A tire and alignment shop owner in Urbandale called us last spring with a question we hear almost weekly: he had found a ten-year-old two-post on a farm auction listing and wanted to know whether putting that machine in his autolift garage bay was smart money or a liability waiting to happen. He was tired of pulling differentials and transfer cases on ramps, and a differential fluid service on a lifted truck is a two-minute job when the vehicle is at chest height instead of a twenty-minute contortion act on a creeper. We drove out, put a flashlight on the thing, and gave him a straight answer. This article is that same walkthrough, written down, so you can make the call with your eyes open instead of guessing.

Why Shops Look at Used Equipment First

Nobody shops used because they enjoy risk. They shop used because a new commercial two-post plus installation is a real capital outlay, and a shop that just signed a lease or bought a building has already spent its cushion. The Urbandale owner had three alignment racks, a decent tire changer, and a balancer he babied. What he did not have was a general service bay, and every differential fluid service or brake job he turned away went down the street. A used lift looked like the fastest way to close that gap for a third of the money.

That math can work. We have put plenty of secondhand columns back into service and watched them run for another decade. But the number on the auction listing is never the real number. Freight from a rural sale, a rigging crew to get it off the trailer, anchors, a concrete evaluation, replacement cables, new arm restraints, and a certified inspection all stack up. On more than one project the all-in cost of a used machine landed within fifteen percent of new — and new came with a warranty, current ANSI-compliant safety hardware, and parts availability we could guarantee for years. So the first honest step in evaluating any autolift garage purchase is to write down every downstream cost, not just the purchase price. If you cannot get a straight answer on the model number and manufacture year, you cannot price the rebuild, and you are not buying equipment, you are buying a puzzle.

The Ten-Minute Inspection We Run Before Anything Else

When we look at a used lift, we start where failures start. Cables come first. We run a gloved hand along every accessible inch looking for broken strands, flat spots where a sheave has worn a groove, kinks from bad storage, and rust that has gone past surface discoloration into pitting. One broken strand is a replace, not a maybe. Then sheaves: if the pulley grooves are egg-shaped or the bearings feel gritty by hand, they are consumables and they are cheap compared to what happens when one seizes.

Next we look at the carriage and arm assemblies. Slider blocks wear, and worn blocks let the carriage rock in the column, which chews the column wall. We check arm restraint gears for missing or rounded teeth, because a restraint that does not hold is the single most common cause of a vehicle walking off a two-post. We look at the lock ladders for deformation and at the safety latches for free, positive engagement in every position. On the power unit we check the reservoir for milky fluid, the motor for burnt smell, and the base plate for cracks. Finally, columns: any bow, any twist, any repair weld gets a hard no from us, full stop. Bent steel is not repairable in a shop environment and no discount makes it worth it. If a machine clears all of that, it is a candidate. If it fails on columns or shows an unknown history of overload, we tell people to walk.

Concrete: The Part Nobody Inspects

Here is the thing that sinks more used-lift projects than worn cables: the floor. A two-post lift transfers everything it holds into a handful of anchor bolts, and those bolts are only as good as the slab they bite into. Most commercial two-posts want a minimum of four inches of 3,000 PSI concrete, and the taller and higher-capacity the machine, the more slab you need. Plenty of older Urbandale strip-mall bays and converted buildings have thin slabs, control joints in exactly the wrong place, or patched sections poured over dirt that was never compacted.

We core-test or at minimum drill test holes before anchoring anything. If the slab comes up short, the fix is a cut-out and a new footing pad — usually a few feet square and eight to twelve inches deep per column, tied in with rebar and given a full cure before load. That is a real expense, and it is the same expense whether the lift on top of it is new or forty years old. Which is exactly why we tell people to settle the floor question before they settle the equipment question. We have watched a buyer spend all their budget on a bargain used machine and then discover they had nothing left for the concrete work that would make it legal to use. Doing it in the other order — floor first, then equipment sized to what the floor and ceiling allow — keeps an autolift garage project from stalling half-finished.

Parts Availability Is the Real Deciding Factor

A used lift is only a good deal if you can keep it running. That means the brand and model matter more than the condition on the day you look at it. Rotary and Challenger have deep parts catalogs and long support tails; we can source cables, slider blocks, restraint gears, lock assemblies, cylinders, and power units for machines that are decades old. That is not marketing talk, it is why we recommend them. On the home and light-duty side, BendPak and Atlas are similarly supportable.

Where people get burned is orphan equipment — an import brand that was sold under three different names, imported by a company that folded, with no serial-number-to-parts mapping and no dimensional standards. When a cylinder seal kit for one of those is unavailable, your options are a custom rebuild or scrap. We have had customers with lifts that were mechanically fine except for one $200 part that simply does not exist anymore. That is a total loss on a machine that looked like a steal. Before you buy, send us the data plate photo through our parts lookup and we will tell you within a day whether that model is supportable. What a Proper Rebuild Actually Includes

If a used machine passes inspection and the parts are available, we rebuild it before it holds a vehicle. That is not optional in our shop. A proper refresh means new cables front and back, new sheaves and sheave pins, fresh hydraulic hose, new cylinder seals or a reman cylinder, replacement slider blocks, new arm restraint gears and pins, verified lock engagement at every notch, a new power unit if the old one shows any sign of amp draw problems, and fresh ANSI safety decals and load labels so the machine is legally marked.

Then it gets anchored to torque spec, shimmed plumb, cycled unloaded, cycled with a light vehicle, and load-tested. We document it. That documentation matters if your insurance carrier or a state inspector ever asks, and it matters more if a technician gets hurt. Budget-wise, a full rebuild on a serviceable two-post commonly lands in the low-to-mid four figures depending on what needs replacing — meaningful money, but predictable money. Compare that total to a new lift installed and you have an actual decision instead of a gut feeling. For the Urbandale shop we walked through, the auction machine had a hairline bow in one column, and we told him to skip it. He bought a new Rotary two-post instead, we set it on a fresh footing pad, and he has been doing differential fluid service and brake work in that bay ever since without a second thought about what is over his head.

Matching the Lift to the Work in Your Autolift Garage

Capacity and configuration should be driven by the vehicles you actually see, not the vehicles you might see someday. A tire and alignment shop in the Des Moines metro is servicing a lot of half-ton pickups, three-row SUVs, and the occasional dually. A 10,000 lb two-post covers the vast majority of that. Step up to 12,000 or 15,000 if you take in one-ton trucks, service vans, or shuttle buses with regularity. Underrating capacity to save money is the single worst decision available in this category.

Configuration matters just as much. Asymmetric two-posts let you open car doors in a tight bay. Symmetric handles longer wheelbases and heavier trucks better. Clearfloor models give you an unobstructed floor for transmission jacks and rolling drain pans, which is exactly what you want for differential fluid service, but they need the ceiling height to carry the overhead beam — usually twelve feet or more once you account for the truck on the arms. Floorplate models work under lower ceilings but put a plate across the bay. A 30×40 pole building with twelve-foot sidewalls, which is a setup we quote constantly in Iowa, will generally take a clearfloor two-post if the truss height cooperates. Our process is boring on purpose. We start with a site visit or a set of photos and measurements: ceiling clear height, obstructions, door swing, slab thickness if known, existing electrical service, and bay width. We size the equipment to that, quote installed with the concrete and electrical work spelled out as separate line items so nothing hides, and give you an honest read on used versus new for your specific situation.
