A restoration shop owner in the Quad Cities emailed us with a question we get in some form almost weekly: he had a number in his head, a building with a decent slab, and a stack of 1960s cars waiting on wheel bearing and brake work — should he buy a used lift or a new one? He was not being cheap. He was being careful, because in a restoration business the money that goes into equipment is money that is not going into parts inventory. Setting up an autolift garage the right way is a sequence of decisions, and used-versus-new is not actually the first one. Start With the Work, Not the Price Tag
The first branch of the decision tree is what you actually do all day. Restoration work is not general repair. You spend hours under one car instead of forty minutes under twelve. You pull wheels, hubs, spindles, and drums constantly. You need the suspension hanging free so you can press a bearing race without the geometry fighting you, and you need to leave a car up for three days while a bearing kit ships from somewhere in Ohio.
That profile points hard toward wheels-free access, which means a two-post lift as the primary. Wheel bearing service on a 1965 sedan is miserable on a four-post without rolling jacks and pleasant on a two-post. It also means you care more about arm reach and unobstructed floor than about lift speed or cycle count. A production shop wants to raise and lower a hundred times a week; a restoration autolift garage might cycle a lift eight times a week but leave it loaded for days. Those are different demands on the same machine, and they change what matters in a used unit. Low cycle count is worth more to you than to a tire shop. Hydraulic seals that have sat dry for two years are worth less.
Branch Two: What Your Building Will Allow
Before you shop anything, measure. Ceiling height sets the outer boundary on your options and it is not negotiable. A standard-height two-post needs roughly twelve feet of clear ceiling to be useful, and clear means under the lowest obstruction — not the peak, not the truss bottom if there is conduit hanging below it. Shops in older Quad Cities buildings frequently have ten-and-a-half or eleven feet, which pushes you toward a low-ceiling or baseplate configuration, or toward a mid-rise scissor as a companion unit.
Then the slab. Most two-post lifts want at least four inches of 3,000 PSI concrete, and plenty want more. If your building is 1940s industrial, the slab may be thicker than modern code or it may be two and a half inches over cinders with no way to know until somebody cores it. We have had customers pour engineered pads inside an existing building rather than replace the whole floor, and that is often the cheaper path. Power is the last constraint — most single-phase units run 220V, and if your autolift garage only has 110V to the back wall, add an electrician to your budget before you add a lift. Branch Three: The Honest Case for Buying Used
Used lifts can be a genuinely good buy, and we say that as people who sell new ones. The best used purchases we have seen came from three sources: a dealership consolidating buildings, a shop that closed with its equipment still under cover, and an estate sale where a hobbyist bought a good lift and used it twenty times. In each case the equipment was a known brand, had documentation, and had lived indoors on a real floor.
What you are buying used is structure. Columns, carriages, and arms are heavy steel and they do not wear out on a low-cycle machine. What you are gambling on is everything else — hydraulics, cables, locks, and whether replacement parts still exist. That last one is the deal-killer more often than any mechanical problem. An unbranded import lift from 2004 with no serial tag and a manufacturer that no longer exists is not a bargain at any price, because the day a cylinder seal fails you own a very heavy sculpture. A used Rotary or Challenger with a legible data plate is a different animal entirely; we can look up that model and get you cables, seals, lock components, and sheaves. For a restoration autolift garage on a tight budget, a well-documented used lift plus a thousand dollars of fresh wear parts often beats a new budget-tier lift.
Branch Four: When New Is Clearly the Right Call
Flip it around. New makes sense when the used market near you is thin, when your ceiling or slab forces you into a specific configuration that rarely comes up secondhand, or when you need warranty and liability coverage because you have employees rather than just yourself under the car. That last point deserves weight. If a tech is working under a lift you bought off a marketplace listing with no history, you have taken on a risk that is hard to quantify and impossible to insure well.
New also wins on ALI certification. A current-production certified lift from a major brand comes with documented load testing, current lock design, proper decals, and an installation manual that matches the machine in front of you. For a shop that might be inspected, insured, or eventually sold as a going concern, that paperwork has real value. And the price gap is smaller than people expect once you add up what a used unit needs — cables, a seal kit, a hose set, freight, rigging, and an installer’s time to make it right. We have quoted plenty of jobs where the honest all-in cost of getting a used lift into service in a customer’s autolift garage landed within fifteen percent of a new mid-tier two-post, and at that point the decision makes itself.
Configuration Details That Matter for Wheel Bearing Work
Once you have picked used or new, the configuration questions get specific. Asymmetric versus symmetric arms is the big one. Asymmetric rotates the vehicle back in the bay so the doors clear the columns — excellent if you are getting in and out of a car repeatedly, which restoration work absolutely involves. Symmetric centers the vehicle and generally handles long-wheelbase and heavier vehicles better. For a shop working on 1950s and 60s American cars with big doors and long bodies, we usually end up recommending an asymmetric or a versymmetric design that can do both.
Arm reach matters more than capacity for most restoration shops. A 10,000 lb lift is plenty for nearly anything with fenders on it; what you need is three-stage front arms that reach in under a unibody pinch weld and rear arms that stretch to a long-wheelbase frame rail. Also think about adapters. Frame-on classic cars need frame cradle pads, and stacked rubber blocks on original body mounts are how people put dents in restored sheet metal. Buy the right adapter set with the lift. Finally, if your autolift garage has room, a mid-rise scissor as a second unit is worth considering for quick wheel-off work and media blasting access. What to Inspect Before You Hand Over Money
If you go used, inspect it under load if at all possible. Ask the seller to raise a vehicle and hold it. Watch the carriages arrive at the top — a half inch of difference means cables have stretched or a sheave is binding. Listen to the locks; they should click cleanly on the way up and set positively. Look for hydraulic weeping at the cylinder rod and every fitting. Any dampness is a seal or hose you will be replacing, so price it in.
Then get on your knees with a flashlight and a rag and run it along the equalizer cables. Broken strands, kinks, flat spots, or rust bleeding from between strands all mean a matched cable set is part of your purchase price. Check the anchor bolts and the concrete around each column base for spalling or cracks radiating outward — that tells you the slab was marginal in its last home and may be marginal in yours. Putting the Tree Together Into a Buying Plan
Here is how the decision usually resolves for a restoration shop. If your ceiling is at least twelve feet, your slab is verified, and your budget allows, buy a new ALI-certified asymmetric two-post from a major brand and stop thinking about it — you will own it for twenty years and it will never be the reason a job stalls. If budget is the binding constraint, hunt for a documented used Rotary or Challenger, plan on a fresh cable set and a seal kit, and have it installed professionally rather than by three friends and a skid loader. If your building fights you on height, look at low-ceiling two-post designs or a mid-rise scissor before you compromise on brand.

A restoration business runs on hours, and a lift that is out of service or that you do not fully trust costs more in stalled projects than the purchase savings ever returned.
