The overlanding builder we installed for last spring called us with a specific autolift garage problem: he needed to do full alignments on lifted trucks with 40-inch tires, roof racks touching the ceiling, and gear boxes hanging off the back. He was building out of a shop in northern Missouri and driving up to Iowa to pick our brains before committing. The choice on the table was overhead versus baseplate on a two-post. This is a real case study from that install — what we walked, what we picked, and why the numbers came out the way they did. If you are building a similar shop, the decision tree here will save you a lot of second-guessing.

The setup: a northern Missouri overlanding shop with a ceiling problem
The shop is a 36 by 60 pole building with a 14-foot ceiling and open trusses. That is a great building for most work. It becomes a tight building when you own a lifted Bronco with a full roof rack, a Land Cruiser 80 with a rooftop tent bracket, and a customer 4Runner with an awning and light bar. Those vehicles are 84 to 88 inches tall on the roof structure, and once the lift adds 24 inches to the base, the roof rack is inside the truss chord. That was the problem.
The other problem is workflow. Overlanding builds involve pulling wheels for alignment, spinning drivelines for tire balancing on-vehicle, and running long tools under the truck for gear box and shock work. That means the technician needs to walk under the vehicle constantly, and the arms need to swing freely under weird pinch weld locations on aftermarket bumpers. An autolift garage for this duty is not a general-purpose install, and the overhead-versus-baseplate choice becomes the whole conversation.
Overhead style: where it wins and where it hurts
An overhead two-post uses a top crossbar between the columns to route hoses and hold a shutoff bar. The floor between the columns is clear. That is a huge win for alignment work, tire changes, and rolling floor jacks under the vehicle. You can push a transmission jack straight through the bay without stepping over a base tray. Techs love an overhead.
The hurt is height. That overhead crossbar sits at the top of the columns, which on most 12-foot two-posts is around 145 inches. Add a lifted truck with a rack and you can hit the bar. In this northern Missouri shop with 168 inches of ceiling, we did the math: 145-inch crossbar, plus safety clearance, minus a raised vehicle at 84 inches tall meant we had exactly 3 inches of headroom for a rooftop tent. Not enough. Overhead was out.
Baseplate style: the workaround for tall vehicles
A baseplate two-post routes the crossover hose and equalizer at the floor between the columns instead of overhead. The columns can be shorter and the vehicle can go all the way to the truss without hitting a crossbar. For a shop working on tall vehicles — lifted trucks, cargo vans, box trucks with roof access — baseplate is the answer.
The trade is the floor tray. There is a low bar between the columns carrying the equalizer, and you cannot roll a floor jack straight across it. Techs work around it, but it takes an hour to get used to. For the overlanding shop the trade was easy — the extra 20 inches of vertical clearance was worth stepping over a floor tray for every job. That is the call we made, and the customer has been running it two years without a complaint about the tray.
Alignment work on an overlanding autolift garage
Doing an alignment on a lifted truck is not a normal alignment. The suspension geometry is off from stock, the tires are heavier, and the ride height changes camber and toe curves in ways the OEM never intended. That means the tech is at the wheel with a plate longer, and he needs to be able to shim, spin, and re-measure without lowering the truck. The autolift garage has to hold the truck steady at a comfortable working height for hours.
Baseplate wins here too because you can walk all four corners of the vehicle without an overhead beam catching a roof rack. On a full-size lifted truck at 60 inches of lift height, the roof is at 12 feet, and any overhead beam is right in the way. The baseplate two-post we installed has a mid-rise mode for tire work and a full-rise mode for underbody, and the alignment tech uses both in a single job.
Concrete and anchor considerations for a baseplate lift
Baseplate two-posts put a lot of load on the floor between the columns because the equalizer tray transfers force there. That does not change the anchor spec — 4-1/4 inches at 3,000 PSI is still the minimum — but it means the slab between the columns matters more than on an overhead. We core-tested this shop’s floor at three points and found a consistent 5 inches with a light rebar mat. That was plenty.
If you are pouring new for a baseplate autolift garage, treat the whole area between the columns as anchor zone, not just the two column footprints. Six inches of concrete, rebar, and no expansion joints in the middle. This one detail keeps the equalizer tray flat over decades, which keeps the two carriages in sync, which is the whole ball game on a two-post.
What the northern Missouri build looks like today
Two years in, the shop is running six alignments a week on modified trucks, plus general service on stock 4Runners and Broncos that come through for gear installs and skid plate work. The baseplate lift has not been an issue for tools — the tech built a low-profile floor jack cart that clears the tray, and everything else stayed the same. Rooftop tents and RTTs go up under the truss without a scratch.
The customer told us the biggest win was not the vertical clearance — it was the fact that he did not have to give up his overlanding shop plan because a lift did not fit. That is the point of doing the site walk carefully. An autolift garage is a permanent decision, and picking wrong on overhead versus baseplate is the most common way it goes sideways for tall-vehicle shops.
The decision tree if you are building similar
If your ceiling is 14 feet or less and you work on lifted trucks, roof-rack SUVs, cargo vans, or anything tall, go baseplate. If your ceiling is 15 feet or more and you work on stock cars and light trucks, go overhead — the floor clearance is worth it and you will not hit the crossbar.
