A central Iowa racing team building a dedicated alignment autolift garage asked us the right question in the right order last summer: what do we build first, second, and third? Most shop owners think about the lift first because it is the biggest ticket item. The correct sequence is actually slab, power, drainage, then lift, then tooling. Get the order wrong and you pay for it in tear-out and rework. This decision tree walks through the exact sequence we recommend for any central Iowa alignment build-out, whether you are a racing team, a shop expansion, or a first-time bay.

Step One: Slab and Slope
The first thing to get right is the concrete, because everything else bolts to it. An alignment bay needs a slab that is dead flat within 1/8 inch across the 20-foot length of the lift. Anything more than that and your alignment readings drift with the vehicle position on the ramps. We recommend a fresh 6-inch pour of 4,000 psi concrete for any dedicated alignment autolift garage, screeded to level with a laser and cured for at least 21 days before any lift install.
Slope matters too. A general service bay slopes at 1/8 inch per foot toward a floor drain to shed water and fluids. An alignment bay does not. It has to be flat, which means the drainage has to run to a perimeter channel drain outside the lift zone or to a trench drain forward of the lift. If you are converting an existing sloped bay to alignment use, plan on either grinding down the high points or overpouring a level surface on top. Slab prep costs 3,000 to 8,000 dollars depending on size, and it is not optional.
Step Two: 220V Circuit and Compressor Line
Power comes second, before the lift arrives on the pallet. An alignment scissor lift like the Rotary R516 or a four-post alignment like the Rotary Shockwave AR series both run on 220V single-phase, 30-amp circuits. Route the circuit from your electrical panel to a wall junction box within 10 feet of where the powerpack will sit. That is standard electrical work for a licensed electrician, running 500 to 1,500 dollars depending on distance.
Compressed air matters for alignment work too. You need shop air at the lift for locking pins on turntables, tire inflation, and any impact wrenches involved in caster/camber adjustments. Run a 1/2-inch air line to the lift bay from your compressor, terminated in a swivel outlet and a filter/regulator/lubricator combo. Total cost for a proper air drop: 200 to 400 dollars. Step Three: Drainage and Trench Grates
Drainage is the step most first-time builders skip and later regret. An alignment autolift garage bay accumulates coolant, brake fluid, and washer fluid from vehicles up on the lift. Without proper drainage, that liquid pools on your dead-flat alignment slab and slowly corrodes the anchor plates and the lift base. A perimeter trench drain around three sides of the bay (fore, port, starboard, leaving the drive-on end open) catches everything and routes it to an oil-water separator or a floor drain outside the alignment zone.
Trench drain installation runs 800 to 2,500 dollars for a 20-foot alignment bay, depending on whether the trench needs to be sawcut into existing slab or formed into a new pour. If you are doing a fresh pour, form the trench during the pour and save half the cost. The trench should be at least 4 inches wide and 6 inches deep with a heavy-duty stainless steel grate rated for driving over. Cheap plastic grates crack under vehicle weight. This is the kind of detail that separates a professional alignment bay from a hobby setup.
Step Four: Choosing the Right Alignment Autolift Garage Lift
Now, and only now, do you pick the lift. For dedicated alignment work, you have two real choices: an alignment scissor lift or a four-post drive-on alignment lift. Scissor lifts (Rotary R516, Challenger SX14) are flush-floor when lowered and rise on X-shaped legs, giving you a clean drive-on that becomes a level platform at working height. Four-post alignment lifts (Rotary Shockwave AR Series, Challenger 4415EL) offer longer decks and typically higher capacity, useful for medium-duty vehicles and race trailers.
For a central Iowa racing team, we usually recommend an alignment scissor if the vehicle mix is passenger cars and race cars, or a four-post if it includes pickups and haulers. Scissors save floor space when lowered because they are flush. Four-posts eat more real estate but handle heavier weight. Step Five: Turnplates, Slip Plates, and Alignment Tooling
Alignment tooling is a separate line item from the lift. You need turnplates at the front axles, slip plates at the rear, and an alignment machine (Hunter Engineering is the industry standard). Turnplates run 400 to 900 dollars per pair for hydraulic types with integrated locks. Slip plates run 200 to 500. A Hunter alignment machine is a five-figure investment (10,000 to 30,000 depending on configuration), and Hunter Iowa is the only certified dealer in our territory, which is why we recommend Hunter over any competing brand.
Race teams sometimes get by with laser-based alignment tooling instead of a full Hunter machine, especially if their alignment work is mostly toe adjustments for setup changes at the track. A quality laser alignment kit runs 800 to 2,000 dollars and gives you accurate toe readings, though camber and caster are harder to nail without a full machine. Budget for the tooling as if it is a lift-scale investment, because alignment work without proper tooling is guessing. Step Six: Install Day
Install day comes only after slab, power, drainage, and tooling are all staged. The lift install itself for an alignment scissor runs about six hours: position the frame, bolt to the anchors, plumb the hydraulics, wire the powerpack, install the ramps, calibrate the level, and load-test. For a four-post alignment, add another two hours for the extended deck length and ramp assembly. Total install labor: 900 to 1,500 dollars for a professional certified crew.
We recommend the racing team schedule the install for a weekday when no other work is happening in the bay. The install is loud, dusty (from anchor drilling), and requires clear floor space around the lift. Once the lift is functional, we do a live vehicle load test with a known weight to verify all systems are working before signing off. The team gets the ANSI/ALI ALCTV certification paperwork on install day, which they can share with insurers and race sanctioning bodies as needed. What Racing Teams Miss About Alignment Autolift Garage Setups
The single most common thing racing teams miss is that alignment work requires more than the lift itself. Teams focus 90 percent of the budget on the lift and 10 percent on the peripherals, when the right split is closer to 40 percent lift and 60 percent slab, power, drainage, tooling, and alignment machine. A world-class Hunter alignment machine on a mediocre lift outperforms a fancy lift with a laser toe-plate kit. Invest in the ecosystem, not just the biggest ticket.
The second common miss is scheduling. A proper build-out from bare slab to functional bay takes 8 to 12 weeks if concrete needs to cure and electrical work has a lead time. Racing teams often want to be operational “next month” and end up with a compromised bay. Start the build-out four months before you need to be racing on it.
