A small fleet operator in Marion called us in the spring after chewing through a set of front tires on three of his service vans in under fourteen months. He was outsourcing alignments to a shop across town, waiting three days for each appointment, and paying for it twice — once in labor and once in rubber. He wanted to bring the work in-house, and the question he led with was whether his autolift garage needed a dedicated alignment rack or whether he could get by with the right two-post. That’s a fair question, and the honest answer starts with a much smaller decision most people skip past entirely: symmetric arms or asymmetric arms. Here’s how the two compare when alignment work is part of the mix.

What Symmetric and Asymmetric Actually Mean
The terms get thrown around loosely, so let’s be precise. On a symmetric lift, the four arms are the same length and the columns face each other directly. The vehicle sits centered between the columns, roughly half its weight forward of the posts and half behind. On an asymmetric lift, the columns are rotated — typically thirty degrees — and the front arms are shorter than the rear arms. The vehicle sits back in the bay so that more of it is behind the columns, which opens up the door swing dramatically.
That door swing is the entire reason asymmetric exists. On a symmetric setup with a sedan, the driver’s door hits the column when you open it, and techs learn to squeeze out sideways or crawl across the console. On an asymmetric, you can open both doors fully on most passenger cars. There’s a third category — Rotary calls it versymmetric — where rotated columns are paired with longer, three-stage front arms so the lift can be spotted either way depending on the vehicle. For a mixed fleet, that flexibility is often the right answer. But before you pick, you need to know what your vehicles weigh, where they load, and whether anyone in your autolift garage is going to be doing alignment work on them.
Why Alignment Work Changes the Calculation
Here’s where a lot of shops get tripped up. Alignment doesn’t happen on a two-post at all — not properly. A real alignment requires the suspension loaded at ride height, wheels on a flat, level surface, with turnplates up front and slip plates at the rear. That’s a four-post alignment rack or a scissor alignment lift, period. A two-post lifts the frame and lets the suspension hang, which is exactly the opposite of what you need for measuring camber, caster, and toe.
So when a fleet operator says he wants to do alignments, the first thing we clarify is what he actually means. Sometimes he means full alignment service, in which case he needs a rack and an aligner and that’s a much bigger conversation. More often — and this was the case in Marion — what he really needs is to catch and fix the things that cause alignment problems: worn tie rod ends, sloppy ball joints, bent control arms, tired struts, and misadjusted torsion bars on the heavier vans. All of that is two-post work, and doing it well is what makes an alignment stick. His plan ended up being a two-post in the autolift garage for the wear-item repairs, with alignments still farmed out but only after his own tech had already replaced whatever was worn. That cut his outsourced alignment count roughly in half and eliminated the comebacks.
Configuration One: The Symmetric Two-Post
For a fleet of service vans and pickups, symmetric has real advantages. The load is distributed evenly across all four arms, and for a long-wheelbase vehicle that’s a genuine stability benefit. Vans, cutaways, dual-rear-wheel trucks, and anything with a heavy rear load bias sit better on a symmetric lift because you can spot the vehicle at its true center of gravity rather than fighting the geometry of shorter front arms.
The second advantage is arm reach. Symmetric arms are all the same length, so on a long truck you’ve got plenty of extension to reach the rear pickup points without maxing out a three-stage arm. On the flip side, the door-swing problem is real, and if half your fleet is passenger cars your techs will hate it within a week. Symmetric lifts also require more attention to spotting: you’re aiming for the vehicle’s center of gravity to sit at or just behind the column line, and getting that wrong on a rear-heavy van means the front arms unload. We’ve seen it. Nothing dramatic happened, but the truck shifted enough to scare the tech who was under it. If your fleet skews heavy and long, symmetric is the right call for an autolift garage, and we’d pair it with the truck-adapter set so you’re not stacking blocks on the pads.
Configuration Two: The Asymmetric or Versymmetric Two-Post
The Marion operator’s fleet was mixed — six cargo vans, three half-ton pickups, and four sedans used by outside sales staff. That mix pushed us toward asymmetric, specifically a versymmetric 10,000 lb unit with three-stage front arms. On the sedans, he gets full door swing and easy access to the driver’s seat, which matters when you’re checking steering play or resetting a service light mid-job. On the vans, he can spot the vehicle further forward and use the longer arms symmetrically, which restores the load balance.
The compromise is that asymmetric requires more thought at spotting time. A tech who’s used to driving in until the wheels stop and slapping the arms under will eventually put a van on backward and wonder why the lift feels tippy. We spend real time on this during install — walking the crew through where each vehicle in their fleet should sit, and in a couple of shops we’ve painted floor marks for the two or three most common vehicles. It takes ten minutes and it prevents the mistake permanently. Capacity is the other consideration: a loaded cargo van with shelving, a ladder rack, and three hundred pounds of inventory can push past 8,000 lb, so we generally recommend stepping up to 12,000 lb capacity for any autolift garage serving a working van fleet rather than cutting it close on a 10,000. The Marion Building: Height, Power, and Slab
The building in Marion was a 40×60 steel structure with 14-foot sidewalls, which is comfortable for a clear-floor overhead two-post — you need about 12 feet to the underside of the overhead assembly, and he had it with room to spare after we routed around a light fixture. The slab was the bigger question. It had been poured in two phases with a cold joint running right through where we wanted the passenger-side column. We moved the layout eighteen inches to keep all anchors in monolithic concrete, which cost him nothing and saved a lot of worry.
Power is worth mentioning because it’s the thing that most often delays an install. Most two-posts in this class run a 220V single-phase motor and want a dedicated 30-amp circuit. If your electrician isn’t scheduled before install day, the lift goes up and then sits. We tell customers to get the disconnect and the drop in place first, on the side of the bay where the power unit will live. Also plan an air drop nearby — the arm restraints and some lock releases are pneumatic on certain models, and running a hose across the floor of a working autolift garage is a trip hazard nobody needs. Finally, leave three feet of walk-around clearance behind the columns. Shops always want to push the lift toward the wall to gain floor space, and they always regret it the first time a tech has to service the cable sheaves.
Maintenance, Parts, and the Ten-Year View
Arm style is a purchase decision you make once. Parts availability is a decision you live with for a decade. Two-post lifts are simple machines, but they’re not maintenance-free: equalizer cables stretch and eventually fray, lock dogs and their springs wear, arm restraint gears round off, hydraulic cylinders develop seeps, and the slider blocks in the carriages need periodic greasing. On a lift that cycles fifteen times a day in a fleet shop, that’s a real service schedule, not a suggestion.

How to Decide, and What to Send Us
Short version: if your fleet is mostly long, heavy, rear-biased vehicles, go symmetric. If it’s mostly cars and light trucks, go asymmetric. If it’s genuinely mixed — and most small fleets are — go versymmetric and train your people on where each vehicle sits.
