An autolift garage decision usually comes down to one question the salesperson never asks first: what are you actually going to do with the second bay eight months from now? We work with a body shop foreman in southeast Iowa who solved his winter parking problem with a lift that also does frame-off insurance work in the summer. That combination pushed him toward one specific arm geometry, and the wrong choice would have cost him thousands. This is a straight buyer’s guide, no fluff, based on the way real shops in Iowa use these things year-round.

What symmetric and asymmetric really mean

Symmetric two-post lifts have four arms of equal length and the columns face each other straight on. The vehicle sits centered between the columns, which means you can walk around the whole car with the doors open. Asymmetric lifts use shorter arms in front and longer arms in the rear, with the columns rotated inward roughly thirty degrees. The vehicle sits back toward the driver, so the door opens into a wider gap. Every autolift garage buyer hears the same pitch: asymmetric for cars, symmetric for trucks. That is not wrong, but it is not complete either. What the pitch does not say is that a shop that mixes trucks and cars all week gets more out of a versa-symmetric arm setup, which is a modern variation that swings both ways from the same column.

Why seasonal storage changes the calculus

Our southeast Iowa customer runs body work Monday through Friday and stores a customer’s classic on the lift Friday night through Monday. Storing a vehicle overhead means the arms sit under the pinch welds for days at a time, so pad grip and geometry matter more than they do for a two-hour brake job. If the arms droop or drift, you get sheet metal damage on a paint job you cannot afford to explain. Symmetric arms load evenly front to rear and store better long-term because the weight sits closer to the column pivots. Asymmetric arms shift the load rearward, which is fine for lift-and-work but adds bending moment across a weekend. For an autolift garage that pulls double duty as seasonal storage, symmetric almost always wins.

The body shop foreman’s real-world numbers

He runs a 30×50 shop with three bays, one of which holds the lift. Weekly he processes about eight cars through paint prep, five of which need the lift for rocker or quarter access. On weekends he covers two winter-storage classics, one at a time, on the same lift. He measured the fleet before he called us: nothing heavier than 6,800 lb, nothing longer than 210 inches. We spec’d a 10,000 lb symmetric two-post with 78-inch columns and a 12-inch pad on his existing four-inch concrete. He wanted asymmetric until we ran the math on his storage cycle and pointed out that the classic he was storing for a friend of a friend was worth about the same as his truck. An autolift garage that scratches a customer’s Chevelle is not one you can afford to run wrong.

Arm restraint and pad choice for storage

Any two-post that holds a car overnight needs mechanical arm restraint that actually works. Cheap toothed collars wear and skip; gear-driven restraints hold indefinitely. Pad choice is the other half. Stack-style pads let you match pinch-weld height without adapters, but they need to be seated flat every time or they walk under load. Frame-cradle pads work for trucks with body-on-frame lift points but not for unibody cars. For an autolift garage that mixes body-on-frame trucks and unibody cars across seasons, we stock both styles and train the owner to swap. On his install we included two sets of stack pads, one set of frame cradles, and a printed pad-selection sheet taped inside the control column.

When asymmetric is still the right answer

Asymmetric earns its keep in three cases. The first is a shop that does mostly cars, mostly under 5,000 lb, with a technician who needs to open doors wide for interior work like glass replacement or headliner drops. The second is a lift bay that has been laid out with the columns closer to a side wall, where a symmetric loading pattern would put the driver side against sheetrock. The third is any autolift garage where the primary job is aluminum body work on modern sedans, because door-opening clearance is safety-critical when the tech is stepping in and out repeatedly with clamps and pull rods. Outside those three cases, symmetric handles more of what the average Iowa shop does across a year.

Concrete, headroom, and the two-week rule

Every autolift garage install we do starts with concrete. Four inches of 3,000 psi at minimum, though most Iowa pole barns pour six inches by default. If you do not know what your slab is, we can core-sample or reference the builder’s spec. Headroom follows: a 10,000 lb symmetric with 78-inch columns wants 12-foot finished ceiling minimum for a mid-size SUV to fully lift with clearance. And here is the rule we tell every buyer: pour concrete at least fourteen days before install day. Green concrete does not hold anchors, and we will not warranty an install on a slab younger than two weeks. Our body shop customer had a two-year-old slab, so this was moot, but new-build customers hear it first.
