A collector in southern Minnesota called us last spring with the same question we hear from garage-based enthusiasts every month — what does the first year of autolift garage ownership actually look like? He had six cars, one pole barn, and a plan to lift and store two of them. This is his first-year story, anonymized, from the day the crate arrived to the first differential fluid service on the lifted platform twelve months later. Week one: Crate arrival, unpacking, and the first surprise
The lift landed in the collector’s pole barn on a Tuesday morning in April. The crate was bigger than he expected — that’s a common first reaction — and the freight driver dropped it at the shop door on a pallet, leaving the unpacking and staging to the owner. The collector had a skid-steer with forks, which handled everything. The one surprise? Week two: Concrete inspection and anchor layout
Week two is the concrete pass. Before we anchor any autolift garage lift to the slab, we test-hammer the concrete in the anchor zones and, if the slab is unknown, drill a small test core. The collector’s pole barn slab was 5 inches — one inch under the manufacturer’s preferred 6 inches for a four-post at his capacity, but within the acceptable range for that specific model. We walked him through the tradeoff and recommended he proceed. Anchor layout is done next: we mark the anchor holes to manufacturer spec, verify column spread and runway spacing, and check that the lift positioning gives him the walking clearance he wants around each stall. Small details like the distance to the pole barn’s electrical panel and the future placement of a workbench next to the lift matter — get them right on layout day and the bay works forever.
Week three: Install day and ALI Gold paperwork
The install ran a full day. We drilled anchors, set columns, laid runways, plumbed the hydraulics, ran the power connection, tensioned cables, and verified all safety-lock positions on both sides. The lift came in ALI Gold certified from the factory — the certification tag was already on the column. We handed the collector the ALI paperwork, the manufacturer’s operator manual, the anchor torque log, and the install commissioning sheet. That documentation goes in a folder with the lift’s data-plate photo and any future service invoices. Months one through three: Break-in, cable tension, and safety latches
The first three months of any new autolift garage are the break-in period. Cables stretch slightly, hydraulic seals seat, and safety-lock ladders find their working positions. We schedule a 90-day follow-up on every install to re-tension cables, re-torque anchors (they do settle), and confirm that both column safety latches are engaging cleanly at every lock position. The collector’s lift needed one cable-tension adjustment at the 90-day mark — typical for a new four-post. Safety latches were fine on both columns. We also walked through the daily operating checklist with him one more time: raise slowly, engage the mechanical lock at working height, verify the lock is set before leaving the vehicle elevated, and never operate the hydraulic lower with someone under the vehicle. Standard safe-operation stuff, but worth repeating in month one when the muscle memory isn’t there yet.
Months four through six: First real jobs — brake work and differential fluid
By month four the collector was doing real work on the lift. First job was brake pads on the daily driver — routine, went smoothly, took an hour. Next was a differential fluid service on his ’68 muscle car. That car lives on the storage position most of the year, so lifting it for a fluid change was the first heavy use of the storage function. The four-post runway configuration in his autolift garage made the differential drain and refill straightforward — jack the rear axle on the ramps, drop the diff cover, drain, clean, reseal with new fluid. Months seven through twelve: Storage lift, the second car, and workflow

Anchor torque check — one anchor came in slightly low and got re-torqued to spec. Cylinder-rod pitting — none. Hose weeping — none. Overall condition — excellent for a one-year unit.
