Every couple of weeks somebody calls us convinced they already know which configuration their autolift garage needs, and about half the time they’ve got it backwards. The most recent one was a European-marque specialty shop in Cedar Falls doing a lot of differential and transfer-case fluid work on Audi and BMW all-wheel-drive platforms. The owner had been told by a friend that baseplate lifts are “only for cheap garages” and overhead is always the professional choice. That’s not true, and believing it can cost you a bay. Myth #1: Baseplate Lifts Are the Budget Option

The price gap between an overhead and a baseplate two-post of the same capacity is usually small enough that it should never drive the decision. Both use the same carriages, the same arms, the same locks, and the same power unit. The only real difference is where the equalization cables and hydraulic hose run — over your head through a crossbeam, or across the floor inside a low steel channel between the columns. Rotary and Challenger both build excellent versions of each, and neither one is the discount model.

Where baseplate genuinely wins is ceiling height. A Cedar Falls shop in a converted commercial building with 10-foot trusses cannot run an overhead lift with a 12-foot-plus overall height and still raise a Q7 to working height. Baseplate removes that constraint entirely because nothing crosses above the vehicle. The tradeoff is the floor channel — you’ll roll a transmission jack over it, you’ll sweep around it, and if you do a lot of low-clearance dollying, it’s an annoyance. We’ve had techs love it and techs hate it in the same building. What we tell every autolift garage owner is simple: measure your lowest obstruction first, then talk price.

Myth #2: Overhead Lifts Always Need a 14-Foot Ceiling

This one comes up constantly and it’s only half right. Overall height on a typical 10,000 lb overhead two-post runs somewhere in the 11-foot-something to 12-foot-something range depending on model and column height, and several manufacturers offer low-ceiling column options that drop it further. A 12-foot sidewall — the same 12 feet mentioned by a homeowner who called us about a 30×40 pole building — is workable for a lot of overhead configurations, especially if you accept slightly reduced maximum rise.

What actually kills overhead installs isn’t the wall height, it’s what’s hanging from the ceiling. Sprinkler heads, gas unit heaters, radiant tube heat, ductwork, and light fixtures are the real enemies. We’ve walked into shops with beautiful 14-foot clear ceilings and a run of 8-inch heat tube exactly where the crossbeam wanted to go. Relocating a heater is doable; relocating a sprinkler main is a permit and a plumber. So before you decide overhead is off the table in your autolift garage, get a tape on the lowest hard obstruction in the bay footprint, not the peak. Then decide. Myth #3: Differential and Driveline Work Needs Overhead

The Cedar Falls shop’s actual work was the interesting part. Differential fluid service on European AWD platforms means a tech spends real time directly under the center of the vehicle with a fluid pump, a catch pan, and often a fill tool that needs vertical room above the fill port. The owner assumed overhead was mandatory because “you don’t want anything in the way underfoot.”

In practice, the floor channel on a modern baseplate lift is only a couple of inches tall and sits between the columns, not under the drivetrain. When you’re at the rear diff on a wagon, you’re standing well behind that channel. When you’re at the front diff or transfer case, you’re standing in front of it. The channel matters most for wheeled equipment crossing sideways, and that’s a workflow thing you adapt to in a week. Meanwhile, the overhead crossbeam does sit above the vehicle — which matters if you ever need to lift a tall Sprinter or pull an engine with a hoist through that space. Match the configuration to your obstructions, not to a category assumption about what a serious autolift garage looks like.

Myth #4: The Slab Doesn’t Matter Much for Either Style

It matters enormously, and it matters differently for each configuration. Both styles anchor into concrete, and both put substantial overturning load into the anchors — but baseplate lifts transfer some of that load through the floor channel connecting the columns, while an overhead lift ties the columns together at the top. That doesn’t excuse thin concrete for either one.

Our standard question is thickness, strength, and age. Most two-post manufacturers want a minimum in the neighborhood of four inches of 3,000 PSI concrete, fully cured, with more required for higher-capacity models. Iowa buildings give us surprises regularly: a 1960s commercial floor that’s five inches in the middle and two and a half at the old expansion joint, or a pole building slab poured over inadequate base that has already cracked in a grid. We core-test when we’re unsure. If the slab is short, the fix is a footing pad — saw-cut, dig out, and pour a properly sized and reinforced pad under each column. It adds a day and some cost, and it’s far cheaper than an anchor pulling out with a customer’s car in the air. Any autolift garage plan that skips the concrete conversation isn’t a plan yet. Myth #5: Arm Configuration Is a Minor Detail

For a European specialty shop, arm geometry is arguably a bigger decision than overhead versus baseplate. Asymmetric two-posts rotate the columns and use shorter front arms so the vehicle sits rearward, letting doors open past the column — great for a shop doing lots of in-cabin work and lots of sedans. Symmetric setups center the vehicle for balanced loading and handle long wheelbases and pickups better.

Then there’s the arm style itself: three-stage front arms reach short wheelbases and low sports cars far better than two-stage, and that matters when a customer rolls in with a lowered A4 or a Cayman. Frame-contact pad height and adapter availability matter too — a lot of European unibody vehicles have specific lift points that want a pinch-weld or puck adapter rather than a generic rubber block. We stock those adapters and we’d rather sell you the right ones up front than watch somebody try to make a flat pad work on a plastic rocker panel. When we spec a two-post for a shop, we ask what the five most common vehicles in the bay are, and we build the arm and adapter package around those. That’s the difference between a lift that fits your work and a lift you fight every day.

What We Actually Ask Before Quoting a Cedar Falls Shop

Our pre-quote checklist is short and it saves everyone grief. First: lowest ceiling obstruction inside the bay footprint, measured, not estimated. Second: slab thickness and any known cracks, joints, or previous patches. Third: where the electrical panel is and whether we have 208-230V single phase or three phase available, plus the amperage. Fourth: bay width from wall to wall and to the nearest adjacent bay centerline. Fifth: the vehicle mix, including the heaviest and the longest thing you expect to lift.

That last one catches people. A shop that says “we only do European cars” often forgets the customer’s Touareg towing a trailer, or the owner’s own diesel pickup. Capacity headroom is cheap when you’re ordering and impossible to add later. We also ask about floor drains, because a trench drain running lengthwise through the middle of the bay will absolutely dictate column placement and sometimes forces a baseplate model.
