First: Get the Vehicle Off Before You Diagnose
Safety-first means we do not diagnose a leaking cylinder with a truck on the lift. Ever. The first move is to drop the vehicle to the ground on wheels, roll it out of the bay, and only then start looking at the cylinder. If the lift will not lower because the leak has depressurized the system, the mechanical safety cams must be engaged and the vehicle supported on jack stands before anyone gets under it. The West Des Moines fleet had a truck partway through a body restoration with the front cab off, so getting the vehicle out was not simple. We supported the frame on rated stands, engaged all four locks, released hydraulic pressure through the manual bleed, and only then approached the cylinder. Diagnose the Leak Type Before Ordering Parts
Cylinder leaks come in three flavors: rod-seal weep, piston-seal internal bypass, or barrel-body failure. Rod-seal weep shows fluid on the outside of the cylinder rod. Piston-seal bypass shows the lift creeping down under load without external fluid loss. Barrel failure shows a bulge, crack, or fluid on the outside of the barrel wall. Each has a different fix. Rod seals rebuild in an hour with a seal kit. Piston seals rebuild in half a day. Barrel failure means new cylinder, full stop. The West Des Moines cylinder had rod-seal weep with clean fluid, so it was a rebuild candidate. We ordered the seal kit, torqued down the rod nut, and had the lift back in service the next morning. Seal Kit Selection: Genuine vs Universal
Rotary and Challenger both sell genuine OEM seal kits sized to their specific cylinder bores. Third-party universal kits exist and work for some sizes, but the tolerances vary. On a fleet autolift garage that sees weeks of static load, we always spec the genuine OEM kit because a marginal seal on a static-hold lift will weep faster than one on a shop that cycles quickly. Rebuild Procedure: What Not to Skip

The procedure: drain the cylinder, remove the rod nut, pull the rod, inspect the rod chrome for scoring, replace all seals in the kit, clean the barrel, lubricate the new seals with the correct hydraulic fluid, reinstall the rod, torque the nut to spec, and reinstall on the lift. The two most-skipped steps are chrome inspection and torque-to-spec. A scored rod will destroy a new seal in hours; scored rods must be replaced or re-chromed, not just re-sealed. Rod nut torque to spec is what keeps the assembly under seal pressure; hand-tight is not good enough. We use a calibrated torque wrench and document the value. It is not fancy but it is what keeps rebuilds first-time-right.
Hydraulic Fluid: The Silent Killer of Seals
The single biggest cause of premature cylinder seal failure we see is contaminated hydraulic fluid. Water gets in through breather caps, dirt gets in through fittings, and both destroy seals from the inside. The West Des Moines fleet had five-year-old fluid with visible cloudiness. We flushed the whole system, refilled with fresh AW-32 hydraulic oil, and sent a fluid sample out for analysis. Analysis came back with elevated water and iron content, consistent with the seal wear we had just rebuilt. We put a desiccant breather on the reservoir and a return-line filter in the loop. Six months later, follow-up analysis was clean. Anchor and Column Check During Rebuild
While the lift is offline for a cylinder rebuild, we always check anchor torque and column plumb. It costs nothing extra and it catches problems before they become emergencies. On the West Des Moines lift, we found one anchor under-torqued by fifteen percent, likely from years of static load and Iowa freeze-thaw. We re-torqued to spec, checked plumb at base and top of column, and confirmed carriage roller wear was within tolerance. All fine.
