A dealership service manager in southern Minnesota called us because his transmission tech kept banging his knuckles, and that complaint turned into a full autolift garage layout redesign. The bay had a two-post lift on nine-foot centers, a transmission jack that could not clear the arms, and a ceiling low enough that a crew cab pickup hit the truss before the pan cleared the tech’s shoulders. He wanted to know whether he needed a taller lift, a wider lift, or a different bay. The answer was dimensions — specific, measured, published dimensions — and an understanding of what ALI Gold certification actually guarantees. What ALI Gold Certification Actually Certifies

Service managers hear “ALI certified” and assume it is a marketing badge. It is not. The Automotive Lift Institute runs a third-party certification program to ANSI/ALI ALCTV, and a certified model has been physically tested to its rated capacity, evaluated for structural adequacy, and audited for ongoing production consistency. The gold label on the lift is model-specific, not brand-wide. A manufacturer can have twelve certified models and three that are not, so the label has to match the model number on the data plate.

For a dealership, this matters in three concrete ways. Insurance carriers increasingly ask for it. OSHA references consensus standards during inspections, and an uncertified lift in a commercial bay is an easy finding. And manufacturer warranty programs on some vehicle lines require certified equipment for driveline and body work. The southern Minnesota manager had one older lift with no label at all and no legible serial plate, which meant we could not verify capacity, could not source correct parts, and could not certify the annual inspection. That lift came out. Anything going into a professional autolift garage today should be a currently certified model with a legible plate and a serial number we can look up. It costs nothing extra to specify and it removes an entire category of liability argument.

Bay Dimensions: The Numbers That Actually Bind

Let us get specific. A typical clear-floor asymmetric two-post in the 10,000 to 12,000 lb class needs roughly 12 feet of width between obstructions to allow door opening and tech movement, with post centers commonly around 9 to 11 feet depending on symmetric versus asymmetric design. Overall height on a standard-column model runs about 12 feet at the overhead crossbar; low-ceiling and baseplate variants exist for buildings under that. Maximum rise is generally 69 to 78 inches at the pad, and drive-through clearance on an asymmetric column set is often 98 to 105 inches.

Now overlay a transmission job. A tech working under a lifted crew cab wants the pan at roughly chest height, which means about 60 to 66 inches of rise minimum, and he needs a transmission jack with a mast that extends to that height while its base rolls freely under the arms. Arm pad height at full rise plus vehicle frame height plus pan depth is the stack that determines whether the truss is a problem. In the southern Minnesota bay, the measured clear height to the bottom of the truss was 11 feet 4 inches, which ruled out a standard overhead model and pointed straight at a baseplate design. Measure your clear height at the lowest obstruction in the lift footprint, not at the peak. Ductwork, lights, and sprinkler heads all count.

Symmetric Versus Asymmetric for Driveline Work

Symmetric two-post lifts place the vehicle centered between the columns with equal-length arms, giving equal weight distribution front and rear. Asymmetric designs rotate the columns and use unequal arms so the vehicle sits farther back, letting the doors open past the posts. For a general service bay doing brakes and tires, asymmetric wins on convenience nearly every time.

For dedicated transmission and driveline work, the calculus shifts. A tech pulling a transfer case or dropping a transmission on a four-wheel-drive truck spends his time in the middle third of the vehicle, and he wants unobstructed access along the frame rails and nothing in the way of a jack rolling in from the side. Symmetric geometry with the columns forward of the working zone often gives cleaner side access under the mid-body. On the other hand, if the same bay also has to take in sedans for warranty work, doors that hit the posts will annoy everyone daily. What we recommended for the southern Minnesota autolift garage was a versatile-arm lift that can be set up either way, run in asymmetric mode for general intake and repositioned for heavy driveline jobs. Adjustable-height arm pads and screw-pad extensions matter more than most buyers realize, because pickup pinch weld heights and unibody sedan lift points differ by three or four inches and a tech who has to hunt for blocks wastes ten minutes a car.

Capacity, Duty Cycle, and Real Dealership Volume

Rated capacity is not a target, it is a ceiling with distribution rules attached. A 12,000 lb two-post typically specifies a maximum per-arm load, and loading a heavy engine-forward vehicle can exceed the front-arm limit even when total weight is well under 12,000. Diesel three-quarter-ton and one-ton pickups are the usual culprits in a dealership setting. If the shop takes in Super Duty and 2500-series trucks, we push for 12,000 lb minimum and often 15,000 lb, and we check the front-axle-weight math against the published per-arm figure rather than eyeballing it.

Duty cycle is the other half. A dealership two-post can cycle twenty-five or thirty times a day. That is thousands of cycles a year, and it wears cables, sheaves, lock pawls, and cylinder seals on a schedule. Commercial-grade construction with larger-bore cylinders and heavier cable is not upselling in that environment; it is the difference between a five-year service interval and a two-year one. In a busy autolift garage we expect to inspect cables annually, replace them on condition rather than on a fixed calendar, and rebuild or swap a cylinder somewhere in the eight-to-twelve-year window. Concrete Specification for Two-Post Installations

Two-post lifts resist an overturning moment through anchors in the slab, which makes concrete the single most safety-critical part of the installation. Manufacturers publish minimums that commonly land around 4 to 6 inches of thickness at 3,000 PSI minimum compressive strength, fully cured, with specified minimum distance from any slab edge, expansion joint, or sawcut. That last one traps people. A post set six inches from a control joint is not anchored in a monolithic pad, and the anchor pull-out values in the manual no longer apply.

The southern Minnesota shop was in a 1970s building with an original slab and several patched sections where old drains had been removed. We cored three locations. Two came back at five and a half inches of solid concrete, and one — right where a post wanted to land — came back at three inches over an old fill pocket. The fix was a sawcut footing pad, roughly four by four feet by twelve inches deep with rebar, poured and cured for a week before anchoring. That is a few thousand dollars and a bay out of service, and it is completely non-negotiable. We have been called to shops where somebody skipped this and the anchors pulled a cone of concrete out under load. Nobody was hurt, but only because of where the tech happened to be standing. Core the slab. Every time.

Hydraulics, Cables, and Synchronization Details

The internals are where the technical differences between models actually live. Most modern two-post lifts use a single or dual cylinder arrangement with equalization cables that keep the two carriages level. Those cables are not lifting cables in every design — on many, they are synchronization cables, and their job is to prevent one side rising faster than the other. They still fail, and a failed equalizer means a vehicle tilting on the pads. Inspect them for broken wires at the sheave contact points, corrosion at the fittings, and any flat spot indicating a seized sheave.

Power units on commercial two-post lifts are typically 220V single phase or three phase with a 2 to 3 HP motor, a gear pump, and a lowering solenoid. The most common service call we get is not a mechanical failure at all — it is air in the system after a fluid change, or a lowering valve that leaks past and lets the carriage settle overnight. Both are cheap fixes if you catch them. Fluid should be the manufacturer-specified hydraulic oil at the correct viscosity, not automatic transmission fluid because it was on the shelf. Lock pawls need to be tested for engagement at every ladder position, on both columns, during the annual inspection. Laying Out the Bay: What We Recommended

The final plan for that southern Minnesota bay was a baseplate two-post rated at 12,000 lb, ALI certified, set on new footing pads at the two post locations, with versatile arms and screw-pad extensions. Baseplate design put all the hydraulic and equalizer routing in a low-profile channel on the floor rather than on an overhead beam, which recovered the ten inches of clear height the truss had stolen. The transmission jack he already owned cleared the arms once we set the post spacing at the wider end of the allowable range.

We also moved his air drop and rearranged the parts cart so the tech’s working side stayed clear, and specified a bay width of 14 feet center to center from the adjacent lift so two techs could work simultaneously without door interference. If you take one thing from this: an autolift garage layout is a dimensional problem with a safety standard on top, and both halves have answers you can look up. Measure clear height at the lowest obstruction, measure width between real obstructions, core the slab, verify the ALI certification is current for that specific model number, and check per-arm capacity against your heaviest regular intake.
