EV specialty shops opening across Iowa City keep asking us the same question about the autolift garage they are building: will a standard two-post handle a Tesla Model Y, a Ford F-150 Lightning, or a Rivian R1T? The answer is more nuanced than any brochure lets on. We install lifts for the growing EV service crowd every month, and the same three myths keep coming up. EVs need special lifts. Brake work is easier because there is no engine to work around. And any 10,000-pound unit is enough capacity. All three are wrong, and this article sets the record straight.

Myth 1: Any Autolift Garage Two-Post Handles EVs
The first myth is that EVs are just cars, and any 10,000-pound two-post that lifts a Camry will lift a Model Y. The numbers say otherwise. A base Model Y weighs 4,400 pounds, but a Long Range Performance with passengers pushes 5,200. A Ford F-150 Lightning Extended Range hits 6,900 pounds empty and climbs past 7,700 loaded. A Rivian R1T tips the scale at over 7,000 pounds before you add cargo. On a 10,000-pound two-post, you are lifting a truck that is 77 percent of the rated capacity, which is not a safety issue but is a durability one.
We do not recommend running any lift at more than 70 percent of rated capacity on a daily basis. Cables stretch, seals wear, and locking mechanisms fatigue faster. For an EV specialty shop, 12,000 pounds is the minimum, and 15,000 pounds is what we suggest if you plan to service Hummer EVs or Cybertrucks. A properly specced autolift garage buys you a decade of headroom.
Myth 2: EV Brake Jobs Are Easier
The second myth is that EV brake service is faster because there is no engine bay to dodge. In practice, EV brake work takes longer, not less. Regenerative braking means the pads and rotors wear unevenly and often glaze over from underuse, which requires more time on cleaning, bedding, and inspection. The parking brake calipers on most modern EVs are electronic, and you need a scan tool to retract the piston before you can even change a pad. Skip that step and you damage the actuator.
Rotor swaps on a Rivian or a Lightning also involve heavier components. A single front rotor on a Lightning weighs close to 40 pounds and requires a two-hand grip while the caliper hangs on a bungee. Myth 3: Model Numbers Mean the Same Thing Across Brands
The third myth is that a Rotary SPO12 and a BendPak XPR-12CL are basically the same lift because they are both twelve thousand pounds. They are not. Rated capacity is only one spec. Column height, max lift height, arm reach, powerpack pressure, and hydraulic hose routing all vary by brand and model, and any one of them can be the difference between a fit and a headache.
For example, the Rotary SPO12 has a max rise of 76 inches with an overall column height of 148 inches, while the BendPak XPR-12CL rises to 77.5 inches with a 168-inch column. If your ceiling is 12 feet, the Rotary fits and the BendPak does not. Arm reach also differs. The Challenger CL12 offers a wider low-pad range for low-slung sedans, while the Rotary uses a taller stacked adapter for pickups. Match the lift to the vehicle mix, not to the number on the badge. What Actual Capacity Numbers Should Be
Here is what we recommend for an EV-focused shop. Passenger EVs only (Model 3, Model Y, ID.4, Ioniq 5, EV6): a 12,000-pound two-post like the Rotary SPO12 or Challenger CL12. Mixed passenger and truck EVs (add F-150 Lightning, Rivian R1S, Silverado EV): 15,000-pound two-post. Heavy truck and van EVs (Hummer EV, Cybertruck, Ford E-Transit): 18,000 pounds minimum, and honestly you should be looking at a four-post for the long-wheelbase electric vans anyway because two-post pad geometry gets tight.
Do not undersize because the average EV weight is manageable. The worst-case vehicle sets the capacity requirement, not the average. And keep in mind that the battery pack is thick and low-slung, so lift-point clearance is different from an ICE vehicle. Some EVs need adapter pucks to reach the pinch weld without hitting the battery skid plate. Battery-Aware Lift Points and Adapter Kits
EV lift points are the single most overlooked spec in an autolift garage build for an EV shop. Every EV manufacturer publishes a service manual diagram showing exactly where the pads should contact the frame. On a Tesla Model Y, you have four reinforced puck locations. Contact anywhere else and you risk crushing a battery cell wall, which can void the warranty and, in rare cases, start a thermal event. Rivian, Lucid, and the F-150 Lightning all publish similar diagrams and each requires a slightly different adapter.
We recommend keeping a dedicated set of tall adapter pucks for EVs, separate from your ICE stack. A 3-inch tall polyurethane puck with a curved cup fits most Teslas and Rivians. The Lightning takes a taller stackable adapter because the frame rail sits higher. Label them, hang them on the wall, and train every tech on which vehicle needs which puck. Iowa City EV Shop Install Realities
