Restoration and Metal Work Change Everything
An autolift garage aimed at restoration is not the same shop as one aimed at oil changes. The vehicle sits on the lift for hours or days, not minutes. Techs are welding, grinding, sandblasting, and pulling body panels off. That means the lift needs to hold a static load for extended periods, the bay needs ventilation and welding protection, and the concrete needs to tolerate hot slag without spalling. We start by asking the fleet manager how many units per year he wants to restore and how long each unit is on the lift. The Quad Cities fleet planned twelve heavy trucks a year, each on the lift for two to three weeks. That immediately points to a heavy-duty four-post with locking positions rather than a two-post. A two-post is for wheels-off service; a four-post is for wheels-on work like body panels and frame straightening. Get the archetype right first, everything downstream gets easier.
Concrete, Slag Protection, and Ventilation
Restoration work throws sparks, and sparks land on the slab. Bare concrete under a welder shop develops surface pits inside a year, and pits collect slag and grinding dust that then become fire hazards. We coat the bay floors with a slag-rated coating and lay welding blankets around the lift base during hot-work sessions. Ventilation is the other quiet safety item. Welding fumes and grinder dust need a make-up-air system, not just an exhaust fan, or you pull negative pressure and drag exhaust from the boiler room back into the bay. For restoration work, we pick a heavy-duty commercial four-post with rolling jacks, not a two-post. The four-post drive-on gives you a stable platform for a truck under body work, and the rolling jacks lift the axles for suspension, brake, and wheel bearing work when needed. The Quad Cities fleet went with a 14,000-lb Rotary four-post and a pair of matched rolling jacks. That let them park a truck on the lift for two weeks of metal work, then jack an axle to pull a hub or bearing without moving the truck off the lift. In a restoration bay, moving the vehicle mid-project is a fire hazard and a schedule killer. Wheels-on stability plus wheels-up access is the winning combination. Trade-In and Resale Values Drive the Math
The reason the fleet manager was doing this in the first place was to prove out a trade-in and resale math. If a county keeps a truck ten years instead of five, does the restoration cost less than the trade-in loss and the new-truck delta? Our answer, based on jobs we have seen: usually yes on units over 26,000 GVWR, usually no on light passenger cars. Heavy trucks lose value more slowly than they cost to restore, and buying new is a bigger check than the restoration budget for a comparable unit. Light passenger cars are the reverse. That math shapes the autolift garage. If you are restoring heavies, buy a four-post with rolling jacks and a heavy scissor mid-rise. Anchoring, Static Load, and Long-Hold Safety
A four-post that holds a truck for two weeks is under different stress than a two-post that cycles ten times a day. Static load fatigue is not usually the issue; anchor creep and cable relaxation are. We spec heavier anchors, torque them to the upper end of manufacturer spec, and re-check at ninety days. Cables in a four-post that sits at height for weeks can develop set memory at the sheave, so we recommend cycling the lift full-stroke once a week even if the truck stays on it. The mechanical safety locks engage automatically at every twelve inches on Rotary and Challenger commercial four-posts, and those locks are what actually hold the load once you park. Hydraulic cylinders are for lifting and lowering; the locks are for holding. Teach the crew that difference and your autolift garage stays safe through every long-hold restoration session.
Electrical, Lighting, and Weld Isolation
Welding near a lift needs electrical isolation. A stick welder can push stray current through the shortest path to ground, and if the vehicle chassis is grounded through the lift column, you can arc pit the lift bearings. We install a dedicated welder ground return at the bay and instruct techs to always clamp the return to the workpiece, never let it path through the lift. Lighting in a restoration autolift garage matters more than in a service shop because tech eyes are on paint and body lines for hours. LED shop lights at 5000K, mounted above and to both sides of the bay, cut shadow depth and let a bodyman see filler edges the first time.
