Autolift Garage for a Vehicle Collector: Financing an Urbandale Install and the First Year of Ownership

A retired collector in Urbandale called us the week his pole barn slab finished curing. He had eight cars in various states of drivable, wanted to store two more by stacking them, and wanted the whole autolift garage project financed rather than paid up front. Twelve months later he was calling to schedule a first-year service and to send a picture of a Camaro suspended over a Corvette. This article is his story, told with the numbers, the financing terms, the payment schedule, and the honest ups and downs of the first year owning an autolift garage. If you are staring at a similar decision, this is what actually happens.

Home-garage and light-commercial 4-post lifts for stacking cars, doing tire rotations, and adding storage without giving up floor space.

Why a Collector Picks a 4-Post Over a 2-Post

The collector had done his homework and walked in asking for a 2-post. For maintenance-only shops that is often the right answer, but for an autolift garage that has to double as long-term storage, the 4-post wins almost every time. A 4-post carries the car on its wheels, so you can leave a vehicle parked on it for months without pulling swing arms or worrying about frame contact. It also lets you roll a floor jack under to lift the axles when you do need to spin a tire.

He landed on a 9,000 lb 4-post with a jack tray, a drip tray for the car parked underneath, and caster kits so he could roll the empty lift out of the way when he wanted to work on the floor. That combination is our most-common configuration for a collector-focused autolift garage. It stores, it services, and it moves out of the way when a project needs the open bay.

Financing Terms That Actually Made the Deal Work

He did not want to write a five-figure check. The current offer we run through our commercial lender is 0% APR for 12 months with a 90-day payment deferral, and for an Urbandale customer with a normal credit profile it approved online in about ten minutes. That structure lets you take delivery, get the lift installed, and drive cars onto it before the first payment is due. For a retiree on a fixed income, that 90-day breathing room mattered as much as the zero-percent rate.

Longer terms are available too, quoted separately by the bank at a market rate in the six to nine percent range depending on term and credit. We do not publish those numbers because they change, and we send everyone directly to the banker rather than guessing. The point for anyone budgeting an autolift garage: the equipment price and the monthly out-of-pocket are two different conversations, and the second one is usually easier than people assume.

The Payment Schedule He Actually Ran

His schedule looked like this. Order placed in late April, deposit run through the lender as the down. Freight and install charged at delivery in mid-May, rolled into the same financed amount. First payment due in August under the 90-day defer. Twelve equal monthly payments through the following July at zero interest, paid off before his first-year service call to us. Total financed came in at the low five-figure range including install and the accessory kit.

He described it as the cleanest big purchase he had made since his last vehicle. The paperwork was electronic, the lender handled it directly, and we handled the equipment side. If you are running an autolift garage as a hobby rather than a business, that structure makes the whole thing feel less like a capital project and more like adding a piece to the collection.

Install Day: What Actually Happened

Delivery landed on a Wednesday. A dedicated LTL truck brought the crate to his pole barn driveway with a lift-gate, and our install crew arrived Thursday morning. A 4-post autolift garage install runs faster than a 2-post because there is no anchor drilling — the four columns sit freestanding on the slab, tied together by the runways. Total install took about five hours from truck to first cycle, including the jack tray and the caster kit.

The one hiccup was the drip trays. He had ordered two, and we had shipped one. That is on us. A second tray went out the next day on ground freight and he had it before the weekend. Nothing on his first-year story went sideways in a way we could not fix inside 48 hours, but every install has a small item like that. Plan for it.

The First Tire Rotation on the New Lift

Six weeks in, he called with his first real question: how do you rotate tires on a 4-post autolift garage without pulling all four off the ground at once? The answer is the sliding jack tray. You drive the car onto the runways, raise the lift to working height, then roll the jack tray into position under the axle you are working on and lift that axle off the runway. Spin the tires, torque them back down, move to the next axle.

The whole rotation took him about 25 minutes on his first try, and he sent a picture. That is the moment when a new lift owner stops being nervous about the equipment and starts thinking about what else they can do. By the end of month three he was doing brake bleeds and fluid changes on his own cars, saving what he estimated at four to five figures a year in dealership labor.

Storing a Car on the Lift and the Car Underneath

The real reason he bought a 4-post autolift garage was to double his storage. Pole barn, 30 by 40, with four bays worth of floor space. Without the lift he could fit six cars nose to tail. With one 4-post he fits eight, because the two lift bays are now double-decker. That is a straightforward add of two cars for the price of one lift, and in Iowa where garage space is cheaper than city storage but not free, the math works.

A few practical notes he learned. Cars stored up top should have the fuel down to a quarter tank, batteries on tenders, tires at storage pressure. The car underneath needs to clear the lowest point of the runways by at least a couple of inches when the lift is fully lowered — measure this before you buy. And keep a fire extinguisher within reach. An autolift garage that doubles as long-term storage is not a place to compromise on the basics.

Year One Service and What Comes Next

Twelve months in, we sent a tech out for a first-year service: cable inspection and tension check, pulley grease, safety-latch cycle test, hydraulic hose check, and a fresh coat of touch-up paint on the runway wear points. Total service call ran a low three-figure number and took under two hours. On a properly-installed autolift garage of this class, that is the maintenance rhythm we recommend once a year for a home collector.

His next project is a mid-rise scissor to add a third work station for the cars he does not need to lift chest-high. The point of laying out the first year in this much detail is to show that a financed autolift garage is not a stunt purchase. It is a piece of equipment that pays back in cars stored, jobs done at home, and time saved not driving to a dealer. If you want the same walk-through for your build, call the number at the bottom.
