A small-fleet operator running a short-haul delivery outfit out of southern Minnesota called us with a clean question: which lift makes sense for an autolift garage that will see steady CV axle and half-shaft work on the fleet vans. He was torn between a 2-post and a 4-post with a jack tray, and he wanted a real side-by-side, not a sales pitch. This article is the same comparison we sent him, laid out honestly so a fleet manager can pick the right configuration on the first try. It also covers freight logistics from our Iowa yard up into southern Minnesota, which is not the same as a delivery inside city limits.

The CV Axle Job as the Deciding Factor
A CV axle replacement wants three things from a lift: enough height to get under the van comfortably, clean wheel access to pull the hub, and stability while the tech is pulling and pushing with real force on the axle nut. A 2-post lift gets the vehicle up on its frame, wheels dangling free, which is textbook for axle work — you can spin the hub, pull the axle straight out, no interference from runways. A 4-post lift gets the vehicle up on its wheels, which is not ideal for CV work unless you also have a rolling jack.
That is the crux of the decision for a small-fleet autolift garage. If CV axles, ball joints, and any suspension work are the daily bread, 2-post is the answer. If the fleet is doing mostly fluid changes, filter swaps, and undercarriage inspections, 4-post is faster because you drive on and go. For this operator, running seven vans hard on regional routes and blowing CVs regularly, we landed on 2-post as the primary lift with a possible 4-post added later for storage overflow.
Capacity: How Much Lift Does a Fleet Van Actually Need
A loaded cargo van tops out around 8,500 to 9,500 pounds depending on model and options. Fleet vans running parts delivery generally run lighter, but a lift should be sized for the worst-case, not the average. A 10K 2-post gives you headroom for any full-size van and light pickup, but not for a medium-duty. A 12K 2-post handles anything in the small-fleet universe and gives you resale flexibility if the fleet grows.
For an autolift garage that will only ever see the current van fleet, 10K is fine. For a fleet manager who might add a box truck or a medium-duty in year three, spend the incremental couple thousand on the 12K now. The 12K lift is not much bigger physically, uses the same footprint, and covers a wider range of vehicles. On the 4-post side the analog is a 9K versus 12K, same logic. Under-spec on capacity is a mistake you cannot undo without buying the lift twice.
Ceiling Height and the Van Problem
Full-size cargo vans are tall. A high-roof Sprinter or Transit can push 9 feet from wheel to roof. A 2-post autolift garage lifting that van to comfortable working height wants at least 11.5 feet of ceiling clearance, ideally 12. The overhead cable and hose assembly on a standard 2-post sits at about 12 feet at the top of the columns. If your shop ceiling is 12 flat, look at low-ceiling 2-post models that route the cable and hose through the floor instead of overhead.
Low-ceiling 2-post lifts run a bit more expensive and require a small trench cut in the concrete to run the crossover line under the floor. For a fleet shop with a legitimate ceiling limit, that trench work is a one-time cost that keeps you from having to build a taller shop. Southern Minnesota shops in older pole buildings hit this constraint often. Verify ceiling before ordering; nothing is worse than a lifted van hitting the overhead assembly on the way up.
The 4-Post Case for a Fleet That Grows
Even for a fleet doing CV axle work as the primary job, a 4-post autolift garage has a real case as a second lift. Storage during winter, quick fluid changes without pulling arms, tire rotations, and the occasional inspection all go faster on a 4-post than on a 2-post. Fleet operators who add a 4-post as the second lift usually leave it as the drive-on quick-service bay and reserve the 2-post for the heavy work.
If budget forces a single lift now with the intent to add a second next year, buy the 2-post first because it does more. A 4-post cannot easily do CV axle work; a 2-post can do everything a 4-post does, just slower on the drive-on jobs. The upgrade path is 2-post first, 4-post later. Reversing that order leaves you with the wrong lift for the primary job and a slow start on a fleet autolift garage build-out.
Freight From Iowa to Southern Minnesota
Freight from our Iowa yard to a southern Minnesota address adds a couple hundred dollars over a delivery inside Iowa but is otherwise identical logistics. Same LTL carrier, same 53-foot trailer, same 4-hour delivery window. Winter runs get complicated because rural southern Minnesota roads occasionally close for weather; we schedule autolift garage deliveries north of the state line for the middle of the week, giving us weather flex in either direction.
Cross-state delivery does not affect install pricing significantly. Our install crew travels the route regularly and treats southern Minnesota as an extended service area. A 12K 2-post crate weighs closer to 1,600 pounds than the 1,200 of a 10K, and the columns are longer. That crate wants a forklift for unload, not a pallet jack. Most small-fleet shops have a forklift for pallet-load parts deliveries anyway, so this is usually a non-issue. If your fleet does not have one, budget a forklift rental for the delivery day; the truck rental yard in most southern Minnesota county seats has a 5,000 lb telehandler for a reasonable day rate.
Unload takes about 30 minutes with a forklift, and the crate lands directly at the install position. That saves the install crew an hour the next day. If you are staging the autolift garage install, coordinate the forklift rental for the same day as delivery, not install day; you want the crate positioned before the install tech shows up so they can start assembly rather than wrestling freight.
Total Cost Side-by-Side
