An RV and trailer service shop in northern Missouri called us about eighteen months ago because they were losing money on exhaust jobs. Every Class C tailpipe repair and every driveline U-joint on a towable meant two hours on creepers with the unit up on jack stands, and half of those jobs turned into three hours because nobody could see what they were doing. They wanted an autolift garage bay that would let two techs stand upright under a 26-foot motorhome. We spent a long time on the phone before anyone spent a dollar. Here is how that first year actually went — install day, the first real service call, the mistakes we made, and what the equipment is realistically worth if they ever sell it.

Why a Two-Post Was the Wrong Answer Here

The shop’s first instinct was a big two-post. It is the default answer for most automotive work, and for good reason — it gives wheels-free access and it is the cheapest path to standing-height clearance. But motorhomes and long towables break the two-post model in three ways. Wheelbase runs past what most arm sets can reach, frame lift points on RV chassis are often inaccessible or unrated, and once you get a 14,000-pound coach in the air on two columns you are asking a lot of a slab that was poured for parking trailers.

We walked the building and said no to the two-post. That is a conversation we have more often than people expect, and it costs us the easy sale, but selling somebody the wrong lift is how you end up doing warranty visits for five years. What fit instead was a set of four mobile columns, wireless, rated well past what their heaviest unit weighed. The columns pick up under the tires, which sidesteps the frame-point problem entirely. They roll out of the way when the bay needs to be a paint prep area on a Friday. And for a shop that also services fifth-wheels and box trailers with wildly different wheelbases, the flexibility mattered more than anything a fixed lift could offer. That is the honest starting point for planning an autolift garage around RV work.

Install Day and the Thing We Missed

Mobile column installs are simpler than anchoring a two-post — no drilling, no epoxy, no 28-day concrete cure to wait on. We delivered, charged the batteries, paired the wireless controls, ran the columns through a full cycle empty, then loaded a shop truck and cycled again under weight. Total time on site was under a day including training. The training piece is not optional with mobile columns; a four-column set has to be operated as a synchronized group and every tech needs to understand the lock sequence and what to do if one column drops out of the group.

What we missed was the floor. Mobile columns need a flat, sound surface with no significant slope, and this building had a drainage pitch running toward a center drain — about a quarter inch per foot, which is normal for a wash-capable bay and completely fine for parking. Under a loaded column set it meant the front pair sat measurably lower than the rear pair, and while the system handled it, the operators did not love the look. We solved it with a set of leveling pads at the low positions and a painted layout showing where columns go for the three most common unit lengths. Fifteen dollars of paint and a couple of steel plates. Lesson learned: in any autolift garage, check the slab with a laser level before delivery, not after. Slope is invisible until something tall is standing on it.

Exhaust Work: The Job That Justified the Purchase

Exhaust is where the return showed up first. On a motorhome, a tailpipe or muffler replacement involves cutting, fitting, clamping, and often fabricating a hanger — all overhead work in a space where you cannot get a torch or a chop saw positioned properly if you are lying on your back. With the coach at chest height on columns, two techs work the same section from opposite sides. The shop told us a job that had been booking four hours was closing in ninety minutes to two hours by month three.

The details matter more than the raw height. Heat is the big one — cutting and welding under a raised vehicle means sparks fall on you, on the columns, and on whatever is on the floor. They added a welding curtain on a rolling frame and moved the parts cart out from under the lifted zone. Second, exhaust systems on RV chassis run alongside fuel and air lines and, on newer diesel units, DEF tanks and sensor harnesses that are expensive to melt. Being able to see the whole run at once instead of feeling for it in the dark prevented at least two of those mistakes in the first year, by their own count. And third: at standing height you can actually get an accurate measurement before you cut pipe, which cut their scrap tubing bill noticeably. None of that shows up on a spec sheet, but it is the real argument for an autolift garage in a shop doing this kind of work.

Driveline Access and the Long-Wheelbase Problem

Driveline was the second win. U-joints, carrier bearings, center support mounts, and the occasional bent shaft on a towable that met a curb harder than the owner admitted — all of it is midship work, and midship on a long chassis is the worst place to be on jack stands. Two-post lifts complicate it too, because the arms want to be near the pickup points and those are frequently right where you need to swing a shaft out.

Column lifts leave the entire underside clear from bumper to bumper. Nothing between the wheels. For a shaft that has to come down and go out the side, that is the difference between a smooth job and an hour of geometry. They pair the columns with a rolling transmission jack for anything heavy, and a set of tall stands staged nearby for the rare case where they want to unload the wheels. The other thing that changed was how they schedule. Because the columns roll, they can stage a unit, lift, do the driveline work, lower, and move the columns to a second bay for a different unit without tying up a permanent structure. Over a year that flexibility was worth more than any single job. If you are laying out an autolift garage for mixed-length vehicles, that mobility is a genuine operational asset and not just a marketing bullet.

What Maintenance Actually Looked Like in Year One

Honest answer: light, but not zero, and different from what a two-post owner deals with. Batteries are the main consumable on a wireless column set. They need to be kept charged, and in an unheated Missouri shop in January, batteries that sat at partial charge over a cold weekend came up sluggish. The shop put the charging station on a timer and stopped having that problem. Second item was hydraulic fluid level and cleanliness — four independent power units means four checks, not one, and it is easy to check three and forget the fourth.

Beyond that, it was inspection of the lifting forks for deformation, checking the carriage rollers, and verifying the mechanical locks engaged at every position on every column. We came back at the twelve-month mark for a full ALI-style inspection and found exactly one item: a slightly weeping fitting on one power unit, replaced in ten minutes from stock. That is a good first year. We stock seals, fittings, controls, batteries, forks, and full power units for the major mobile column brands, which is the reason a small issue stays a small issue instead of parking a bay for a month waiting on a factory order. Trade-In and Resale: What Lifts Actually Hold

People ask us about resale constantly, usually right before they buy, and the honest picture is better than most equipment. Automotive lifts hold value well because the underlying technology moves slowly — a well-maintained hydraulic column set from ten years ago does the same job as a new one. On the used market, quality name-brand lifts with documented maintenance commonly bring somewhere in the range of half to two-thirds of original cost at the five-year mark, and mobile column sets in particular hold up because demand for them is steady and supply is thin.

What kills resale is predictable. Missing documentation is the biggest one — no manual, no inspection records, no serial plate, and a buyer discounts hard because they cannot source parts confidently. Second is off-brand equipment with no parts channel; we have seen lifts that were a bargain new become worth almost nothing at resale because nobody can get a cylinder for them. Third is cosmetic and structural neglect: rusted columns, bent forks, cut-off cables. Keep the paperwork in a folder, keep the annual inspections stamped, and keep the paint intact, and an autolift garage setup is one of the few shop investments you can substantially recover. Would They Do It Again? And What We’d Change

Yes, with two adjustments. First, they would have bought a six-column set instead of four. Not because four cannot handle their current work, but because tandem-axle coaches and long fifth-wheels occasionally want six points, and adding two columns later means matching a control system and a production year — doable, but not free, and not always possible if the model has changed. Buying the extra pair up front costs less than adding it in year three. That is the single most common regret we hear from shops in this category.

Second, they would have run the electrical differently. The charging station ended up on the far wall, which means dragging columns across the bay at end of shift. Twenty feet of conduit at build time would have fixed it. Neither of these is a disaster; both are the kind of thing you only learn by living with the equipment. The core decision — mobile columns over a fixed lift for a mixed RV and trailer fleet — was right, and the exhaust and driveline throughput gains paid for the difference within the first year.
