A mobile mechanic near the Iowa-Missouri border finally decided to stop working out of driveways in the winter and build himself an autolift garage. He wanted a small, disciplined shop for oil changes and fluid service without giving up his mobile route. He came to us with a model-number list from three different manufacturers and asked which one fit. This case study is what we found when we walked his slab and matched the models to his real workload. The Setup: One Bay, Two Uses, Modest Budget

The mobile mechanic in this case had a 24×30 pole building with a ten-foot ceiling and a four-inch slab poured for a garden tractor. That was the honest starting point. He wanted an autolift garage that could handle oil changes and fluid service on daily drivers, plus a place to park his own tow rig overnight in winter. Budget was mid-tier. Ceiling was too low for a full-rise two-post. Slab was too thin for anything commercial without a rebuild. So we started from the constraints rather than from the model list he had brought. First move was to core-drill the slab and confirm thickness. Second was to laser the ceiling at multiple points to confirm no low beams. Third was to plot column position so a lifted car cleared the door track. Once the physical shop was mapped, model comparison actually meant something. Model shopping before slab measurement is how owners buy the wrong lift.

Model Comparison: Two-Post Symmetric vs Asymmetric

His shortlist had a Rotary SPO10, a Challenger CL10, and a BendPak XPR-10AS. Three respected models. He wanted the cheapest and asked which would suffice. Our answer was to compare on three specs: overall height with overhead switch, arm reach at full extension, and pad configuration for oil-change friendly access. The Rotary and Challenger both fit under his ten-foot ceiling with floor-plate configuration, which drops the overhead beam. The BendPak asymmetric needed more ceiling than he had for its full overhead. So the choice narrowed to Rotary versus Challenger, both symmetric floor-plate. We picked the Challenger CL10 for this build because pad kit availability at our Ames warehouse was better and the local install crew was already trained. That is the kind of detail that matters for a small autolift garage without a backup lift. If the pad snaps on a Friday, we want to be able to ship one Monday.

Slab Reinforcement and Anchor Prep

The four-inch slab was thin for a commercial two-post. We had two options: pour reinforcement pads under each column, or replace the whole bay slab. Reinforcement pads won on cost. We saw-cut a four-by-four square under each column position, dug down eighteen inches, poured a rebar cage, and finished flush with the existing slab. That gave us fourteen inches of concrete right where the anchors go while leaving the rest of the shop floor alone. Anchor torque came out to spec, and the ninety-day re-torque held. If your autolift garage is going into an existing building with a thin slab, do not skip the reinforcement pads. Anchor pullout on a marginal slab is the single most common lift accident we hear about from small-shop owners. Fifteen hundred dollars of concrete work is much cheaper than a lift falling with a car on it.

Oil-Change and Fluid-Service Workflow

Once the lift was in, we designed the bay for the actual work. Oil changes and fluid service want a fluid caddy on wheels, a drop-in used-oil tank, and a filter organizer within arm’s reach. We spec-ed a fifty-gallon used-oil tank plumbed to a filler that a technician can reach from under the vehicle without climbing off the drain. We roughed-in three overhead reels for bulk oil, ATF, and washer fluid. Filter storage went into a rolling cart between the lift and the compressor. The mobile mechanic runs his oil changes on a twenty-five-minute cycle, which is faster than most fixed-shop bays because his cart is right where his hands are. The lesson: a small autolift garage can out-work a big shop if the workflow is tight. Bigger is not better; nearer is better.

Ceiling Height Trade-Offs

Ten feet of ceiling is on the edge for a commercial two-post. Full-rise on a symmetric floor-plate lift with a compact carriage puts the top of the tallest passenger vehicle within a few inches of the ceiling. For his workload, that was fine because oil changes and fluid service want the vehicle at shoulder height, not head-clearance height. He lifts to the stop and works. If he had wanted to walk under the vehicle for transmission or exhaust work, we would have insisted on a taller building. Ceiling height is where honesty about workload pays off. We asked him what he actually did all day. Oil, filter, brakes, tire rotation. That does not need full walk-under, so ten-foot ceiling worked. Match the ceiling to the workload, not to the biggest lift in the catalog. This is the discipline that keeps an autolift garage build on budget.

Electrical, Lighting, and Winter Comfort

An Iowa-Missouri border winter is not gentle. Concrete slab plus ten-foot walls plus no insulation equals a shop you cannot use half the year. Before the lift went in, he added six inches of foam under the slab (his second pour) and R-38 in the ceiling. That decision came from an insurance conversation we sat in on: heated shop, lower theft risk, lower fluid-freeze risk, better rate. He also added a natural-gas heater with a thermostat set at forty degrees overnight. Electrical went in at 200 amps because we knew he would add a compressor and a diagnostic scan tool. Lighting was two rows of LED shop lights, one over each side of the lift, at 4000K. Winter comfort turns a hobby shop into a real autolift garage. If your slab is uninsulated, plan the insulation first and the lift second.

Service, Parts, and Route Support

A mobile mechanic with one lift lives on parts availability. If the lift goes down, so does the bay, and his mobile route eats the overflow.
