The setup: a Cedar Falls mobile mechanic’s fixed bay

The mechanic in question had been fully mobile for six years and wanted a fixed bay for larger jobs and inspection work. He bought a modest steel building on the north edge of Cedar Falls, poured a proper six-inch slab with rebar, and called us for a two-post spec. Vehicle mix was broad but tilted toward mid-size sedans and small SUVs, with the occasional half-ton pickup. Ceiling was 12 feet, which gave us headroom for a standard column with room to spare. We spec’d a Rotary SPO10 symmetric with the standard three-stage arm set.

Install went smoothly. Anchor set into the six-inch slab was textbook, hydraulic bleed and initial cycle test took about an hour, and the lift was production-ready by mid-afternoon. What we spent extra time on, and what is worth documenting, is the arm-restraint and safety-cam engagement check at commissioning. This is where a lot of autolift garage installs get shortchanged and where a proper walkthrough matters most for a single-tech operation that has no second set of eyes on the daily safety-check.

What arm restraints actually do

Arm restraints on a two-post lift are the mechanical devices that prevent the arms from swinging out from under the vehicle once the lift starts rising. They engage automatically as the lift raises, using a gear-driven pawl that locks arm rotation until the lift is lowered back to a specific height. Every ALI-certified two-post has some form of arm restraint; the differences are in the engagement geometry, the audible feedback, and how easy it is for a tech to visually verify engagement before starting to raise the vehicle.

The Rotary SPO10 uses a gear-tooth restraint that engages at a specific rise height with a clear audible click on each arm. The engagement is passive and does not require the tech to do anything active beyond loading the vehicle correctly. In an autolift garage where a single mobile mechanic is doing all the lift cycles, passive engagement is what you want. Any restraint system that requires the tech to remember an active step every cycle is a system that will fail on the day the tech is distracted. Passive is safer for solo operations.

Commissioning the restraint check

On install day we walked the Cedar Falls mechanic through the full arm-restraint commissioning check. That involves loading the arms lightly with an empty vehicle, raising the lift through the engagement height, verifying an audible click on each of the four arms, and confirming the arms cannot be rotated by hand once engaged. We repeated the check at three different heights and with the vehicle removed to verify the restraint mechanism engaged and disengaged cleanly through the full cycle range. That is the ALI-recommended commissioning protocol.

We also spent time on the visual inspection points he would use for his daily pre-cycle check: gear tooth wear, restraint housing integrity, and lubrication of the engagement mechanism. Safety cam engagement: the second line of defense

Beyond the arm restraints, every ALI-certified two-post has a mechanical safety-cam system that engages at every couple of inches of lift height and holds the vehicle mechanically if the hydraulic system fails. The safety cams on the Rotary SPO10 are dual-position, meaning both columns lock simultaneously, and they are audibly engaged, meaning you hear the click as they seat. On commissioning we verified all four positions across both columns and confirmed the cams held the vehicle mechanically when we intentionally released hydraulic pressure at each position.

The dual-position audible engagement is a significant safety feature for a single-tech autolift garage because it removes the guesswork about whether the vehicle is on hydraulics or on the mechanical safeties. You raise the lift, hear the click, and you know the mechanical lock is set. For inspection work where the tech is spending time under the vehicle, that certainty matters. Any two-post lift being sold as inspection-capable should have this kind of audible safety-cam engagement; if it does not, keep shopping.

Annual state inspection workflow on the SPO10

The Cedar Falls mechanic handles annual state inspection work for out-of-state registered vehicles that need documented safety checks. The SPO10 supports that workflow cleanly. A typical inspection involves lifting the vehicle to full height, engaging the safety cams, and spending twenty to forty minutes under the vehicle inspecting brakes, exhaust, suspension, drivetrain, and body integrity. The arm restraints stay engaged the entire time, the safety cams hold the vehicle mechanically, and the tech has hands-free confidence that the lift will not lower unexpectedly.

Cycle counts on this autolift garage are moderate compared to a multi-tech shop: roughly ten to fifteen cycles per week, mostly inspection-driven with a handful of larger repair jobs. That cycle profile is easy on the lift and predictable for wear planning. At the twelve-month follow-up we found the arm restraints, safety cams, and hydraulic system all performing within factory spec with no meaningful wear beyond expected pad rubber compression. This is the kind of ownership profile that a properly commissioned and properly maintained lift delivers.

The twelve-month follow-up: what we checked

At twelve months we came back for the courtesy first-year inspection that ships with every install we do. Full checklist: arm restraint gear tooth inspection at all four positions, safety cam engagement audible check at all four heights on both columns, hydraulic fluid level and appearance, cable tension and visual inspection at column tops, pad rubber condition, and column anchor torque verification. The whole visit took about ninety minutes. Everything passed cleanly with the exception of one column anchor that had backed off by about an eighth of a turn, well within tolerance but worth re-torquing as preventive maintenance.

We also updated the ALI inspection sticker date on both columns and left the mechanic with a printed record of the check for his own files. That record is what an insurance carrier or a customer’s fleet manager would want to see if they ever asked about the shop’s inspection-capability documentation. What we would tell any single-tech shop planning the same buildout

Three things. First, spec a lift with passive arm restraint engagement and audible safety-cam engagement. As a solo operator you cannot afford to depend on active safety steps that are easy to skip in a distracted moment. Second, learn the daily pre-cycle visual inspection at commissioning and run it every morning. It takes five seconds and it catches every developing issue we have ever seen. Third, buy through a distributor that includes commissioning walkthrough and first-year inspection, because the setup education is worth as much as the lift hardware itself.
