A Sioux City RV and trailer service shop took delivery of a new autolift garage lift last spring, and we just wrapped their first-year service call in April. Twelve months of alignment work on class-A motorhomes and heavy trailers gave us real data on how the arm restraints, safety-cam engagement, and cable set held up under that specific workload. Install Day: A Four-Column Mobile Set on a New Slab

The shop had poured a fresh 6-inch, 4,000 PSI slab for the new autolift garage bay in the month before install. That decision made every downstream service call easier. We arrived on a Tuesday morning with a four-column Challenger CLHM-190 set, each column rated 19,000 pounds for a total capacity of 76,000. Two installers unloaded, positioned, and calibrated the columns across the workday. Electrical was a dedicated 30-amp 220-volt drop on a wall outlet built for the lift. First cycle under load was a 24-foot travel trailer as a light test, then a class-A motorhome pull-in later that week. Everything cycled clean, all four columns synchronized on the electronic control, and the shop was open for RV alignment work by Friday.

Weeks One Through Ninety: The Breakin Period

The first ninety days of a new autolift garage set are the breakin period. Anchor bolts settle, hydraulic seals bed in, and cables pre-stretch under working load. Our standard first-return visit is at ninety days: we torque-check every anchor, cycle each column empty and under load, verify the safety-cam engagement audibly, and top up hydraulic fluid if the seals shed a small volume during bedding. The Sioux City shop reported one operational concern in week six: a class-A motorhome had loaded the lift asymmetrically because the front axle sat forward of typical, and the operator wanted confirmation the arm restraints held under uneven load. They did — but the shop learned to reposition heavier motorhomes so the load is more balanced across all four columns.

Arm Restraints: The Right Question in Month Four

On a mobile column autolift garage set, arm restraints on truck adapters matter differently than on a 2-post. The Sioux City shop uses truck-adapter forks under the RV frame rails, and the fork-to-column engagement has its own locking mechanism. In month four, an operator noticed a fork pin was catching audibly on engagement — not skipping, just louder than the other three. We came out on a scheduled service window, disassembled the pin housing, cleaned residual grit from the RV shop’s outdoor slab, and re-lubricated. Fifteen-minute fix. The point: arm-restraint and adapter engagement is designed to be audibly obvious. If any operator notices a sound change from the routine engagement, call for service — do not troubleshoot under a lifted RV. That rule holds for every autolift garage in the field.

Safety-Cam Engagement Under RV Load

Safety cams — the mechanical locking pawls that hold each column at each notch height — are the load-holding backbone of a mobile column autolift garage set. Under a class-A motorhome, each cam is holding roughly 12,000 to 15,000 pounds at working height. The Sioux City shop cycled the lift approximately 40 times per week during alignment season, which means each cam engaged and disengaged around 2,000 times in year one. On our twelve-month service, we visually inspected each cam-and-notch interface, checked for wear pattern, and found normal even wear across all four columns. No cam replacement was needed. The shop’s habit of cycling under light load and only loading fully after the first safety notch engaged extended cam life meaningfully.

Cable and Hydraulic Fluid at Twelve Months

Mobile columns do not have runway cables like a 4-post autolift garage, but each column has an internal chain drive and hydraulic cylinder. At twelve months we visually inspected the chain for stretch and lubrication, checked cylinder rod condition, and drew a hydraulic fluid sample. The fluid on the Sioux City set came back clean — no water contamination, no particulate above trace levels. That is a testament to the sealed indoor bay environment. If the shop had been running the lifts outdoors on a construction site, we would have expected water contamination by month twelve. Clean fluid at year one is a strong indicator the autolift garage will hit its full expected service life without a mid-life hydraulic overhaul.

Unexpected Wins From an RV Alignment Focus

The Sioux City shop reported two operational wins in year one that we heard for the first time from an RV context. First, the mobile column set let them work on RVs that would never fit on a traditional 4-post autolift garage lift because of wheelbase or width. Alignment work on 40-foot motorhomes became routine. Second, mobile columns freed up floor space during off-hours — the columns roll to a wall storage position and the bay becomes usable for detail work or trailer prep. That flexibility does not exist on a fixed installation. Year Two Plan and What We Watch For

Year two for a Sioux City RV autolift garage looks like this: continue quarterly visual inspections, add a chain-stretch measurement at the eighteen-month point, plan a hydraulic fluid flush at year two if the fluid sample shows any drift. Cable and cam replacement is not on the radar for another four to six years at this cycle volume. The shop is on our maintenance calendar with automatic reminders.
