When a third-generation family shop in Iowa City called us about rebuilding two bays, the question wasn’t which brand looked nicest in a brochure. It was whether their autolift garage could pass an annual state inspection without an inspector writing up the anchors, the column spacing, or the missing certification label. That’s a fair worry. We install and service lifts across Iowa from our base in Ames, and we’ve watched plenty of shops discover — mid-inspection — that a lift bought years ago on price alone was never third-party certified and never anchored to the concrete spec the manufacturer published. This article is the technical deep-dive we gave that family: real dimensions, real anchor numbers, and what ALI Gold actually means on paper.

What ALI Gold Certification Actually Certifies
The gold label people talk about is the Automotive Lift Institute’s third-party certification program. It doesn’t mean a company paid for a sticker. It means an independent lab tested that specific model — that exact configuration of columns, carriage, arms, hydraulics, and safety locks — against ANSI/ALI ALCTV, and that the factory gets audited on an ongoing basis to confirm what ships matches what was tested. The label carries the model number, the rated capacity, and the certification body’s mark. An inspector can read it and verify it in seconds.
Why that matters in an autolift garage doing annual state inspections is simple: the certification is your paper trail. If a lift fails and someone gets hurt, the first questions are always whether the equipment was certified, whether it was installed to the manufacturer’s instructions, and whether it was inspected annually by a qualified inspector. Rotary and Challenger both hold certification across their common two-post and four-post lines, which is a big part of why we sell and service them. We’ve also been called to shops with uncertified imports where the lock ladder tolerances drifted enough that only three of four locks engaged. There is no retrofit that turns an uncertified lift into a certified one — the certification is model-specific and factory-audited, so the only fix is replacement.
Real Bay Dimensions: What We Measure Before Quoting
Every quote we write starts with five numbers. Ceiling height at the lowest obstruction — not the peak, the lowest truss, light, or door track. Slab thickness and age. Bay width between obstructions. Door opening height and width. And the distance from the proposed column line to the nearest slab joint or edge.
For the Iowa City shop, the older bay had 11 ft 8 in of usable height under a light bar, a 26 ft deep bay, and a 12 ft 4 in wide working area. That ruled out a standard clearfloor two-post with a 12 ft overhead beam and pushed us to a baseplate model, which runs the crossover hydraulics and cables through a floor plate instead of an overhead bridge. Baseplate designs typically need around 11 ft of ceiling for a full rise on a passenger car, and you gain the ability to lift tall vans without smacking a beam. The tradeoff is a plate you walk over and roll jacks across, which some techs hate. For a two-post asymmetric setup, plan on roughly 12 ft of bay width minimum for comfortable door swing, and 24 ft of depth if you want a workbench behind the lift. Those are the honest working numbers, not the catalog minimums.
Concrete: The Number That Kills More Installs Than Anything Else
Most 10,000 lb two-post lifts specify a minimum of 4 to 4.25 inches of cured concrete at 3,000 PSI, measured under the baseplate — not the slab average. Higher-capacity lifts and four-post runways can call for 6 inches or more, and reinforcement requirements vary by model. The manufacturer’s installation manual governs, and the ALI certification is only valid when the lift is anchored per that manual.
We core-drill or hammer-test when there’s any doubt. In the Iowa City building, the original 1960s section of the floor tested at 3.5 inches over dirt fill with visible cracking near the drain — nowhere near adequate. The fix was a pair of poured footing pads, roughly 4 ft by 4 ft by 12 inches deep with rebar mat, tied into the existing slab and given a full 28-day cure before we set columns. That added a couple weeks to the schedule and a real chunk of cost, but it’s the difference between an autolift garage that passes inspection and one that fails it. We also see shops with fiber-mesh slabs poured over radiant tubing. That’s solvable, but you need the tubing layout mapped before anyone drills. Guessing costs you a slab repair and a heating contractor.
Anchors, Torque, and the Details Inspectors Look For
Anchor bolts are where corner-cutting shows up fastest. The manuals specify a bolt diameter, minimum embedment depth, minimum edge distance from any slab crack or joint, and a torque value. Typical passenger-car two-post anchors run 3/4 in diameter with several inches of embedment and a torque spec in the 90 to 150 ft-lb range depending on the model. If the anchor won’t hold torque, the concrete is telling you something — you don’t just crank harder or swap in a longer bolt and call it good.
Inspectors also look at shimming. Columns must be plumb, and shims are limited to a stack height the manual defines, usually around half an inch, with full-bearing steel shims rather than a stack of washers. Beyond that, you level the concrete instead. Other things we check on every annual: lock engagement at each ladder position, cable equalization and tension, arm restraint function, hydraulic hose routing without chafe points, and legible capacity and warning labels. Missing labels are a shockingly common write-up, and they’re cheap to fix — we stock replacement decal kits for Rotary and Challenger. Column Spacing and Arm Geometry for Inspection Work
Annual state inspection work means constant in-and-out cycling: brakes, tires, exhaust, steering, lights. Time on and off the lift is your real productivity metric, and that’s driven by arm geometry more than capacity. Asymmetric two-post lifts rotate the columns and use unequal arm lengths so the vehicle sits farther back, which buys you door clearance on cars. Symmetric setups center the vehicle and handle trucks and long-wheelbase vans better but pin you against the columns when you open a door.
For a mixed inspection lane in Iowa — half sedans and crossovers, half three-quarter-ton pickups — we usually spec an asymmetric or versymmetric column with three-stage front arms and two-stage rears. The three-stage front arm collapses short enough to reach a low sports car pickup point and extends far enough for a long-nose truck. Drive-through clearance between columns matters too: look for at least 100 inches on a two-post if wide-body pickups come through. On four-post lifts for inspection work, runway width and the position of the rear slider plate determine whether you can get a wheels-free jack under a differential. Maintenance Intervals That Keep an Autolift Garage Certified
Certification and annual inspection only mean something if the lift is maintained between them. Our recommended baseline for a shop running eight to twelve vehicles a day: daily visual on cables, hoses, and locks; monthly lubrication of the carriage slide blocks and cable sheaves; quarterly check of hydraulic fluid level and cable equalization; annual third-party inspection with documentation kept on file.
Cables are the wear item that surprises people. On a clearfloor two-post, the equalizer cables run over sheaves at the top of each column, and they stretch. Left alone, one carriage rides higher than the other, the locks stop engaging evenly, and eventually a strand breaks. We replace cables in matched sets — never one side — and we stock cables for most Rotary, Challenger, and BendPak models. Hydraulic cylinders are the other big one; a weeping rod seal that gets ignored turns into a cylinder replacement. Fluid choice matters here too: most manufacturers call for ISO 32 or ATF depending on the model and ambient temperature, and an unheated Iowa shop in January is a real argument for the lighter viscosity. Keep a simple logbook in the bay. When the inspector asks what you’ve done in the last twelve months, a filled-out log does more for you than any verbal explanation.
How We Handle Iowa Installs, Start to Finish
Our process is deliberately unglamorous. You send photos and measurements, or we drive out. We confirm ceiling height at the lowest point, test the slab, map any in-floor utilities, and check the electrical service — most two-post lifts run a 208-230V single-phase circuit around 20-30 amps, and plenty of older Iowa shops need a new home run from the panel. Then we quote the lift, the freight, the install labor, and any concrete work as separate line items so you can see where the money goes.
On install day, a two-post typically goes in over one working day once the concrete is ready: set and plumb columns, anchor and torque, route hydraulics and cables, fill and bleed, cycle and adjust locks, then load-test with a vehicle and walk the owner through daily checks. Four-post and inground jobs take longer. We leave the manual, the certification documentation, and a laminated daily-check card in the bay.
