the truck is at eye level, the caliper hangs on a hook, and you can walk around the wheel without ducking. On jack stands, the same job is a two-hour back-breaker with worse torque control. On a 2-post, arm placement matters because a poorly spotted vehicle can leave the front hub crowded by the arm swing. That’s why we usually recommend a truck-adapter kit for solid-axle rigs so the arms clear frame rails and the wheels hang free. Our Quad Cities customer specifically asked about accessing the passenger-side front bearing on his Toyota, and we walked through hub torque, seal installation, and the small tool tray he’d want mounted to the column. He now services all three of his family vehicles on the same lift in an afternoon. That’s the autolift garage payoff: the job that used to be a whole Saturday becomes a couple hours before lunch.

Concrete, Ceiling, and Power Requirements

The three questions we ask on every autolift garage call are concrete, ceiling, and power. Concrete needs to be a minimum 4 inches thick for 9K and 10K 2-post lifts, ideally 4.25 inches, and at least 3,000 PSI cured for 28 days. Rebar or wire mesh isn’t required by the manufacturers, but it helps at the anchor edges. Our Quad Cities customer’s pad was 4 inches with no rebar and a control joint running through his intended lift footprint. We asked him to relocate the lift 18 inches so the joint fell between posts rather than under one. Ceiling has to clear the tallest vehicle plus the maximum lockheight, and we recommend at least 10 inches of pad above rated lockheight for airflow around ceiling shutoffs. Power for a 2-post is single-phase 220V on a 30-amp circuit, which most pole barns have or can add cheaply. Three-phase isn’t required and doesn’t gain you anything at the home scale. The Case Study: How the Build Actually Went

The build came together over about six weeks. He sourced the lift through us, a Rotary asymmetric 2-post overhead at 10K, and we scheduled a local installer through our Iowa network to handle the anchor work. Delivery was two pallets on a liftgate truck; he offloaded with a tractor and forks. Anchor drilling took about four hours because he’d added rebar reinforcement to his pad at the anchor points, which slowed the bit but gave him a much stronger install. First lift-off happened on his 4Runner and he sent us a photo the same day. Since then he’s cycled through timing belt work on the family SUV, a full brake refresh on the truck, and one wheel-bearing service that took him 52 minutes end to end. His autolift garage has already earned back the labor he was paying an indy shop for scheduled maintenance. The math on this stuff isn’t complicated when you actually track it. Most builders break even in about two years of DIY work, and after that the lift is pure savings.

What We’d Do Differently Next Time

Looking back on the Quad Cities build, three things we’d change if we started over. First, spec a taller column option if the ceiling allows. The standard overhead is fine for stock trucks but tight on lifted rigs; a taller variant costs a couple hundred more and gives you real head room. Second, add the truck adapter set at purchase rather than aftermarket, because the timing on ordering separately meant three weeks of not being able to lift the 4Runner right after install. Third, plan the compressed air run before the concrete is poured. Retrofitting an air line to a column is not hard, but sinking it in conduit under the slab is much cleaner. None of these turn the build from good to bad. The autolift garage he has is a great one, but they’re the small tweaks that separate a build you use for ten years from one you retire in five.
